I mean, he was given a 5 year contract worth more than 200k a week, made the starting no.9 beginning of 2019/2020 season, No Lukaku or Zalatan to compete the striker spot with, Cavani was brought in for 1 year contract as cover, and this season he started all the games except the ones he was suspended for and the odd cup games in the early start of the season, this is an evidence of him being seen as the starting no.9 for the team, and Martial knows it, so yes it's probably a mental issue, but it has nothing to do with the fact of him competing for starting no.9
Being shit and lazy mental issue.

He’s kind of the opposite to Fred.

Great ability and poor mentality/work ethic vs poor ability (by United standards) and a great work ethic.

Both have flaws but I’d rather see Fred out there than Martial. Hard work is the single most important trait for a footballer at any level. You don’t have to be Kante covering insane ground every game but you’ve got to be seen to try your best at least. A lack of god given ability is forgivable because it’s out of a players control, but application is 100% down to the individual. It’s the absolute minimum requirement of a professional sports person.

We desperately need a proper striker and to get him out the door. Greenwood isn’t ready to lead the line but at least he moves.

Surprised he started a game for France given how poor he's been all season. Just checked he scored only 1 goal in 27 apps for them, unbelieveable.

All you ever get in this thread are posters saying he doesn’t run enough yet Rashford runs even less so clearly that isn’t the issue.

Indeed he's been shite & lazy this year, but if we are trying to rationalize why he is so shite, i say it has nothing to do with the fact that he is competing with someone for the no.9 spot, Cavani is not his competition but his cover, that was the plan originally as Cavani was signed on free with 1 yr contract (can be extended to another 1 yr).

I think we bulk up our players, forwards especially, and it affects their mobility and agility.

Just a guess, but the bulking up and subsequent loss of mobility & stamina has happened to quite a few of our players now.
Beginning to see similar themes with Greenwood

Why do we always have to bring Rashford into Martial convos?

There's leisurely jogging around the pitch and then there's purposeful darting and sprinting when we're in possession in the final third to create space for yourself or for teammates.
Martial actually helps defensively when the opponents attack us, but surely even you must see that after the first 20 or so minutes of the game, when a team mate has the ball in the opponents half, Martial is mostly static. I'm not sure I know any other player in the top six in the prem who is as static to be honest.

I actually watch Martial's performances closely (I don't think he was bad vs Leicester for instance, the midfield was so bad that the attackers hardly had a proper look in), as he was my favourite player prior to this season, however even I am not blinded to his issues in terms of his lack of effort this season.

He begins games Ok, pressing, making runs off the ball, etc. but I notice that when
nothing comes off the first 15-20 mins, what you get is diminishing returns. He runs less and less until he just stops trying.
I really hope he turns it around, Ole definitely likes him, but he needs to take responsibility and apply himself more.

He's really had a stinker of a season and I wonder if someone like him (who appears to have a high tendency to relax) will benefit from fans being back.

Anyone saw Martial's amazing 180 degree fast turn and accurate pass for an assist?

The thing Martial needs to do more of is when he comes deep he then needs to turn and go or make more runs from deep. When he’s furthest forward he does make runs and does pull off of defenders all a lot. He just never gets the ball so maybe people don’t see it.

Hes been horrid this year no hiding it but our team generally has looked clueless most of the season any I don’t care who you put in up front, they would all struggle.

Would he be better as more of a false 9? Dropping deep and linking up more.

I can't think of a worse idea right now.

Ole has been putting him wide a lot to try to get him more involved, but he hides. You can tell he doesn't trust himself at the moment and he is scared to be passed the ball. He has 0 confidence. He can't even seem to make a simple pass right now.

Putting him in a false 9 role would be suicide. At least when he's out wide or stuck up top, he is out the way a little bit and we can play around him.

Fair enough, I thought that as against City he was brilliant dropping deep and getting on the ball, and running/drawing fouls.

Makes me laugh how stubborn Martial fan boys can be.

