Interview with NOTV in 2009

“Since I was 13 or 14 years old, I’ve been telling my mother and my father that my dream is to play some day forManchester United.

“And I won’t stop till I get it.

“When I watch [Wayne] Rooney and all of them on TV, I can’t wait to play there at Old Trafford.

“When I was a little boy I watched Arsenal games as well, but Manchester United always dazzled me most.”
Agent Little Boy strikes again! First RvP and now Di Maria.

I'd be delighted if we sign him, pacey as hell and always makes strong, direct and purposeful runs. LvG will love him.

I'm a bit unsure with di Maria, last season aside I likened him to Nani as an incredibly frustrating and inconsistent winger.

Our priority needs to be CB but we really need to be getting 2 summers worth of deals done in one window after last year. We should have picked up a LB and CM in that window but didn't (I won't count Fellaini) and the side needs at least one CB and a winger as well. Thankfully a LB and CM have both been secured so we can look at the other areas, I wouldn't be surprised if LVG is happy to stick with Carrick/Cleverly/Fellaini/Fletcher as a partner for Herrera and then look to sign Strootman when he's back from injury so I'm semi ruling out another CM this window although it would obviously be a welcome addition.

As for Di Maria I just think we need to realise the opportunity isn't likely to come about again and it'd be nice to see us benefit from Madrid getting rid of a quality player in favour of a new shiny toy so Perez can win another election.

92 goals/assists in 125 starts at Madrid is pretty consistent tbf.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
I've stayed out of this because I can't get my head round it. It's true that he's said at various moments that he doesn't feel valued by Madrid, that he doesn't like the way his name gets used (by the Madrid press) as available to other clubs for a fee/in a swap.

However, Ancelotti likes him, particularly the Di Maria who showed up post-Christmas for Madrid who was great playing behind Ronaldo in the 433, and who allowed them to use some sort of 4 3.5 2.5 formation in hard games. He'd certainly like a new contract, but he's already had one early payrise since his arrival, and for all their reputation for paying high wages, Madrid/Perez don't like mid-contract re-negotiations. I'd even say it seems to be a principle. So it might all be true and there might even be a reason for it.

To us? Hmmm, well it's his Madrid form that I take seriously and of course we'd benefit from his arrival. Whatever's happening at the WC I'd blame on his dysfunctional team and poor management not on his ability. If it's true that Mendes has decided to move some chess pieces around then Di Maria's a very interesting pawn, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Mendes would like to get us back into his client circle.

Given how lacking we are in the wide areas and how readily available he is it seems like a no brainer to me. Sanchez seems to be in a tug of war between Arsenal/Liverpool and maybe even staying in Barca, Reus is injured and not leaving until next summer and Rodriguez is getting eyed up by Perez at Madrid. Give Madrid 40m get him signed and it's a big gap in our first 11 sorted.

If the Madrid president wants him out of the club and especially to fund his new playtoy, I very much doubt Ancelotti could do anything about it no matter how much he values Di Maria. I can't see them bringing in James and Falcao without selling anybody

Deal for Kroos is supposed to be done as well.

Some people will never understand that the wing is in general an 'inconsistent' position. They'll win you some games with their brilliance, others you'll have to grind it out. As far as wingers go Di Maria is one of the best in the business. My god we'd love him here, he has both technique and work rate by the bucketload.

People saying we don't need a winger are very wrong. Apart from Adnan, our wide players were terrible last year. If RM are offering him on a plate to us, then sign him.

We need a wide player, we are being linked with Cuadrado as well, and apparently have even made a bid for him, which was rejected. This shows that LVG is also aware of the issue.

If Mendes is trying to get him to us, then go for it.

WOW I remember hearing a commentator say that he had 24 assists and I thought he misspoke but this guy had 11 goals and 26 assists last season. If you want a "United" winger, Di Maria is the man.

Express (not sure if reliable in the Uk is reporting it now).

That's from midfield though, not the wing. Although he regularly got a lot of assists when playing on the right in his previous seasons.

Sanchez delivers a lot more consistently, why is he any different? Beckham consistently contributed too? Wingers don't have to be inconsistent, don't know why this is a rule?

I guess we still owe you for snatching Ronaldo. I'd hate to see our little fideo go though. It would be absolutely ridiculous after the season he's had. Hope it's a nothing story.

This would be a splendid buy. I was adamant that United must sign him when I watched him closely during his wonderful 2009/2010 season with Benfica. Sadly, Real Madrid obtained him, and it is very difficult to envision him wanting to leave the European Champions unless they do as many posters here bizarrely want us to do with Rooney, and force one of their best players out.

 Di Maria coming here? No chance, more chance of signing Sanchez. Madrid will milk as much money as they can, we just won't pay their prices

Yep he is. Changed to Mendes earlier this year.

Apparently so. I wonder if Carvalho will end up at Monaco if the shuffle does take place.
Doubt it, the only way it would've happened was if he followed Jardim there but I highly doubt Jardim has much say in transfers so it's unlikely he'll go there. They're pretty well stocked in midfield anyway.

What makes you say Sanchez is so much more consistent? I guess I just disagree with that assessment, I think they're both great players and would love either.

I suppose I overstepped a bit with the last claim, I should say it depends on type of player. Beckham's game was fairly simple, putting in great deliveries down the wing. Really he was more of a wide midfielder. That kind of player can be consistent in what they do, but I think the more tricky, adventurous wingers are always going to be a bit more inconsistent. When they're on, they're really on, other days things just don't go their way. Sometimes I feel those type of players catch way too much flak for that.

£40 million is a fine fee, but we could probably get it for £35 plus bonuses. What wages is he on?

di Maria will obviously become the most hateful face in the Premier League, especially with Suarez bailing.

Just read a stat that says he has 84 goals/assists in 124 league games for Real. Not sure how accurate it is though. If it's true then you can't really expect much more productivity than that.
Aye but Ozil got 61 assists and 29 goals in 2 seasons. Wasn't much kop for Arsenal last season.

Ozil got 5 goals 9 assists in 26 starts and 1 sub in the league. Silva got 7 goals and 9 assists in 25 with 1 sub. For a first season, he did alright (I know Silva brings other things).

There are plenty of differences though.. Di Maria works hard and when he's perhaps having a poor game in terms of creating, he is still tracking back and carrying the ball forward. Plus, Di Maria for us would be another good player in the team - at Arsenal last season, Ozil was seen as their 'leading man' and had expectations on him that Di Maria wouldn't get at United.

He's an unbelievable player. I think he'd destroy the PL to be honest, he'd walk in as the best winger by a mile for a start.

Every time we get an Argentine he ends up bumming us in the end. I hope he signs, but Tevez, Heinze and Veron have hurt me in the past sadface.jpeg.
