according to Wikepedia He was born in 1980 making him 18 in his debut season of which he played 26 senior games. (he floated between the B team and 1st team). He was even on the bench in the Champions League game vs Newcastle in 1997 aged 17.
Alright I was looking at it wrong, I guess it was 22 years ago not how old he was. So he was playing regularly at 18

What it means is that Gomes's role in the team wasn't supposed to be our first team & the hero to save us. He was part of U23 player who is slowly introduced into first team.

The one who offered the wages is not Ole. He was already offered new contract & new wages before Ole came in, he has whatever he was left when he took in charge. Lingard is our first team player not U23 player, it makes sense to give Lingard chances rather than throwing a kid to save the day.

You need to understand that not every youngster are the same. Not everyone are like Rashford. Rashford was blessed with incredible pace & physically ready to challenge PL players, Owen is another good example of it. Gomes is not, he's more of a pure technical player.

And again, you don't know what they do in training.
The logic behind this bolded line you wrote tells the whole perspective from which you are fighting the argument. No player at Manchester United should get chances just because he is a "first team player". He should get chances if he deserves one, the guy has been underperforming for years and he should get minutes just because previous sacked managers did not get rid when they should have? Absolute shit logic imo. And no we wouldn't have been throwing a kid to save the day, we are not a player away from saving the day in the first place, but make sure we would have been a better team, never mind the long term planning. That's how bad the senior options were.

I perfectly understand that not every player is Rashford and this has nothing to do with it, Gomes's playing style has never been about incredible pace or physicallity. That's a very weak argument. If we kept him for so long expecting that some day he will develop that, and be ready, than that's tragic. He is the player he is, and is already a better option than the seniors we discussed, and that is the most important thing the kid will look at.

I would say 'ruining his confidence by playing him' is a bit different to 'ruining his confidence by playing him in a pivotal role within a dysfunctional team', and that's what I think the situation would have been had he been thrown in at CAM during the middle of this season. If there was space wide left, that would have been ideal and surely would have seen him get more minutes, although Chong seems to be ahead in the pecking order for that position (maybe because of the contract situation).
There was a space wide right if that is the logic? For some reason, Pereira or Lingard stil got the nod.

Player should get chances if he deserves one and that's why he was being rotated with Pereira & Mata, Lingard was not keep getting the chances week in week out. Whatever the logic you thought wasn't actually the case.

The guy just turned 19. In normal case, 19 is an age when the player is still considered U21 team. You don't know whether Gomes was ready for first team and whether he deserves his chances for the training he put on. It's shit logic imo to take a guess based on talent.

And I'm sure I already mentioned it to you that unlike Rashford & Owen, Gomes playing style has never been about incredible pace or physicality. Young players relied on technique more tends to need more time to be ready.

Any 18 year old CM who can play regularly for a top team must be a phenom. especially since they were back to back title winners in that period. by 21 he was featuring in 50 games in a season!
He actually won La Liga breakthrough player of the year at 19 years old.

Lindelof is a weak defender who has the benefit of the best defensive right back in the world right next to him and helping to cover for him but still doesnt look right, Fred is a better attacking player but worse defensive player than Ander.

The only thing we can judge Gomes attitude on is where we've seen him, on the pitch. And in our 1-0 against Astana he had a great attitude
Righto.
Fred has been so much better this season than Ander ever was for us, it's not even up for debate.
Lindlelof has been fundamental to our defensive solidity this season.
Gomes played well against Astana, there's a big difference in quality between Astana and say West Ham where he came on that time for the last ten minutes and looked lost, not really all his fault but he made zero impact.
If he doesn't want to be here then let him go, if he's not strong enough to rise to the challenge of breaking into the first 11 then let him go. He'll find it more tough at Chelsea.

Not sure how can a United fan who supposedly watched every game this season, not admit that especially Lingard should have been dropped from the team way before he was and not get a sniff in. He was that bad and Ole still found a way to snick him into the starting line up repeatedly. It was not that long ago to be fair and still a very fresh memory.

The management of Gomes can be very easily looked at, there were absolute shit performers who in no way were better than him getting chance after chance while he was not even in the squad. If I was him, I would be pissed as well.

As a fan who only watched the games, I wanted him to be dropped & Gomes given chances just like you.

As a manager/coach, it's different case, we as fans don't know whether Gomes was ready for first team and whether he deserves his chances for the training he put on this season. Calling it blind favoritism and stupidity is not true.

He has so many attributes going for him but at the end of the day he’s 5 foot and 3 inches, thats smaller and more light weight than Messi. I just don’t think he’s physically capable of playing in the prem. Boys against boys and he stands out. Coming up against men and he’ll struggle.
Unfortunately, this is the absolute unimpeachable truth.

Fred has £130 million of extra defensive players to make up for him getting beaten by dribbles more often than he makes a tackle.

Wenger said Modric was too lightweight for the premier league. When he came to Spurs he wasnt trusted to play CM yet and was used out wide

Its possible he's too lightweight, but from watching him against Astana he was almost as strong as Greenwood and stronger than Chong. Dont let size fool you. He was also far more aggressive than each of them with closing down and making a tackle

absolute rubbish and pure recency bias. Fred has 2 goals and 4 assists this year (all in the weakest Europa group we have ever had).

in 2015 Ander hit 13 goals and assists, 2016 (11), 2017 (13). most of these contributions were against English competition and not Europa League group stages. Ander also made the Europa team of the season in 2017 and won the Matt Busby player of the season (voted for by us fans!)