Rashford has been playing injured most of the season and been labelled 'Rashford' and still been the far more productive of the two.

What makes me laugh is grown adults who use the term fan boy.

It's insane really. People have already made up their mind that he doesn't run - whereas more often than not, he tracks back extremely well.

Ummm. He has played a thousand more minutes - he has to be more productive of the two. But this isn't about Rashford vs Martial - it's more about how he's singled out when all our forwards have been poor this season. Just when he had a good game with France, we have 3 more pages of people saying he's not good enough.

Availability is rather important I would say. He has been poor. A dramatic fall from last season. Comfortably worse than Rashford, whilst not having the 'kid' excuse that Greenwood has to fall back on.

Ummm. 0.7 goals and assists per 90 mins for Rashford v 0.4 for Martial. Let’s not pretend minutes played has anything to do with it. And Rashford hasn’t needed to be handed pity penalties.

Martial has a goal or assist every 191 minutes, Rashford every 121 minutes, Greenwood every 461 minutes. Kind of proves my point that all our forwards have been poor this season.

Makes you wonder where we'd be if our forwards had continued their form from the end of last season into this.

We would have cruised it.

Is this factual? Would love to see the stats you’ve used to come to that statement.

Been reading your post history seems like you have a real hatred for Rashford huh?

Not at all, but I also largely find Rashford the most frustrating player in the team most weeks. I think up until this season Martial has always been the superior player and the only reason Rashford has climbed above him is down to Martial's dramatic fall in form rather than Rashford really elevating himself. What I can't stand are the double standards amongst fans and the media that Rashford gets compared to Martial. Both are lazy, both are inconsistent, and yet Martial has never really had the same credit despite being better than Rashford till this season.

He’s 100% had quite a few poor games this season but even when he has more offer than not he’s still contributed with a G/A Martial on the other hand hasn’t.
Of course he has, but he’s still been in our top three performers all season. Which says a lot about the rest.

Just wanted to hear opinions on this.

Would you say Martial has improved as a player since his first season here?

If yes

Comparing 15/16 Martial to the current one, how much better would you say he is?

And how much better did you expect him to be at 25 back then?

So you don't have the stats then? As for the rest guess you see what you want to see because Rashford gets plenty of shit thrown at him, funnily enough going off you're post history you seem to be one of the main ones doing it  People judging Martial this season has nothing to do with nationality or Rashford he's just had a shite season. There's still time to turn it around and hopefully we can win a trophy.

Think you're looking at it the wrong way. Rashford's always been the one to make way for Martial so Martial SHOULD be performing better than Rashford at all times, especially in goalscoring. He's the guy who's supposed to be playing centrally and furthest forward!

Martial wants the No. 9 and to play centre, so Rashford (who started his career off as a CF) gets bumped to the left wing. Whenever Martial can't hack it in the centre and gets moved to the left, Rashford gets shunted to the right wing. When people compare the two, they forget that Martial always gets first dibs on favoured position, Rashford gets the sloppy seconds. Despite all this, Rashford provides the end product and yet Martial STILL can't perform consistently like he should. So what more does he need? A psychologist at pitchside?

I cannot fathom a good reason why our left forward has consistently matched or outperformed our centre forward in goals and assists every year. Either Rashford is an amazing left winger (which he isn't), or Martial is really not that outstanding in the centre (probably more the real reason). Does Erling Haaland let Jadon Sancho outscore him? Feck no.

Hardly, my criticism of Rashford has largely been constructive aside from odd moments of frustration. I’ll admit ive always been a massive fan of Martial but even I’ve said on numerous occasions that he’s had a shocking season (and worse than Rashford for what it’s worth.)

Just had to watch a compilation to refresh the memory (i know they're not the best way to judge a player) but some of the stuff he was doing with the ball that season was magical would swap anything to have that Martial back. I guess we still see glimpses of it every now and then but no where near enough.

Statistically he had his best season for us last year did he not so i suppose you could argue he's improved but he's no where near lived up to the expectations of the player we thought we had, at least imo anyway.
