Antonio Conte | Napoli

Without a doubt we'd do a lot better with him, but we might move in the Arsenal/Stoke/Mourinho United direction of big physical players and direct play. Hey its better than 16th

The manager we should have got instead of both mourinho and ole at the time

He'd have not lasted half a season here. Not because he's not good enough, but because he'd damage the egos of too many of our previous players, and too many fans would side with them just as they did when Mourinho wanted to clear out the troublemakers

Why though? He just won a title with these players!

It's actually a squad lacking serious depth. They've had to play a left back at centre back due to injuries to Boungiorno. His replacement was Juan Jesus who is average at best but was also injured.

They have no real cover at right back, midfield cover is only Gilmour and Lukaku's back up is Simeone who has 2 goals in 50 appearances. They need 5 players minimum

Most Man United fans put Conte below Eth, Amorim, Thomas Frank, Glasner.
They do? Are you sure? Conte is a great top tier manager, hes just on that level below the very top like Pep, Klopp.

Hes light years ahead of those names though, although to be fair we dont know exactly what some of them will achieve yet.

Yeah. Look at the thread “who do you want to replace Eth”. Luis Enrique = overrated, mindless passing, bailed out by MSN. Conte = dinosaur football, will ruin everything with his ego. Amorim = top prospect, I only want Amorim and none else.

Wow.

Hadn't read those.

I guess in a way people get what they wish for.

Napolis gain.

Which was a bit of a miracle, especially since they lost Kvaratskhelia in January. Not being in Europe also helped a lot.

Napoli lack depth and frankly they weren't that great of a team. Conté made it more than the sum of its parts, but they won't be able to challenge for the title next season without reinforcements and they're in the Champions League too.

Antonio #Conte and @SSCNapoli towards separation. The choice of the Azzurri for the bench is Massimiliano #Allegri : they try to close immediately

He blows up everywhere. Good at drilling teams for one game a week though

Amazing league manager, top3 coach in the world probably when he has to manage teams that play once a week but his results in UEFA competitions have been laughable..

Let's not forget:

- He took 7th placed Juventus team and won 3 Scudetti with them (2012-13-14).. but it's under the Massimiliano Allegri era that they reached two UCL finals (2015,2017) and that were really considered a world class club..

- Took 10th placed Chelsea team and won PL but it's under the following managers: Sarri and Tuchel that Chelsea won UEL first and then UCL

- Did great in the league for Tottenham the first season but european silverware came with Postecoglu

- Took an Inter team that finished back to back 4th in Serie A and won Scudetto but it's under the following manager Simone Inzaghi that Nerazzurri, thanks to two UCL finals in 2023 and 2025, are now rated as one of the best clubs in the world.

He's very good but he got outperformed EVERY single time by the managers hired after him
So what I’m getting from your post is that we should hire him to win us the title again and his replacement will make us CL finalists again.

Suspect he will take a break and hope the United job opens up in the next year.

Sounds like he wasn't happy with the project for next season. Bad inclination on Garnacho too, I'm sure he wanted him as part of it.

Yeah that’s not how I remember it at all. A lot wanted Enrique. Nobody wanted Conte though. I don’t recall Amorim having many votes in the poll as nobody considered him , but when the news broke most were happy with him getting a chance.

Allegri is his possible replacement.

United won't sack Amorim. I'd be surpised if they do.
Amorim will be in a job till end of next season, unless we lose the first 10 games of the season.

It then might be worth INEOS understanding that the Utd job currently requires a very experienced manager ala Conte, Allegri, Ancelotti etc.

I think it's become the hardest job in football now.

So don't even try to defend your title?

I'd get it if he was going to Real Madrid or something. But I heard a rumor for Juve? They don't seem to be a better situation.

Maybe he’s just becoming wise to his limitations. He knows he needs a top 11 to maintain his reputation, he knows players and environments grw weary of him, he knows he struggles with combining league and Europa cup, so he just goes travelling from top club to top club maintaining a very impressive percentage of league titles.

This certainly doesn't apply to him. He isn't being offered Bayern/PSG/M City jobs... When he won it first time for Juve, they hadn't been in a title race since 6 years at least.... At Inter they'd not be in one for 8/9 years (but they were a top team and a legitimate candidate).

