Andrea Medina

According to the Google Machine she is only 22 but has eight years of experience in top-flight football in Spain: four years at Real Betis -- starting at age 14 -- and then four years at Atletico Madrid. She was named to the Spain national team for the first time this year. Talk about a combination of youth + experience! I love her already....

Tbh I don’t know much about her apart from her being young and coming from Atletico Madrid.

Played against us in the champions league

Granted she was one of many young players in their team

At the very least we got to see her against us 3 times for 90 mins x2 and 60 mins. Madrid lost all 3 games conceding a total of 6 goals and struggled against us, but our staff must have been somewhat impressed by a 22 year old in some aspects to sign her

Hopefully they have seen more of her! :) I would be lying if I said I noticed her back then.

Also she was ranked 6th of Fullbacks on fotmob in Liga F last season

Top 4 were all Barcelona and in general they dominate these stats in all positions

So 2nd best non Barcelona fullback which is good

However, a 17 year old was the top non Barcelona fullback. So it kinda reminds me a bit of Wangerheim who we signed and Felicia Shroder who went to Madrid recently for big money. A good talent rather than the best of their country's talent.

Also they had her as Atletico's 3rd best after Luany and Fiamma Benitez, a winger and an attacking midfielder. So best of their defensive players

Still this was a free transfer, Liga F is one of the better leagues and she was one of the better fullbacks... I think at worst shes going to be a good backup for Sandberg and we really missed her in the 2nd half of last season when Rolfo was also out. And at best she'll be someone who might actually compete for a starting spot with Sandberg. From looking at her stats she looks decent on the ball, but also likes to win the ball with a lot of loose ball recoveries and interceptions, high ground duel % etc. So I'd assume she'll be fine defensively if we pick her and maybe we'll miss Sandberg more going forward... Medina got 3 goals, 2 in the league and 1 in the champions league which is good but 0 assists. So yeah I think we'd miss Sandberg's crossing. Other than that I'm hopeful she'll be a good backup

Im also seeing that Atletico played a back 3 a lot at the end of last season, she played left CB and had a bunch of good games. So a possibility that we might use that at some point. Or possibly we think she can play in a CB duo as well. Its not our system but maybe its one we work towards

Looking through her 3 goals last season this is the pick of them

A very good touch in the box to set herself and then a decent finish to score at the end of the game

Agreed -- she looks like one of those "young and hungry" players Skinner is always talking about building the squad around. An important difference, though, is that Medina has much more top-flight experience than Wangerheim, so I expect her to be able to adjust to the speed of WSL competition much more quickly than has Wangerheim. (I still have high hopes for Wangerheim, though!)