If you wanna compare premier league website contributions

Fred has 42 games, 1 assist, 1 goal, 4 big chances created, 6 through balls, 83 tackles, 52 interceptions, 326 recoveries, 196 duels won, 242 duels lost,

Ander has 132 games, 17 assists, 12 goals, 17 big chances created, 40 through balls, 323 tackles, 227 interceptions, 675 recoveries, 633 duels won, 562 duels lost,

obviously it would be clearer if we can compare minutes played but I don't have this data so this is a guideline (if you do then feel free to post them). the difference in contributions is clear as Ander has made 3 times the appearances yet look at the offensive and defensive contributions. Whoscored also has Ander 2017 season far higher rated than Fred this season.

What exactly does Fred do better than Ander again? One can only conclude it's recency bias combined with the fact that Fred was so bad at the start, so him being good now is being amplified

It's not just his weight, it's his height. Modric is 5' 6", Gomes is 5' 3". Combined height and weight he's just to small overall to cut it in the Premier League.

Why? Why is it important for an AM/attacking CM to be 5'6 instead of 5'3?

And if it is, what if Gomes has a better jump than Modric

Rooney is what, 5'10? There's no way he's 5'3"!

Google actually has him at 1.6m, which is less than 5' 3"!

Half of what you see there is a combination of Angel's hair and Rooney's propensity to slouch.

Three inches is a lot. Ask yer missus. But seriously, someone that small is never going to have it easy in the Premier League, no matter how talented they might be.

Transfermarkt lists him at 168cm - 5'6''. And they're usually right.

Can you tell me why, when we've already put strength and jumping to one side?

If a player has the right qualities it wouldnt matter if they were 5 feet tall

I can't stand stuff like this. Fred has been great this season, but then so was Ander the season he won POTY for us. Now of course one could argue that Fred has been better, but clearly there is a debate to be had.

Small is small. The PL is a physical league. Quality is always up against the physical side of the game.

Thats not something you can say before you even know what type of business Chelsea will do in the upcoming window
It's obviously an opinion, based on his past time at United (he will not play much at United imo) and his talent.

"United have assuaged some of Gomes's reservations about the direction of the club since the start of the season but have targeted three similarly aged British talents in Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, and Jude Bellingham ahead of the next transfer window, which is believed to have discouraged Gomes".

If he's 5'3 he's the same height as Ryan Fraser and Lorenzo Insigne. If he's 5'6 he's also taller than Maradona (!) and Santi Cazorla.

You realize Xavi made his debut for Barcelona at 21 and Gomes is 19 having made his debut at 16 right?

Iniesta made his at 18

If they werent given chances they wouldnt have got games either.
They got the chances because they probably showed in training they were capable enough. I don’t see how you can compare the them to gomes because if they share a similar body size. Talent wise I don’t believe he has it or he would be playing a few games.

I dont think its only about money, and still that would set a very bad presedent. 30K a week for a youngster who's not even nearly stablished in he first team are pretty good wages. We tend to overpay all players, so if we start with youngsters how much would Greenwood ask? Solving all the problems with paying more is a really bad idea.
If we're serious about them as first team players they can be paid well without killing us on wages, which signings like Sanchez or keeping unnecessary high wage guys like Jones and Lingard and Pereira are far worse for.

And besides, we'd be having the loaning team pay us a fee or a good chunk of Gomes' wages.

We have offered him one he’s just not signed it. Either wants more money or more assurances.
He could have had Lingard and Pereira's minutes this year or been on loan starting every game for the 3rd or 4th side in the Netherlands or a mid-table German side. I don't blame him for being unhappy here even if his being 5'3 means he should be more patient than other guys who are ready physically.

If he goes to Chelsea he's not making a smart move unless it comes with the right loan next season, and while they certainly seem to handle that stuff better than us, I still think he'd be better off moving to a good club with better odds of playing time that will give him a release clause he can use to make a move.

Why not loan him to a Spanish club for playing time?
If we'd put him on the path Madrid did with Odegaard he'd have just finished a first full season as a starter at a club like Heerenven which is probably similar to a Segunda promotion quality side or a low level La Liga side that tries to play passing football enough to start Gomes:

17 - Madrid B - First team starter in 3rd division in Spain
18 - Madrid B/Heerenven - Not immediate first team starter at Heerenveen

(Gomes now) 19 - Heerenveen - Becomes first team starter at midtable Eredivisie side, no end product

20 - Vitesse - First teamer at side finishing 5th, 8 goals in 31 games, Eredivise team of the year
21 - Sociedad - Starter at 4th place side in La Liga, Player of the month, Norwegian footballer of the year

Messi is more lightweight than 99% of the world's professional football players.

Football is pretty much a non contact sport these days. Being skillful on the ball, having good balance and agility is what really counts.

Do you consider 30K per week not enough?

just for comparative purposes Madisson is on a 55K a week contract, Grealish is on 35K.

I think 30K is really really good, for a youngster who has proved barelely nothing.

Hilarious reading all these know-it-alls posts. Mistake this mistake that. I’d have loved to see Gomes get all of Pereira and Lingard’s playing time combined this season, but the fact of the matter is he had half a good game vs Astana, and were pretty average the other times he got a chance.

Making it into a safe bet he’d have done a lot better than the two aforementioned disappointments this season in a struggling team is pure fiction.

If he doesn’t see a chance for himself under this regime he can just leave. I hope he doesn’t though, because he has skills many pro fotballers can only dream of. He should really give it a couple of years with Bruno ahead of him and other competitors in his position being either past it (Mata) or shit (Lingard/Pereira). There should be a lot of opportunities for him, if he ever manages to transform potential into performance.

Can easily see this as another Pogba scenario. I feel like he’s going to be a great player in a few years.
