it’s just a negotiation. Things can change.
Keep fooling yourself, look at the Martinez deal, Ajax pretty much got what they wanted from start. This will be the same for the Antony deal

This I could actually see. Basically toss Van de Beek in to bridge the gap. Financially still feel like we wouldn't do it as it's obviously an overpay, but we would be better off for the season with that.
I know Donnie isn't impressing but isn't that a bit of a joke valuation isn't it - £55m + VDB? I like the idea to be honest though and I know Donnie has been a bit of a flop but that doesn't value him at £10-12m. I'd go more for £40-45m + VDB as a realistic offer as he's still highly rated in Holland and a Dutch international midfielder.

I mean Pereira just went for £10m + add-ons and what the heck has he done? I think Donnie is a £20m player still for the right team

Is there seriously no other option?
I don't trust attackers from Dutch league. The quoted price tag is also crazy.
Try and name an available young left footed right winger who is likely to adapt well to ten Haag’s football…

Seriously try and find one that isn’t as much of a risk as Pellistri or Amad I’ll wait.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
80m euros gives Ajax around 63m euros due to the 20% they have to give Santos. If we value Laird at around 15m euros then we have to give 48m euros plus 20% on top of Laird. So £50m plus Laird gets it done. Make it so.

Do. Not. Want.

We have like 6 wingers and ONE striker, who is 38-years old and apparently wants to leave. (No, Martial is not a ST)
Another manager, another transfer window, another sorrow.
No balance at all.
I hope all this is media b.llshit and someone is doing his job.
Even a kid will find shocking buying another LB and CB as first signings.
We have Rashford, Sancho, Martial, Elanga. Who else are you counting?

The way I see it:

LF: Sancho/Rashford
CF: Ronaldo/Martial
RF: Antony/Elanga

I think that's a pretty good set when you consider a number of them can interchange if injuries creep in.

Is it? Varane has been injury prone and poor. Maguire and Lindelof as a pairing, even if you like them, cannot play a high line together which ETH clearly wants.

Also, just because you want a CM for example - which I think we are desperate for - it doesn't mean we don't buy others in the meantime if we know we want them too. You'd miss out on most targets if you operated on the basis of having to tackle one area and refuse to recruit in other areas of need until priority #1 is done.

It would be a fair point if spending in those areas meant you can no longer afford to address more key areas but that doesn't seem to be the case as we're still clearly in for FDJ.

I take it is this all dependent on Ronaldo leaving?

Would 100% take Antony over Depay.
Apparently not, which is great to hear. And I'd happily pay double double Delays price for Antony. Depay would be a very underwhelming signing in a window where we need someone to help us get to the next level.

The de Jong deal I’m far less confident about but can see this getting done, though do hope we explore adding in players, presumably Laird given they apparently want him. I think the total deal will need to meet their price ultimately. They’ve no real incentive to compromise.

I feel like he will be a serious success at United. The post made the other day about being progressive with the ball is very good. I heard an Ajax fan making the same admission that Antony is in the mould of a more old school wide player who's not so much an inverted goal threat but makes things happen. The last individual to do this to a very high level is perhaps Hazard at Chelsea.

The recent result today is not an indication of squad depth, this depth was needed even when Ronaldo, Greenwood, Rashford and Sancho were beginning the campaign last season.

I personally see it more as:

LW: Rashford, Elanga (more direct runners allowing for Shaw/Malacia overlaps)
RW: Sancho, Antony (more ball progressing, link players)
ST: Martial, Ronaldo/replacement

I think you are right, unfortunately for us. We either pay almost the exact amount Ajax want (over pay) or we don't get him this summer at least. I don't blame Ajax, they know we have money and that we always over pay with the Utd tax.

My concern is we are overpaying for both Martinez and potentially Antony and getting into the Nunez territory of overpaying. Fair enough if they are a success but if not it's a lot of dosh.

I really think Sancho will a favourite under ETH and I can't imagine Antony being bought as competition for him (or vice versa). I think in an ETH ideal lineup, both would be starting.

Think Sancho has the right side locked unless Rashford is out of form.

There's plenty enough games to have them all playing.

Liverpool rotated Mane, Salah, Jota and Diaz last season. City did with Sterling, Grealish, Mahrez, Foden, Jesus and Bernardo. There's no reason why we can't manage Rashford, Martial, Sancho and Antony.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
I reckon we'll see a breakthrough this week. I've been convinced for a while that we'll go back in for him and now things are heating up a bit. Plus they've just signed his successor apparently. We'll sign him and that'll be our business done for the summer.

Yep nothing to suggest they’ll compromise on the fee. Which annoying as it is for us is fair enough really, they don’t want to sell nor have to, so we either pay a premium or walk away.

Only thing that might reduce it is if we have a player they want to throw in the deal (Laird perhaps if that link this week was true).

I think this will get done too.

I reckon we’ll sign a midfielder (maybe not de Jong) and a back-up keeper as well though. Just my hunch.

Agreed, Ten Hag has spoke more about being light in attack. Think this will be it which I won't be too mad at.

