Anthony Elanga | Newcastle

Elanga got 3 assists from freekicks and 1 from a corner, 1 from a throughball, 2 more from crosses and then another 4 from general play

He got 3 goals on counter attacks and 3 other goals from open play

I dont know if perhaps the 2 crosses were from counter attacks. But even if that was the case I think we can safely say from his 4 set piece assists that he can be effective without counter attacks. Wood is obviously a great target for these set pieces but Isak wont be bad either.
Yeah, haven’t analysed his numbers to your level bud. Just went on my general thoughts from watching him (not that often for Forest if im honest). I would say when I made the comment, I didn’t factor in set pieces (I didn’t even know he took them at Forest). Newcastle have some big bruisers in their side so I’m sure if he’s on set pieces he’ll get a few assist again.

I guess let me qualify, on general play, he’s a fairly more effective and influential attacking player in transition/on counter attacks when he has more space to run into.

How do you know you won't pay 70m in the end?

All the ones above you've mentioned. Sancho, Rashford both showed better than they have at UTD for a long time.

Antony was better when he left UTD , than before he left. Simple facts?

All of this is just me saying you guys are negative on Elanga, it's fine, but Newcastle have their successes in the market, and are the type of team that players go to and flourish. Would i have Jacob Murphy at LFC, or you have him at UTD? didn't think so.
No they didn't. In his loan to Dortmund Sancho had a couple of really good performances in the UCL, but otherwise he was distinctly average. Same for Rashford at Villa. If they'd done really well they'd actually have been sold by now.

I said Antony had shown he was better than people thought, but I think that's mostly because he just isn't suited to the EPL. It was a terrible signing.

I'm sure Elanga will do well there, but don't think that means anything.

That's a ridiculous fee! How are Forest fans feeling about this? He never looked much when I saw him play for them, admittedly not very often.
well, as ive said in another post, it depends on how much Newcastle think he can do for them

Yeah I was just responding because I always see the counter attacks thing when Elanga is discussed, nothing personal or restricted to you

I get why the assumption is that he is just good for counter attacking. Because hes fast. But the people that say that are misinformed. It certainly suits him to play on the counter but yes set pieces and general crossing oppertunities can also be a way for him to create a goal.

Really happy for him to get a big move. Always been hard working but never looked the biggest talent in youth levels either at United or at Sweden u-teams.

Yeah, one things for sure, Newcastle sure have built one big, fast and strong squad over there. Yikes.

£55 million does seem a high. But Eddie Howe has a pretty good success rate with his transfers.

Where does he even play? I thought he’s a left winger and they have Gordon

He plays mostly on the right and will compete with Murphy.

Barnes and Gordon on the left even though both Barnes and Elanga can play both sides.

Good transfer tbh since now Newcastle will have 4 good wingers for 2 spots

This transfer angers me. We were desperately trying to sell him and jumped at a measly £15m, when everyone at the time thought we should have got more.

The goal he scored against us last season really hurt. Nobody could catch him not even our new signing Dorgu, who should have done better.

Just to add Elanga and Fernandez (close to Real Madrid) sales, are close to £100million combined is painful (we'll receive a measly £13m of that).

Elanga left two years ago and Fernandez just 12 months ago.

We have to learn from this as a club. Why don't we loan out these types of players for 1-2 seasons to raise their values, see if they mature/improve etc and then implement into our team or sell them on for a higher fee + sell on + buy back.

I don't agree with the Sancho/Rashford parts. They are incredibly difficult deals to complete with the wages they are on now. UTD probably won't give them away low enough to warrant the massive wages. There are a handful of teams in the world capable of paying them their wages. Doesn't mean they were not better away from UTD than they were while there.

Either way we seem to agree on the outcome, Elanga will probably do well there.

This pre-season is going to be hard for him - teaching how to use his pace defending.

Playing up front for Newcastle is far from sun-and-roses this lad thinks it is. It's basically 'moments'.. run yourself into the ground, create a turn over and take the chance.

Can understand why Howe wants Elanga in the team, but does nothing to add to our lack of controlling games with the ball.

What are you talking about? Elanga is probably one of the hardest working forwards in the league. That was the whole reason Rangnick gave him so many games for us.

I'm sure playing in Howe's system is very similar to what he was doing for Forest. Lots of defensive work off the ball, offer some threat on the counter. You talk about him like he strolls around like Mbappe.

I thought he had a pretty good game against Barcelona. Good to see him developing nicely. Shame it isn't for us.

Yep he was a standout for me too. Not really sure why he got subbed off as he was still causing their left back trouble and he had just got a yellow.

Yeah that was weird alright. He was their main threat and put two sitters on a plate only for them to go begging in the first half. Really good performance. Looked like he was shot out of a cannon on the run to set up that second chance.

Elanga was probably Newcastle's best player and Rashford's was Barcelona's. The fun continues

0 goals, 1 assist in 13 matches for Newcastle.

Though Cunha has 1 goal, 0 assists in 9 for United and most United fans would say he has been good/promising.

Is Elango doing poorly or does the scoreboard journalism not work as we sometimes think it does.

At the very start of the season when Newcastle didn't get results, Gordon & Elanga were their most standout players. Now Newcastle get's more results and the standout have gone more to Woltemade, Guimares, Tonali etc.

I don’t have access to all news articles, but is anybody writing about how he is an absolutely mediocre player? I mean yeah they can’t shit on united for the likes and clicks and say how united messed up by selling a player on the cheap, but I’m sure someone is going to spend time writing about his current predicament?

This is yet more evidence that certain players are meant to excel in certain systems but not in others.

Performance stats etc really need to be viewed from the lens of football systems that the player is excelling in.

He'd have been a wonderful wingback in this system for us, IMO, but yeah, never rated him much but he seemed to have kicked on at Forest, under Nuno.

Still think splashing 50m for him was madness - always seemed a limited player who excelled on the counter/in a direct style.

He's young, he'll do alright for them eventually. Barnes is better but never fit, plus he can fill in up front like Gordon.

Should have stayed at Forest, the system they play suits his game down to the ground. He’ll still do ok at Newcastle but will be in and out the team and not as productive o don’t think.
