Maybe with a full season of playing every week he develops into a really, really good player. Had he stayed here with our current options he would’ve been 4th choice CM going into the season behind Caicedo, Enzo, and a fit Lavia (for however long that lasts) and I think he saw that writing on the wall.

It's like the polar opposite of us. They just sign everyone without a clue how to fit them in. They routinely sell their best players by accident and let amazing youth products get snapped up. So much recruitment there. With us we may leave a position understocked for a few seasons and finally get around to sorting it out eventually.

Yeah this is exactly right. Very good in the first 45 mins, 2nd best player after Amad. But 45 to 60 mins we barely had the ball and our midfield certainly didnt have or do anything of note with it in that time. Granted Santos was playing next to Tyler Fletcher, but it had been a combination that allowed both to do well for most of the first half. Still he can be happy with the first half, just an average second to temper our expectations
 
Really does look the real deal, can understand Chelsea going with their other options given their respective price tags but equally, looks like he’s got it all. Exciting to see what’s coming with him!

Yeah it’s strange. They’ve bought so many players and let quite a few good ones go whilst buying others who simply aren’t as good.

Just chaos.
 
If you sign 2 CMs for £100 million each you're probably going to play them, even if you have a young player who looks pretty good. Theres obviously less competition with us. Santos made his choice knowing the options. If Barco does decently when given the chance he might be in the exact same situation a year or two from now. But thats a good result for Chelsea who would make plenty of money again for selling their backup

You sound almost bitter. He’s an excellent player. In his position I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up better than all but Caicedo.

Bitter? About what?

We play 1 game a week and have multiple players who are better than him. What’s bitter about what I said? He’s a really good young player but that’s all he is right now. He just would’ve had very limited minutes had he stayed.

If we were in Europe I’d have gladly kept him.
 
It is just nice to go into the season with a conundrum of who starts. Also, how good is it to see a proper DM, young, with bags of energy? No more waiting for Ugarte to come on, this is a dream.

Right now Santos feels like a shrewd and no nonsense signing. Im still a bit shocked they let him go over Lavia, who is never really fit. I get that he is behind Caicedo and Enzo but from the little I have seen, he is a top talent and could reach that level. Good at tracking back, plays the simple pass and does the dirty work. I think a box to box partner would be perfect for him as he would provide the cover.
 
Not been watching pre-season, but I take it this guy is the 6? Interested to see him this season.

Very good. He's been our best player so far this preseason. Seems to constantly be in the right place to win the ball back, and when he gets on the ball he's always looking to make sharp forward passes to our attackers. Our other players already seem to be comfortable giving him the ball and trusting that he'll keep it under pressure and distribute it properly.

The second half against PSG (the 20 minutes he played of it anyway) he looked a little off the pace, but the first half and the previous three games he's been very impressive. If he keeps it up we'll be considering him an absolute bargain.

They'd have been waiting a long time for any club to stump up £50 million for Lavia, and they clearly needed this money to help balance all the dodgy dealings they get up to.

But for all I dislike Chelsea, they've been very good for us two summers running now.

It's just hard to know what to be most thankful for, ridding us of Garnacho, selling us the very talented midfielder we were desperate for, or saving us from having Delap leading our attack last season.

Perosnally I'd go for Delap, as we very likely wouldn't have got CL if he'd come in over Sesko.
 
The mark of a top CM, is quiet composure and anticipation.
Santos just pops up where it’s needed.
Looking great at this point in time.
Hopefully he can stay fit and available for most of the season.
 
It's quite possible we are overrating Santos as we've been starved of proper CM play/passing, proper no.6 play. But so far he has been very good.

Between him and Tielemans additions our midfield play will obviously be so much better. That should raise our floor again.

Now if only we can make a few more additions, we can improve even more and cement our top 4 position in what's going to be a busy and hectic season.

Saying Romeo Lavia is a better player does come across bitter when its just not the case. In no world is a Lavia better.

If and in this context is a big if, Lavia can stay fit he is a far more accomplished player .
 
I don't think he will quite reach Casemiro numbers from last season, but Santos' instincts are really good in the box as well, especially on corners. Has a knack of being in the right place when the ball drops down and is also a strong header of the ball. Him and Tielemans should make up for the goals Casemiro contributed with last season.

He has barely even played a full 90 minutes for Chelsea, 'far more accomplished', what exactly has he done? He has been injured so much that it is almost impossible for him to improve, most likely he has regressed slightly.

My hope would be that Sesko and the centre backs would make up a lot of that considering all but 1 were from corners I think.

Casemiro is obviously very good at attacking set pieces but I think a lot of that is delivery and how you set up your corners too.
 
I think other clubs splashing 100M on players affected the reaction to Santos signing a bit. In comparison it felt like 50M was some back-up squad player.

But if you compare this transfer fee with Cunha/Mbeumo 60M-70M and the initial valuation of 60M for Baleba…you can see the club always saw Santos as a first team starter.

Which has has proved quickly in pre-season. The next challenge is doing it a red shirt in the PL.
 
I haven’t watched any pre season games but I like what I’m reading so far for the folk that have been following the friendlies what’s his best attributes
 
Players like Bruno and tielemans will enjoy playing with him. He’ll let them thrive in being creative.

His progressive passing seems to be really good. He’s also not shy of a tackle. Gets back and makes some good tackles
 
So why did chelsea let him go again...? For 50 million as well. Crazy considering they amount they have splashed on players i dont think they had to sell..

He wanted to play more regularly, Chelsea couldn't guarantee that to him as they don't have European football this season.

too busy giving minutes to the likes of enzo. andrey looks like a nice, charitable boy, and as such unbefitting of a club like chelsea.

Chelsea had accumulated something like 46 senior squad players.
I think they're down to just over 40 now.
Their other CM players were hardly going to get a sniff, with Enzo and Caicedo dominating team selection
They had to start offloading some of them, through sales and loans, in order to bring in new players and to balance the books.

Not surprised when facing that PSG duo, has looked really promising and can't wait to see him in PL
 


These forward passes were what went missing when we took Bruno out of CM and put him back to AM. Cas had the goals but not the same ability to quickly hit the front players with ease

I also remember when we played Chelsea remarking that they were much better at firing the ball into the #10 and then attacking from there. I didnt name check Santos because iirc Enzo and Caicedo were also doing it rather than it being one specific player. But he was among them and he seems to be bringing it with him
