He was sent away for months, and still contributed more goal contributions to that league campaign than Anthony, who apparently “gave us one decent season with a 3rd placed finish”.

Did you miss the part where I said “arguing which one was worse feels like a particularly futile endeavour”?

You can expend as many paragraphs as you like detailing why terrible signing Anthony was better than terrible signing Sancho. Who fecking cares

I care that the poster claimed Antony will be remembered as the worst Premier League signing ever, as I disagree. I think Sancho’s 3 seasons, his disgraceful attitude and his dog shite loans make a mockery of that.
If you don’t give a feck about our little shit debate, why are you even bothering to post? Bit bored?

One of the specific reasons you gave was bogus, so I pointed it out. That’s all.

Ah, so you do care.

I still don’t think it was bogus, Antony was an important player that year and started 4 league cup games including both semis and the final. Sancho didn’t start a single game.
So the point stands, no question who had a better of the twos ”best season” when we finished 3rd and won a league cup (as I posted) and no question the poster was talking shite about the worst PL signing ever.

Even if you say, they both had one ok season, who gives a feck; you’re still left with one mega signing who gave his all, and one mega signing who showed proper contempt for the club that spent 85m on him. The bloke wasn’t just shite, he absolutely took the piss out of the club, he should unanimously be known as our worst ever signing.

Sancho got more goal contributions in the league that year, Anthony contributed more to the league cup. Whoopty do.

I imagine he said ”no thanks” to the idea of becoming a wing back, hence the loan.
He’s got a low wage and he’s a better attacking option than a few who play many minutes so it made no sense to loan him.
I think he just wanted regular football to regain rhthym and self belief. I doubt he minded playing as a wing back. I thought it suited him as a player. That cameo that led to Amad's hatrick vs Southampton was a good example.

You REALLY do care.

If pressing, being dispossessed less often, working hard/chasing back etc didn’t matter in football you’d have a point…. But you know, they do.

Yep, you got me, a two sentence reply is irrefutable proof that I care really deeply about which of two absolutely terrible signing was worse.

It's a funny one for me with the whole "worst ever signing" thing.

I actually quite liked Antony cause he puts in a lot of effort and I think he's a reasonable player. But for the money Vs the output he is clearly up there.

I think a lot of it depends on what we get back for them.

@Regulus Arcturus Black absolutely, for me Sancho was worse. The funny thing is how his Dortmund loan spell, and early days, his Chelsea loan spell were getting hyped. The usual bollox: It was all our fault, he's actually a good player. The reality is that both loan spells have been ridiculously underwhelming, and show us his glaring deficiencies and stinking attitude.

If Rashford and Antony were to come back, so be it, though it's clearly best if both move on. I would be fecking sick if Chelsea paid the 5m penalty - or whatever it is - and Sancho came back here.

Same, it’s one thing being a bit shit but another thing altogether to show the contempt he has shown this club that invested so much in him.

The most depressing part of this discussion is that both are arguably the top two worst signings in EPL history and that they are still contracted to us.

What do you think would be the minimum price we would ask for Antony?
I am sure we will not want to loan him out again next season but will want a fee for him and his wages off the books.

Surley Mount is in the running with his United career so far?

Andy Caroll is up there, as is the laughably shite Mudryk at 88.5 million quid, I’ll throw Keita in there also. Lukaku’s 97.5m return to Chelea also has to be right up there.

Grealish is up there if you factor in wages, he did contribute somewhat in his first season but that City team was the best anyway.

I forgot Chelsea paid 97.5m quid to get Lukaku back also, only for him to play 4 months and fall out with the manager, telling the World he wanted to go back to Inter.
They got 4 months for all that money and had to keep loaning him out as no-one wanted him. Eventually recouping just 25m for him.

I think Lukaku and Mudryk are the top two for me, with Sancho bunged in there somewhere.
Two who showed absolute contempt for clubs who spent massive on them, and one laughably shite player on a ridiculously long contract that then went and got caught doping. (Chelsea probably spiked him to save themselves 8 feckING YEARS of that).

I’ve watched some of his highlights for Betis and he’s not that far away from what he produced here - only there he has a bit of confidence and it makes that half a yard move, or deft touch come off and it shows. We could never fault his work rate and commitment, it was just the final product and I guess it was confidence in playing for United.
He may get a touch more space in Spain but it doesn’t look much different when you watch him.
Of all the loanies this season, Antony is the one I’d be happy to see back if he could recreate this form - and I still think for the money he has been one of our worst buys. But maybe a confident Antony can still playa role. Moot point, as I think the club will, rightly, cash in.
Sancho still the worst big signing in the clubs history after what’s unfolded this season: attitude, desire, work rate….and a complete cnut.

Agree with all of this.

I like Antony, I’ll always have a soft spot for players who put that sort of effort in.

But it’s gone so well in Spain, Betis are in absolutely amazing form and I think he’ll get some decent offers if Betis can’t afford him. Can’t see us not cashing in when we’ll probably have to spend all Summer dealing with the Sancho problem AGAIN when Chelsea inevitably send him back.

Forgot about them too. It goes to show that Manchester United is just quite a bit bigger, much more attention.

Also doesn't help how unsuccesful we have been but the attention Antony and Maguire got worldwide, is really something.

Yeah, also just think that environment is better for him. He will never live up to his price tag here and it will always be used against him.

No one expected anything from him at Betis and it is working wonders for him. Even though he has produced less goals/assists as of recent, he's playing very well for them and is seen as a key player. Hope he and Betis see that value as well.

Yea those surely compete too haha

Also Torres to Chelsea. Veron to Chelsea. They seem to specialise in picking up players at the exact moment they go to shit.

Scored another great goal last night (against Dave!) in a European semi-final. As with all of us, I'm only seeing the clips, but unlike some of other flops, there is a player there and more importantly there is a character there.

Of our loanees, he's still the only one I'd have back - though only as an attacking wing back for 'weaker' opponents.

I agree. But from a couple of full matches I've seen, including Fiorentina, I'm doubtful what he's doing for Betis would translate back to us. He's getting space and time that he just won't find in the PL. He shows up in flashes but he's not the consistent menace that even someone like Garnacho (for all his wayward final product) is at the moment. He's still not even in the same ballpark as Amad. And, for example, the goal yesterday was spectacular but it was from a second chance at the same shot which he was lucky to get, having run across the front of the defence and shot straight into the block in the way he frustratingly did too much for us. His pre-assist was a pass into the box which he got to look at and think about for so long before making - again, that sort of time is rarely afforded to you in the PL.

I wouldn't mind seeing him as an option at LWB. He's not a shift-at-all-costs case like Sancho. But if we get a decent offer we should take it.

100% need to sell him. We shouldn't make the same mistake we did with Lingard, let him ride this high and secure a big move somewhere. Win/Win for both parties.

There must be enough takers now with interest and a decent offer. We will never get the amount we paid for him but just sell him now for a decent offer.

I mean what the feck... that's an unbelievable strike.

Feels like we should be getting £40/£50m for him at this rate
