His first competitive game in the Europa was probably the best of the season up to that point from someone deployed in the no.10 role. From the next Europa game he was moved out wide. In the league, I don’t think he even featured in the squad till Pogba was injured and basically just made up the numbers.

Solskjaer has chopped and changed in his position over the season, giving time initially to all of Pereira, Lingard and Mata, and the role has settled into a competition between the former two. Gomes’ position has been clear from the off. We don’t replace Lukaku and carefully introduce Greenwood to the seniors, and it took a bit of time but it now appears he is in genuine contention for league starts. We give new contracts to both Pereira and Mata, and Solskjaer kicks off the season with no intention of giving Gomes a fair crack of the whip. Being injury free would have made little difference and contractual issues shouldn’t come into it.
On one occasion it was said injury was the reason for his absence from even the bench and the next moment he was playing for England U20. Another time he played in a friendly for the U19. In both games he played well, from what I gathered. It's possible he has not been 100 % match fit for some time but that can't be an excuse as you pointed out. I have no idea why some continue to refer to the contract situation when Chong who is in the same boat have had far more time playing for the senior team in his natural position than Gomes has recevied as a no 10.

Havr you considered he may have been fit enough to play against other youth players but not fit enough to play in a much more intense PL game?

I think his mind is already elsewhere
I don't think that's the case otherwise we'd have heard murmurs in the press about him going elsewhere like Chong. I think he wants solid assurances over playing time and he obviously wants a payday.

I'm not sure what to think of it all, I'm sick of players using us for a payday and I don't want us being held to ransom but he has the quality to be a top, top player and I'm pretty sure he'd give his all for the shirt.

I think if its about a payday, we're probably the English club who would offer the most. It tends to be us overpaying these days

Tax laws elsewhere may contribute.

If it is a debate over money hopefully that can be resolved, it cannot be a concern about getting chances when you see how many youths are getting minutes with Ole, it may be the case he expected more but basically got blocked by Lingard who was given a chance to prove himself which he has not, I expect to see him more involved now.

Again, if the question is already money at 18/19 you have to question the mentality of the kid... Sorry but Sir Alex's approach was right. Become successful and the money will follow.
Spot on. We dont need another Sanchez situation ...and blow up the wage structure and causing problems in the changing room and then into the entire club's (incl academy's) wage structure later. What if he doesnt make it at the starting 11, then what then? We will still have all his wage baggage.

He isnt some generational player. Sure he has some tidy passing but his size will always be a concern when playing against players a foot taller. May not be suited for the EPL. If we learnt anything over the years, kids that looked great at the youth levels don't necessarily translate into the Big Show.

If we are supposed to be a big club, then let's act like one. The biggest clubs in the world aren't held hostage by some 18y.o kid.

If he doesnt want to fight his way up into the First 11 then feck it. Its as good a time as any under Ole as a manager than the previous regimes.

Agreed and agreed.

He certainly has potential and I hope he signs, but he should be earning 50% of what Greenwood & Williams are if we're talking merit here. On par with Garner maybe?

I feel that we can't abide any player using us as a cash cow going forward, regardless of who they are. Under SAF we always had a bit of class about us, at least that's how it felt to me - a sense that it would be the Evra's & the Solskjaers who were rewarded, not the Robinhos or the Di Maria's.

I feel like that kind of air around a club in turn tends to help attract the right type of player.

Be a shame if it goes that way but hey ho, the club has to come first.

The only one of those slightly above decent is Traore and Icardi. Traore left after being deemed not good enough and is only JUST reaching his potential at Wolves, Icardi was at Barca 3 years and never played. He grew at Inter, not Barca.

For their famed reputation that's hardly a mammoth of world class talent is it? no better than any other top club academy.

My point is Gomes going to Barca right now is no way any better than staying here, infact he'd struggle with game time more in their midfield than ours.
Well Barca has slowed down on their great golden generation, thats normal there's no way they would be able to keep the rythm its not just about the coaches to develop players like Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets the player needs to be special by himself.

But as you said, I think Gomes will struggle to get game time in Barca. Just see how many great Barca's prospects have left due to lack of game time, Dani Olmo, Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara, Thiago Motta, Icardi, Bellerin, Grimaldo just in the top of my mind, there sure must be many more.

But again if youre truly great you can break through in that team, like their new wonder kid Ansu Fati. Maybe Gomes thinks he's that special.

Laurie Whitwell on The Ornstein and Chapman podcast said he's led to believe that we might see him start a game in the PL soon as a bit of a carrot for him to sign a new contract. Really hope it's true.

I'm not sure on what the stand off is with Gomes but if he's asking for more money without really pushing on then I'd let him go. He needs to seize his opportunities like Williams and Greenwood that way we can justify his demands. I'm sure he'd be getting a standard increase anyway but if he wants more he's got to give more. I'm all for giving him more game time to prove it though providing that's the agreement and he simply doesn't want to use us to put himself in the shop window.

I agree completely but I don't think he's been given a proper chance. From what I can remember he's had one Europa League game as a 10, one sub appearance as a 10 and the rest of his limited appearances have been out wide. To have a proper chance he needs to be played as a 10 with Martial, Rashford and James/Greenwood ahead of him and a proper midfield behind him.

