Anthony Martial | Joins Monterrey

Injuries, attitude or ability? All three?
It seemed clear to me that Martial couldn't move properly around the last year he was here through injuries. Couldn't keep his balance or run, this from a player who relied on that for his game. Just physically shot. He was ready for retirement/lower leagues then, just previous reputation getting him moves these days.

Hate to see it. Kinda sad seeing so many people happy that his careers gone down the shitter, even sadder when probably a high % of them are United fans. And before anyone responds I know boohoo multi millionaire, his own fault etc etc.... He was a player a lot of people had high hopes for at one point and he wasn't all bad for us.

His decline is shocking. With 25 starting striker for Man Utd and scoring over 20 goals.
With 30, amateur level football player who can't score in Greece and Mexico.

Wtf happened there?

It's mad the number of players from our wilderness years who've spent years here doing very little, left on a free and then can't even get looked at by serious clubs. Or they've even retired. Jones, Bailly, Lingard, De Gea, Martial were all on our payroll until very recently. Pretty sure I'm even forgetting a couple.

Attitude, workrate and discipline

Tale as old as time - plenty of players with bags of talent but just cant be arsed into putting the effort

Erm, definitely not sure de gea belongs on that list.

Rashford FC won. Their peak was comporable, but Rashy has far more versatility, longevity and application.

Martial more silky and gifted in dribbling.

If he was hard working, would have made a great winger with his dribbling. Shame he wanted to play striker which never suited him. He was a defenders nightmare when dribbling inside the box.

Not surprised by his decline. Talented when young but a warning to the youngsters how a career can turn out. Unless your aim is just to make money!

He was looking decent whenever he played in Ten Hags first season after coming back from ligament damage. But in the second season, he was completely hopeless.

It’s strange as Welbeck had far worse injuries and seems to be improving. I can understand Martial losing his explosiveness, but the very good players adapt their game. Martial isn’t anywhere near him, but look at Aguero when injuries took their toll on him and he lost his explosiveness. He turned into a fox in the box type striker. Martial could have changed his game because he was a good finisher, but his main problem was that he didn’t bother making any decent runs.

I can't think of many players who've fallen as far short of their talent as Martial. Martial the teenager was absolutely fecking electric. Good finisher too, and had the build, technique and speed to be a really good PL attacker.

Those injuries definitely knocked him back, but unlike Welbeck mentioned above - he was either unable or unwilling to put the work into adapting and improving. Shame.

Please don't put De Gea in the same sentence as Jones, Bailly, Lingard and Martial. Those four had all kinds of issues and were more often shit than good, but De Gea was one of the best keepers on the planet for the better part of a decade. Jones, Bailly and Lingard had perhaps only top quality 3 or 4 matches during their careers at OT. Martial had that one glorious season but that's about it.

He was great for Fiorentina last season actually

He's terrible this season and they're getting relegated
To be fair to DDG the entire Fiorentina team is terrible this season. That squad is easily capable of 10th place minimum in Serie A and yet every single one of them has fallen off a cliff together and they are almost matching Wolves for futility.

It's forgotten now but his ability to beat players as a winger in wide areas disappeared very quickly. That's why he switched to the 9 position.

I don't think the penny ever dropped with Martial as to what it takes to be a top footballer. He didn't do anythjng with enough volume. He wanted to play at his pace.

When you see a guy playing like that you can only imagine his training was the same.

Right? How does that change what I said?

That's unrelated to what you initially said. Having a year out has nothing to do with not being looked at by serious clubs.
He must've turned down Real Madrid and Bayern Munich then and chosen to sit on his arse for 12 months.

We forced him to play upfront to accommodate Rashford’s breakthrough.

And his decline was all on Ole who forced him to play injured and allowed him to slack off during training.

We didn't force him to play upfront. He preferred playing striker and his two best periods of his career were when he was playing striker for us. Unfortunately just as he was establishing himself as a top striker he had those injury issues and never recovered.

I'm living in Mexico currently, and I've tried to watch Liga MX once it's dreadful.

Too much time and space on the ball, defenders let it bounce. No pressure.

Genuinely awful, I wouldn't be surprised if a U15 team in Europe can beat senior sides in Liga MX.

How Martial can't score is baffling, what a fall from grace.

Links back to hard work, he had the natural ability to dribble however modern wingers are required to trackback. I think he saw himself as a striker which really he isn’t.

I think he wanted to play upfront, I’m sure he saw himself as a striker. He also does not have the tools to be a natural striker.

He isn’t a natural striker, thought he took a wrong turn. He doesn’t have the movement.

But even with that, he surely should be scoring in that league.

Martial talent wise had much more potential than rashford. But as you say rashford has had a better career and is still writing his story at Barcelona and likely to have a title winners medal this season.

Its a shame about martial, he could have been much more. I think injuries is the defining difference though.

Don't think so, only if you over emphasize being able to dribble st a high speed. Rashford's speed, runs off the ball, crossing, long range shooting made him a more rounded forward for me. Not as silky and smooth, but has more dimensions to his game.

Martial had great dribbling skills, intuition and a mean inside foot curler but Rashford has many assets of a forward. Possibly none or very few to the elite level.

Yeah. Ended up like Ronaldo and Messi. Ronaldo scoring and winning everything under the sun while Messi only dribbled then sold out to India.
