Angelo Stiller | Journos : Player is staying at Stuttgart

Edit: He seems a different profile to what we’ve been looking for. Hopefully a sign we’ve switched to a different position to reinforce if we can’t get our primary targets in other areas, like DM.

Hope we sign him, he is brilliant. But he will be a Bayern player in a couple of years.

ah the ol' monitor chestnut, need to go to exploring mode

This would be a great signing. I suspect he'll be expensive and possibly waiting for Madrid (who will somehow get him dirt cheap at some point).

TM already values him at €45m. So when we come knocking it won’t anything less than €65m.

Completely different profile to Baleba. Do we have an idea of the profile we want or are we just picking out midfielders at random?

The only explanation that would make sense is if we already know we want to go back in for Baleba so are instead looking for a midfield partner one year early, though that comes with some risks.

love him, but that's not happening this summer. Stuttgart played hardball with Bayern re: Woltemade, and Stiller is the most integral part of their game. Season starts tomorrow ... no chance.

I mean this profile is complementary to the profile that is Baleba (from what I have read. Of course I haven't seen him play at all). Our midfield will not be solved with only one signing and I don't think Bruno is going to play as CM for long.

I read he has a €35 million release clause in summer 2026

A player who never forgets to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.

Yeah, lot of risks. We don’t know:
  • Whether Baleba will still want to come next season, as he might have other options.
  • If we’re even willing to spend over £100m to get him.
  • Whether Amorim will still be here, and if not, whether the new manager would even fancy him.

Flip-flopping between different midfield profiles is exactly how we ended up with Casemiro and Ugarte.

yeah, he has. Now, Stuttgart has done well getting rid of those release clauses lately (e.g. they increased Jamie Leweling's salary and he agreed to give up his clause in return), so who knows what happens between now and next summer - but I'd bet on Woltemade and Stiller leaving in 2026 for sure. Not this summer though, especially this late in the window.

Either way, I'd love to have him in a United shirt. He's more of a Carrick though, completely different profile than Baleba, as others have noted.

Fair points. Stiller does seem one of the better players for his profile, I'm just not sure how compatible that is with our current team.

Agree!

Baleba is the type to progress with the ball trough midfield. When recieving the ball, Angelo prefers to stand Stiller and sniff pass options

His fbref profile suggests he's a playmaker type of midfielder. Ranks very high in passes attempted and progressive passes. Nowhere near good enough defensively, again according to fbref. If he's to play in a midfield 2 in Amorim's system, I'd think we need more defensive work from both the midfielders.

He’s a Toni Kross type midfielder from what I’ve seen, plays best as a deep‑lying playmaker. My opinion is that he has a brilliant passing range, excellent at dictating tempo, and has a savage ability to progress play from deep. All skill sets which would suggest they are going for the Baleba types partner now, with the hopes of tying up the Baleba type next summer. Which mightn’t be a bad idea. I think he’s class, but he’s not renowned for his physicality or his ability to win the ball back so there is a risk.

Stiller and Baleba, on paper at least, could be our best partnership since Keane and Scholes. Can’t see it happening though .

Yeah that would make sense, however like you says it carries a lot of risk if we miss out on Baleba

How does Wharton score so highly on progressive passes, yet so low on forward passes

I'm trying to wean myself off posting the analytics graphics, mainly because I'm sure if I trust the numbers.

Really good player. Him or Wharton next to a Baleba-type player should be how we look to build our future midfield. Even right now he could come in and give us a bit more control and steadiness in the middle. Won't be cheap though, especially this late. Madrid apparently wanted him all summer and were quoted 50m+.

Even if we don't get Baleba next summer, the profile required would be a similar one wouldn't it anyway so the profile you need to target is spelled out for you anyway.

If Amorim was to go then you'd imagine we'd be playing a formation with 3 midfielders. That opens the door to Mainoo coming back in, Bruno playing higher and still a Baleba type next to Stiller. We need more legs in midfield next season no matter what, ideally this season, but I can understand waiting on Baleba if we think the deal is probable next summer.
