Anthony Martial | Joins Monterrey

Offered to 6 clubs... Shame but injuries ruined the guy. 2019/20 was a great season from him.

The fact that's his best ever season says it all really. Scored the same amount of league goals as Raul Jimenez. Two more than Tammy Abraham. 5 less than Danny Ings.

That's the mad thing about him and Rashford. Their best ever seasons weren't even objectively "great" Strikers who wouldn't get mentioned in the same breath as them have had better seasons, playing for much worse clubs. Chris Woods got more goals last season than either of them have ever managed. And we're talking about a couple of players whose best seasons were huge outliers from their normal return in front of goal. All of which explains why their careers are where they are right now.

Rashford's best season wasn't "objectively great" for a wide forward?

My favourite post Fergie player.

I think Ole said that at half time during his last game in charge here, he basically asked the players who still wanted to fight for the badge on the overlap. Well, Martial came on at half time which says it all.

People always questioned his motives but he he pretty much ruined his body by playing through injuries for us.

Rashford didn't play as a striker in that season. How is that a fair comparison?

How this guy managed to last 9 years at Man Utd shows how crap the club was run.

Monterrey is a cool team, I hope he does well there. They've got some big names, besides Ramos. Sergio Canales, Carlos Salcedo, Lucas Ocampos, Hector Moreno

Canales is still playing!? Actually just checked, he played more games than I thought he would have die to the amount of injuries he used to get

Should have always stayed in the wings and built his game there. His dribbling was good attracting players on him, just needed to be fit and accept he wasn’t a striker.

Never lived up to his potential.
His two best seasons were when he was playing at striker. His debut season and then 19/20. In 20/21 he then got the leg injury that he played through for months, and he was never remotely the same again.

So that's what Sergio Canales is up to these days then. Cool.

You mentioned him and Rashford and then compared their goal scoring record in their best season to Chris Wood's last season?

On Martial specifically, he offered more than just goals to the team though.

You say that as though Chris Woods’ only job is to put the ball in the net. I’m willing to bet his hold up play and ability to compete in the air is miles better than either of the two United players.

Anyway. That’s beside the point. He’s Chris fecking Woods. If Martial and Rashford were as good as some of their fans seem to think then they shouldn’t even be in the same conversation as him.

The fact that run of the mill PL forwards like Chris Woods and Danny Ings were able to score more goals than our two did, in their best ever seasons, despite playing for much worse clubs, is the main issue here. And it speaks volumes about where they stand in the grand scheme of things.

Hence Martial is being punted around clubs in Mexico, aged 29, and we can’t find a club in Europe who will sign Rashford at a knock down price.

It was good but not great. Plus he played centrally quite often in that season anyway. A great season for a wide forward would be what we’ve seen from players like Henry or Salah. A lot of the best and most prolific goalscorers ever would be considered a “wide forward”. Scoring <20 league goals from that position does not constitute a great season.

Well Rashford is at Barcelona and Martial isn’t wanted in Greece. I’m not sure you can lump them in together.

I’d say Rashford’s best season was the one he broke his back in though and was great up to that point for me.

Still only 29!! Feels like he's been around forever

I liked him, if his body didn't betray him, he would have been an awesome player.

Yeah, agreed. He looked like he was on his way to be a proper world class player that season. Never really happened for him though. For various reasons. Not his thread, though, so I’ll leave it there.

In his breakthrough year he looked a world beater in the making. Then under Mourinho, initially, he was on a really great trajectory, him on the left and Rashford up front were two of the early bright spots. Then we signed Sanchez, and I think we all assumed to play on the right and complete the trio, but he weirdly took an in-form Martial’s place and he couldn’t recover. Finally he had a six month period under Ole where he looked the complete package as a forward. He scored a fair few goals but it was his general hold up and link up play that made it look like the penny had finally dropped and he was set to finally become an elite CF. He started the next season like shit, bizarrely, then got injured and was wank ever since.

The guy had, on his day, elite level footwork and finishing, and was superb at coming deep to get the ball and link up play. Unfortunately, over 9 years he showed it for a total of about a year, broken up into three different patches. A complete and utter waste of massive talent. Just didn’t have the mentality or durability to be a top level player. Should have been sold many years before he finally left.

Have no feelings about this guy

In an era where it's been a chore to watch United for over a decade, he made games enjoyable. Can't help but love him for that.
Yep, lovely player on his day, just injury prone and had a bit of a sulk when he had his shirt taken from him for Ibra. In his defence also, he wanted to leave quite a while before we actually sold him, we're just terrible at selling so he sat around for ages playing a bit part role.

His goal record for France must be one of the worst for an attacking player. 30 games and just 2 goals

His injury record was obviously terrible and it destroyed his career. My issue is his on pitch attitude and woeful work rate. The best close control I've seen from a United player in ages though.

Don't think he played much - it's like 13 games worth of minutes with 2 goals, 8 assists. Not terrible, just nowhere near enough to get into that first team.

Easily one of the most overrated players in the post Fergie era. He had a Ballon D'or clause in his contract for feck sake . At 29 he became a washed journeyman who isn't wanted by a mid table Greek club. That tells you everything you need to know about him
