André Onana (Out)

Why is it so difficult to ship out players nowadays? I swear Fergie shipped taibi out after 3-6 mths.

A) We have players on obscene wages these days. I imagine the wages we offered to our non top players was far closer to what other clubs could afford back in the day than what we offer now.

B) We've been crap for over a decade. When we were good, even our crap players could generate some interest, because the team was doing well so other teams would think that any player from our setup would bring something to their team. Our players on the other hand look like crap week in week out and have done so for years now, so other teams would be much less likely to think that anyone from our team has anything to add to theirs.

Mostly a combination of wages and their performances in a United jersey.

There’s a reason the likes of Pool and City etc can sell fringe players for obscene amounts (like Quansah for £35m) - they are part of title winning squads and they aren’t on crazy wages, while we struggle to shift the likes of Rashford, Sancho, Antony (& Garnacho) for what is deemed as fairly “reasonable” fees. It’s frustrating but it’s something we’re going to have to accept as part of the culture clean up and turnaround.

And we’ll continue to sell our players for as long as we underperform as a team as well - especially those on higher end wages.

The Times have said that Monaco have approached Onana but hes minded to stay at Utd. A other bits and pieces in the tweet

Would post the tweet, but a broadsheet as well known and established as The Times isnt considered "tier 1" by the mods so...

We know you disagree with the policy, you don't have to keep mentioning it.

Give over

He might think differently if we signed someone to replace him. Let's hope so.

Having him between the sticks next season will instantly deflate my anticipation for next season. He's that poor.

Surely he just needs to be told that he'll be #2 this season. Then he'll maybe be "minded" to seek other opportunities.

Did anyone see Howson's recent take on the prospect of him not leaving?
I didn’t see it. What did he say?

Ordinarily a player fighting for his place is commendable but his issues aren’t due to poor form, I just don’t think he’s very good at shot stopping.

Basically that replacing him wasn't at the top of the priority list (but rather in the middle) versus others such as the upfront and the midfield. If I remember correctly he was of the view that it was possible to work with Onana as number one choice for another season and trying to find some positives about him as a player to justify this.

I can understand that in some ways. Having a cheap and dependable 2nd choice keeper to come in and replace him if he starts messing up again would be a decent compromise.

This is what I've been thinking. I'd rather spend big on the attack and cheapskate goalkeeper.

Just replace Bayindir with somebody competent. If we get a good offer for Onana (£20m) then I'd take it and replace him but otherwise there are more important areas to invest in.

Just wish the hierarchy would sit him down and tell him he’s 100% not in our plans, so it would be in his interest to move on. No doubt a nice bloke, but a liability keeper.

Unfortunately we never do that with unwanted players

Please no, no stay, god no. Please no.

He is not bad, but terribly bad.

I would hope that whomever was involved with getting Onana pushed up to the executive branch at Utd to sign off on for his purchase, has long since departed the club.

It's either people or processes or both. Too many rotten signings over past decade.

Oh Wow, that quickly ended any hopes for next season. You can not account for keepers who are just not trustworthy enough. It does not inspire confidence in the defense and they will always be shaky and doo too much. For example if i am playing any match and know the keeper behind my team is shit, i will try to minimize the team to take shots, in order to do that i will flung myself at shots or intensity of pressing will be high, which allows good attackers to do feints and dribble me easier.

I will tell you the funny part, it does not include a few of his errors, such as against Galatasaray in the champions league where he made a horrific pass and Casemiro had to be sent off and conceded a penalty. Plus against Spurs away where Davies scored the most weakest of shots and he did not move, or the Europa league final goal, which any top keeper would have saved it. I am sure i have missed a few.

You can never win anything with keepers like these, unless you score way too many goals which is very tough in PL these days where most matches are a toss up realistically. Having a calamity as a keeper is disastrous. Please sign somebody. Do not make us suffer another season.

I generally agree with 99% of his takes but he seems to have some inability to call Onana out. I'm not sure why, maybe because he was so on board with him when he signed?

He keeps saying he was factually the best keeper in the league in his first season, as if save percentage is the only thing that matters. He also seems to downplay the sheer amount of howlers he's made as well.

Ive been one to say that we have bigger priorities than Onana this summer but god, watching that is absolutely brutal. So many similar goals to concede too, just horrendous technical ability.

Get him gone.

I doubt onanas wages are a big blocker. From a Google it looks like Everton, west ham and Southampton all pay their goalies similar. If someone believes he is a good goalie then they should be able to find a deal.

In PL terms, sure. We're unlikely to get a buyer in the PL because they all know he's crap. PL wages are far more inflated than other leagues. It's unlikely most other teams around Europe can pay him what we do

The definition of 'good' and Onana dont go in the same sentence. I'd say he's an average GK that a few 'good' games in him...which is not what a team aspiring to win things, wants in GK!

Most clubs in Europe do not pay their goalies that kind of money…

He has to move on, the players in front have no confidence and he's a complete liability.

Starting with him as number 1 next season instantly signals more of the same