Would be gross negligence of the highest order from everyone at Utd(including Ten Hag) if we don't get a CM for ANOTHER year just can't see it De Jong or not
For the record I don't think we close shop if/when we get Antony. Still think we get FDJ and a RB(AWB hasn't impressed this pre season at all)

I still dont understand why people want Sancho to play RW when the stats from Dortmund clearly showed that he is 10 times (just throwing out a number to prove a point) when he is playing LF/LW or through the middle. The season he did good also playing from the right side was when he had Hakimi running up and down the line so he could have a free role and move in to the field. Sancho should play LF/LW and buying Antony would make out attacking options so much more better. Having Sancho (LF/LW) , Rashford/Martial (ST), Antony (RF/RW) would give us speed, movement, creativity, position switching and give Bruno and Eriksen so many options when they have the ball and looking to make a pass. Also Antony is great at pressing and used to play under ETH. We need a RW, as we have needed for 10 years soon, and we should have gone for Raphina, if not for Antony, but he made it clear that he only wanted Barcelona.

ETH has said in several interviews lately that he i still looking to strength our attacking options and i believe that he is seeing what everyone else does, and that is that none of Rashford, Martial or Sancho are good enough for the RW/RF postion. Give Ajax 55m and make it happen.

If this rumour gets stronger and it becomes clear we’re genuinely trying to sign him / make a bid…

Would you be more excited about it than about De Jong?

(I do understand we need a midfielder more urgently)

Not for me and not because I think it would affect FDJ's signing(don't think it will I believe our budget can fit both with sales and we've already agreed a fee with Barca)
He's a £45m player at best and not an upgrade on Rashford or Sancho. The fee he'd cost is roughly what we'd buy FDJ for who's a world class player. Antony has potential but not €80m level potential, at least not yet.
For that cash we'd be best off splitting it to get a cheaper RW and starting RB which improves us far more than Antony alone who'd be taking a gigantic step up from Eredevisie to the PL with pressure to deliver at a level he's yet to attain
De Jong would be our first top class midfield signing since Carrick and would finally break the cycle of good CMs we've missed out on over the years in Sneijder, Vidal, Kroos, Thiago and Fabregas amongst others. Far more exciting

I fancy myself as a top muppet, but as with Depay, I just don’t see this one happening. I don’t know what it is about these deals, just doesn’t feel like they’ll happen to me

Antony doesn’t offer the same goal threat as Rashford and so I see him being more of a rotation initially with Sancho/Rashford.

The problem is the drop off from them to our next best winger is quite significant.

Simply because he offers creativity from the right side that no other player can in our side. We don’t need his goal threat as much as we need his link up play, ball progression and final ball.

I’d be happy enough to stump around £50m on Antony based on the fact I genuinely can’t think of another buyable right winger who is left footed.

No, no news other then that Ajax wants to start with the current squad, maybe extended by a RCB and LCB if there is a nice catch on the market, but that’s about it.No players are expected to leave, even if there is a transfer whish.
The front is nicely packed with quality wit Tadic, Bergwijn, Brobbey, Berghuis, Antony and maybe even Conceicao. ihattaran if fit,
Midfield looks pretty solid too with Kudus finally fully recovered and making a very decent impression. Taylor the new talented kid on the block on AM, Klaasen, Alvarez, Blind maybe bits and pieces of Fitz-Jim and Univar already, but those last take their first steps in the first squad. In the back with Wijndal, Bassey, Timber we’re quite solid, though limited in backup. Schuurs and Rensch do not feel too solid yet and Regeer is another youngster (like Unuvar and Fitz-Jim) on the RCB position. So there we’re looking for some extra power probably. Especially while Nico made his well deserved transfer.
I say “good to go!” instead of “here we go”.
Sounds nailed on Antony will be a Utd player by end of the window.

I swear there is a presser where Ten Hag said he wants to sign options in the forward and MIDFIELD positions unless he meant only FdJ in CM.
If that's the case and we don't get him he's basically Erik Ten Months then because we'll be in for a very long season without a new midfielder no matter which forwards we sign

Career stats for Sancho from WhoScored:

FW/AMC/MF: 21 apps 7.26 rating
AML/ML: 47 apps 7.34 rating

He will cost more after the World Cup and there will be a lot more competition next summer. We have to get him now. Negotiate the price down some and throw in a player. Laird, Elanga or Amad should do it.
Yeah it's now or never

Agreed. People saying they’ll be happy if we sign Antony and then leave it as that. What about the most important position that we need… what we haven’t had for years. A proper DM. We can not afford to neglect this position once again… should of been a priority, if we can’t get de Jong fair enough, where are the alternative targets?!

Wouldn’t be for the sake of it though… we’re desperate for midfielders… are our scouting team that bad they can’t find an alternative to de Jong? Alls we need is someone with similar attributes.

Having not read through this entire thread, do any of you guys have even an ounce of doubt or trepidation about spending huge money on a wide player from Ajax after seeing what Ziyech has done for us?

He won Ajax’s Player of the Year 3 straight years and I think he also won the overall Eredivisie PotY as well. Yet he came here to the PL and has found it much too physical and fast paced for him to get anywhere near his best.

What do you guys think?

Never a guarantee and it’s a different league (literally and figuratively)

But I think it would be a big plus that he’d be joining a regime (with Ten Hag and Van Der Gaag) looking to play the same style of football he’s thrived in and playing the same role