Napoli and Chelsea are a bit odd in that they'd won it 2 years ago but both were coming from a horrible season, finishing 10th and having lost some very important players. Neither were top 3 favorite to win it as Conte arrived.

With Napoli he literally got to deal with his best player (Kvara) getting sold in January. With Chelsea he basically lost Costa who wented to leave but stayed and stank the place over the last months of their title winning campaign...

By top club I didn’t mean top 5 clubs in the world, I meant clubs with the resources and squads to compete at or close to the top of their respective leagues. This went for Juve, Inter, Chelsea and Napoli, in spite of their recent results. Not quite for Spurs, IMO.

Sure beats having Allegri. Looks like Conte may have got his way with his transfer demands.

That's bad news for Juve fans they realy wanted him back in the Juve dugout.

He likes older experienced players. So he'll never work with American / owners focused on return on investment. Saw it at Spurs and there's no chance he'd go to Utd or us now.

It's bad news for Juventus given they'd put all their eggs in the Conte basket

They're going through a new change of management too apparently, Giuntoli lasted 2 years

Very curious to see how he'll fit De Bruyne on that team

Alright Conte, we have plenty to choose from this time:
  1. Hojlund
  2. Zirkzee
  3. Onana
  4. Lindelof
  5. Sancho
  6. Rashford
  7. Antony
  8. Shaw
Take your pick. Get 3 for a 5% off. Get 5 for a 10% off. Get all for 15% off.

Wonder how this place will react when Hojlund scores a hat trick against Spurs in CL next season...

he want Garnacho and Hojlund, please Napoli make his wish come true
Man United fan cycle:
- excited about new signings/ new players coming through the academy
- the player shows promising signs
- the player’s form deteriorates due to bad manager/ culture
- Fan calling for the player’s head “he thinks he is bigger than the club”, “cut the rot”
- fan happy to see the back of the player “20m was a good price, none would have bought him, he is limited” (Mctominay)
- player excels at the new club
- “Premier league too physical, he is good at lower level leagues like Serie A and La Liga”
- use the transfer money to buy a new player, who unfortunately fails again due to bad management/ culture
-“the problem was never about selling X, its about replacing him with Y”

Neither Luis Enrique nor Conte are even options on this poll. https://www.redcafe.net/threads/life-after-eth-—-the-next-united-manager.484577/

Just look at the poll. Ruben Amorim is at the top. Ahead of Tuchel. Ahead of Nagelsmann. Ahead of Inzaghi. All proven winners from top 4 leagues. That is all you need to know.

I just think Milan are irrelevant now. I am pretty much a neutral nowadays. With a soft spot for Milan, Real Madrid and Man United (sometimes).
Just get a top manager. Problem is not the players, especially not with Garnacho. Try to tempt the loser of the CL final. If not then Xavi is available. If he is no good then kick him out by Christmas.
Rinse and repeat.

Agree to a decent extent — our fans fall foul of the cult of manager too often. Managers should generally be treated as disposable as fans see players.

There certainly is potential here for Napoli I think, it's been a long time since the classification of big boys in Europe has seen any changes and aside from artificial rise of psg and city the exclusive club has seen no new members in it's ranks but I think Napoli could possibly change that, they already have that romanticism that is a prerequisite for any club to be considered special and they certainly have fans in abundance, what they lacked was silverware and considering how financially healthy they seem to be a few more prudent signings and they could potentially address that as well.

Exciting times ahead for them, if they pull it off i could see them becoming a very attractive destination for top players.

I just think it's a miracle that him and De Laurentiis manage to have an entire meeting without headbutting eachother.

The wheels will probably fall off sooner than later but it'll be great fun.

With hindsight included there wouldn't have been anyone better to bring on after Ole was sacked, he always goes after a few of our rejects and he would have had the whole bunch of he came and his transfer demands would have also been met unlike what usually happens in the more financialy restricted Italian teams and spurs who are what they are.

Would it have been enough for a league title, would he have left us worse than he found us when it all inevitably went awry? Hard to say but he would have probably given it a decent go.
