Antonio Conte Sack Watch (Napoli)

There are a few other (less toxic) managers I would opt for over Conte if we were to rewind back to 2014, and our chances of winning the league would have been similar or greater.
Not sure. You botched the Klopp interview, don't think anyone else gives you that level of success, particularly while lacking any sort of competent support structure

Osimhen leaving is a thing that was going on since they won the scudetto.
He renewed for a lot of money, but listened to offers, De Laurentis chose to cash in on Kim and kept him, with the idea that he would listen to offers this year... dude wants to move but only for top salaries and cool clubs...

long standing situation not easy to solve, it's not on Conte, if anything is on the club... De Laurentis knows that, in fact he still bought the forwards he promised to Conte in the end, even if the sale of the Nigerian was still an uncertainty.
It's a little on Conte for me. He could have diffused things by saying to Oshimen "give me one more year, I'll help you get back to your best and then you can go wherever you want" but instead he's completely alienated him.

For me, no one has come out of this looking good. D Laurentis has had an absolute mare, and Oshimen has, at best, been following terrible advice. All in all, it's a shocking fall from grace for Oshimen, Napoli, and Conte.

I do think Conte is a fundamentally good coach when he isn't falling out with everyone, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Napoli do OK this season, but their financial situation must be absolutely fecked given they were doing incoming deals on the basis that they expected to sell Oshimen, and now not only haven't done so, but have kept his outrageous wages on the books. It could really ruin them for future seasons, so they really have to hope Conte can help them win now.

Osimhen has no interest in playing for Napoli. He or his agent made numerous media comments alluding to that. Conte couldn't have changed it because ADL already said Osimhen can leave if he signed his contract so he wasn't leaving on a free.

The plan last season was for him to sign his contract, give his all and then be sold this summer.

Saudi window is still open for another month I think, so that's still a viable option.

If you're initiating whataboutery with Conte lifting our first post-Fergie PL title then you can't remove Klopp off the table in this parrelel universe. I would have had him and a few other managers over Conte in 2014.

No, he couldn't have, because the club had already decided to sell him. Doing that would have immediately set him clashing with his bosses

Against all odds he is about to win the title in his very first season for the third time in his career.

Again for a team that was way behind according to bookmakers and statisticians.

Juventus at the start of the 2011/12 had about 15% chance of winning the league. He won it. (Milan had 44% and Inter 38%)
Chelsea at the start of the 2016/17 had about 16.5% chance of winning the league. He won it. (Guardiola's City had 32%; We were at 25%)
Napoli at the start of the 2024/25 had about 18.2% chance of winning the league. (Inter was 62% favourite; Juve second with 22%)

Can he start at United in June?

Fat lady hasnt sung yet. They've drawn their last two games and allowed it to go all the way to the wire, he still needs a result Friday.

Exceptional manager, with uncanny certainty he creates teams that are winning machines despite having a comparably mediocre squad

Probably the only manager getting the maximum out of United players the last decade
Changed it to "mediocre squads", he has some decent players of course (mediocre sounds too harsh talking about individuals) but he creates top teams out of them. Has to be massively respected what he has been doing.

So is he really in danger of being sacked if they don't win the title? Seems strange to have a sack watch thread for a manager that's done pretty well this season and will probably still win the league.

Feels like Inter missed their chance these last couple of weeks, I can't see Napoli spurning a 3rd chance to take the title and Cagliari always looked the easiest game and it is at the Maradona. I certainly could see Como getting something out of the game with Inter too, they have been athe real surprise package of this season and will want to finish well in front of their fans.

No. Napoli are in danger of him leaving though

Serial domestic winner. Still pretty poor in Europe though.
He's like the opposite of Ancelotti. Think Conte still hasn't won any European trophy in his career as manager, only got to one final and lost to Sevilla in 2020 Europa League.

That would be Mourinho. Winning Europa league and finishing 2nd to city with 81 points. That's just 2 points short of Liverpool this season and they have a game in hand.

I think we would take 81 points nowadays

Conte got the maximum of United players, winning leagues with Young, Darmian, Alexis, Lukaku and most probably McTominay.

81 points is still our best points tally since Fergie definitely but de Gea won us at least 10 points. We were quite poor on xG and played well in first part of the season, not so much in second.

Yeah that's what I was getting at. Winning leagues with our cast offs while we're nowhere close

A brilliant manager whom I wanted to see replace Solskjaer yet most on here thought I was crazy.

He's always been one of the best in the world and absolutely miles better than ten Hag.

The bald fraud set us back years.

I don't know, I'm not too big of a fan. But maybe that's because the football is dire to watch even if the results are good

Average in preparing his team tactically for the game. Decent to good with in-game changes. World class motivating his players, squezzing the best out of even average players. Mentally strong, well respected manager. Players scared of him doing everything impossible to satisfy their coach. Not a players mate, not a green young coach struggling to survive under pressure of big club.

Not really. You've been pretty close to lesser leagues all season, in all fairness.

What relevance does that have to the comparative quality of different leagues? Just because we’re now in a worse position than we were when those players were at the club doesn’t mean they were good enough to take us where we want to be. Now if he took our cast offs and won a premier league then that’s a different story.

He won the Premier League with Victor Moses. He could probably win it here with the same quality of players

That team also contained the likes of Costa, Hazard, Pedro, Kante, Matic, Azpilicueta and Courtois. Which makes it a lot easier to carry a couple of average players. I will give him credit for converting Moses who was a shite winger into a pretty useful wingback that season though.

I don't even think he has managed to pass the first knockout round of CL.

Along with his ability to get a tune out of our ex players, it makes him the manager we need rather than the one we probably want.

I do genuinely hate watching Conte teams, but I’ve not been enjoying watching us the last few seasons either.

If an Italian then Inzaghi. Seriously talented modern coach not a bit over the hill men like Conte or Anceloti. Soon become a Benitez level of has been.

Only Lukaku and McT fit this. The other 3 were just squad players for Conte in a season they barely needed to rotate:

This is the 11 that he had when he took Inter to the title.

This was by a decent margin the best starting 11 in Italy back then... His Juve 2012 and Napoli 2025 are far from having the best squads... His Chelsea was more like the 5th best squad in England. This is why I don't include his first title with Inter in his big achievments.

I spoke about wingbacks in the Dorgu thread and this is the type of quality needed for the system to work our it just becomes a horrendous attack. Perisic and Hakimi had the ability of wingers in carrying the ball and comfort in advanced spaces.

The system just doesn't work without wingbacks that are excellent going forward without any support.

He did that in his first try with Juventus, took them to their first 1/4 final in almost 10 years by winning the group ahead of CL titleholders back then Chelsea... Went out to future champions Bayern.
He won the group the only time he played UCL with Tottenham, before going out against Milan... He also took Chelsea out of the death group, finishing second behind Roma and ahead of Atletico. Lost ot Barcelona in the Rof 16... Roma that year would go on and lose its semifinal 7-6 to Liverpool (referees helping Liverpool massively) while Atletico went on to win the EL...

- 3 GS exit with Juve and Inter
- Getting past the R16 once by beating Celtic after while also managing Tottenham and Chelsea
- Spending close to 2b over two decades

Stop making excuses for him