Expect him to start against Wolves. He'll have to take his chance.

I say feck it, give the kid what he wants if it’s just about money.

As long as under performers like Lingard, Jones, etc are stealing a living, then highly rated youngsters will always be asking for more.

If you are a rising youth star at United, proven at all age groups in both domestic and international football; you get called up to the first team and you train with them day in day out, seeing players like Lingard in your position getting so many more minutes despite repeated crap performances, you would want assurances too.

I’m not sure if Gomes will ever be able to make it here, but if Lingard continues to get games of him and I were Gomes, I would get the hell out and go to Germany or somewhere else like the other young Englishmen have been doing with success.

I would really like to see him sign a new contract with us. Counter attacking does not suit his play and IF Poch were to be named as manager next summer ( not against Ole, but if he fails to get into Champions League, he's gone) he will change the way we play and Gomes could shine.

He's an 18 year old boy. If he is setting unrealistic demands, they should not be entertained. I'd love for him to be a star for us, but today he is just a youth prospect.

Utter fecking stupidity and lays a dangerous precedent. He's not good enough to demand what he wants.

Yep we are never going to do that and rightly so. Anyway the negotiations will be complicated but the usual.... catch 22 between playing minutes, money, young player opportunities. I.e.

Club: how can you ask for the same money as x when you have many less appearances? We believe in you talent but you need to develop, prove and earn it first.

Player/Agent: how can I get appearances when I am not getting the opportunities to prove myself and does player y deserve to be playing and not me? I feel I have been held back and now I am not getting the contract I could have.

And you think there are no trickle-down effects? There are lessons learnt from the past from Sanchez to Marceda to Januzaj.
We are still cleaning up the mess.

Ha yep that too.

Anyway I have empathy for Gomes because he is in a tricky spot. The club has all the leverage and he has no gurantees. That is hard for an ambitious young player with an agent in his ear. Think though he should take a leap of faith with Ole and vice versa. United is a good place to be right now for young players.

Precisely. Even those on the outside can see it.

So I suspect that it might be about the money. He must have got some huge offer from somewhere and its skewed his view and net worth. Or he just doesnt think he can thrive in a physical league such as ours.

I think it’s a mix of everything. Apparently he wasn’t given as many chance as our other youngster under Ole (Greenwood, Williams, Chong, Garner etc), despite us having one of the worst no.10 options in the league. Then there’s plenty of media talk linking us with other more established attacking midfielders (Bruno, Maddison, Grealish etc), which further hinder his chance of playing here.Adding to the fact that his lack of physical may make it harder for him to be successful in premier league. If I were him, I may want out too.

It was either Fergie or Giggs who said it: "At Manchester United, don't go looking for the money. It will find you," or something like that. Obviously we really don't know what's happening behind the scenes, but hopefully he just keeps his head down and earns his pay, much like the rest of us!

Even from the outside you can see Angel hasn’t been given a chance. Other players are irrelevant. Angel rightly cares about himself and only himself.

He’s held the same view since before he even signed his first pro deal so how has anything been skewed? The issue has been raised by him years ago when he stalled his last contract too. His camp have said he needs assurances of play time and development or he’ll leave. The only time money comes up is made up posts on the caf.

Why hasn't he been given a chance? Aren't we desperate for quality?

Tough to say. If you notice with Greenwood and Williams they got their chances initially against weaker teams and impressed enough to start getting more regular minutes in PL action. Angel has had some niggles through the first half of the season and it really did seem like although he never had a serious issue he would pick up a knock or become ill right before a game that he might have expected to start. I think Rochdale in the League Cup was one of those where we even had an interview with him on the site the day before and he was set to start at 10 but then on the match day he was hurt and had to miss out. Currently we have had a lot of must win games and so of course the more proven ability of Mata and Pereira is preferred but I do wish he was at least getting more time off the bench. He should have been on as soon as we got the third at Norwich and not held back til the 80th minute. Instead of James for Rashford we could have brought on Gomes and shifted Mata to the left so we could get 30+ minutes of Gomes in the number 10 slot.

I hope he gets a few decent chances in the next couple of months but if we sign Bruno and Pogba returns then I fear he won't get another look in with the first team.

He's only 19 and small but it is a bummer he didn't win the #10 job in the 4 months that Pereira and Lingard's play and then Pogba's injuries (once Fred and McTom came decent) combined to make that our least productive spot. Would have been the kind of thing that makes you want Ole to stay and help rebuild us.

Imagine we bought Bruno for 70-80m but he is having hard time finding his feet settling in the league, whereas Gomes left for free and start to kick start his career in similar fashion as Pogba in Juventus, or Zaha in Palace.

He's a bullshit artist, he won't know anything more about his contract situation than you or me.
He is one of the most smug feckers on the YouTube scene. Always saying "a source tells me" or that he is "friends" with certain players (I think that means he has them in Twitter). An absolute arse.

... Shame, because some of the other lads on his channel are okay.
