A few key signings in critical positions added to a young and improving team*. Title challengers coming to the end of their cycle. A style of play that blends the old with the new, built around a core that have grown together. A 5-1 win on the first day of the season…

Anyone else get that feeling where all the pieces are just about to fall into place all of a sudden, just like 06/07? I’m pretty excited…

*incl. Vidic and Evra from Jan 2006 as they really got going in 06/07

Yup for sure. I feel like we might be short in midfield balance wise but at the same time, we have a very good team right now, a young team, and a hungry team. Just wish we had a younger Matic to put in there in which case I'd be really confident.

Differs a lot from the last few seasons though. A lot is expected of us this season and we started with a bang, and that goes a long way.

Sure hope so! Was thinking the same thing when the match finished 5-1.

Yes. Actually mentioned it in the post match thread. Fulham thrashing vibes yesterday.

No. It is one game. Better to wait a few games before starting a thread like this. Our first 7 fixtures are pretty kind though. If we can win them then we can talk again.

Not yet. Not to take the mood down but it is a monumental challenge to win the league against an oil state. Man Utd will need a freak season with no injuries like Liverpool had. But a fun start and we can go into work feeling smug tomorrow.

I don’t know how good of a tactician Ole is but it’s clear he has brought the good feeling and positivity to the club. Something no other manager post Sir Alex managed to achieve. So we have every reason to feel very positive about the upcoming season.

Something great about England blowing the euros. It might just be sign of a great united era :)

Remember all that talk about Rooney Ronaldo bustup and how they proved everyone otherwise?

If we had a striker I felt was capable of 20 league goals I'd be right there with you. My fear though is the lack of a proper striker outside of Cavani will ultimately cost us.

Think we’ll slump a few more teams with scores like this tbh. Once this attack gets going it can cause some serious damage

Geezer behind whoever is upfront in the no.10 spot is good for 20. Sancho and Rashford out wide are good for 10-15 a piece. Greenwood 10. Those are min stats. We’ll get goals, trust me.

Little thing..

Look at the ages Ronaldo and Rooney were at this time in the 06/07 season.

Ronaldo was 21 with a February birthday. Sancho is 21 with a March birthday.

Rooney was 19 with an October birthday. Greenwood is 19 with an October birthday.

It’s interesting to me anyway. Little parallel.

We have a buzz this year! So exciting! Good part is others (non MUFC fans) feel it too.

We had buzz in January and fell apart. I'll judge it after 10 games at least.

I also think we have quite a few fair weather players who like playing when the weather's nice and the pressures is off, consciously or not.

Kind of.

I think we lack the continuity of having Scholes, Giggs and Neville in the squad. The 06/07 team felt like bunch of kids rising up to the level of the pre-existing but ageing old guard.

This team is still too green across the board. Only Varane has winning experience and none of it has been in a United shirt. It feels like something completely new.

I'd personally have Greenwood good for more than 10.

He looked so sharp yesterday.

Rooney-Ronaldo would have to be Pogba-Bruno, who are much older than those two.

But the real difference is that the 06-07 team had many previous winners in the starting XI - Neville, Scholes, Giggs, Rio - and more in the squad - Ole, Brown, o'Shea. And of course the manager.

Not similar this time - Pogba won a few Serie As a long while back, DDG won the league a decade ago, and Cavani won the French league a few times. Varane is the only recent winner of a big league who is (probably) a starting XI player. Apart from DDG, no United league winners.

I was going to start this very thread yesterday but got lazy. 06/07 people thought Chelsea would cakewalk the league after signing Shevchenko and Ballack while we had so many question marks going into the season. Scholes returning from an eye injury, Rooney and Ronaldo's world cup saga and Vidic and Evra being PL ready and RvN leaving. The game against Fulham was truly a 10/10 performance and we didn't look back.

There are definitely parallels between that season and this season but the only thing that is different is we had Giggs and Scholes who were experienced veterans who led us impeccably that season. Rooney and Ronaldo were excellent but Giggs and Scholes' resurgence was so vital that season. We don't have such players that have been there and done that for us so if we enter a difficult stretch I'm not as sure that we'll overcome it the same way the 06/07 team did.

That said it does feel like this season will be seen as the beginning of a successful era. I hope so anyway.

Liking the positive vibes guys.

I thank Ole for getting back to this point where we can be properly excited for a league campaign. It’s been a long time.

20 league goals is a massive ask for Bruno. I agree there's goals in this team though, I'm not worried about that overall. I'm on about those tight games though where typically your striker comes up with the goods. It's a concern.

So Southampton will be playing the role of Charlton. IIRC that’s the game Ole got his first goal after a 2 year injury lay off in, so a Phil Jones goal incoming!?

I think our squad is still a little thin in certain areas but we’ve a really exciting first 11 now. Good spells of being injury free would be brilliant over the coming weeks and months. Two great new signings as well. Can’t wait for the next match which says it all.

Yesterday was a great way to smash into the new season though. Looking forward

I think we'd do exceptionally well to win the league with the current squad. Our first 11 is very nearly up there with the very best and hopefully this can translate to winning some sort of silverware this season.

You reckon? For a normal no.10 I wouldn’t expect close to that, but he got 18 last season even with a big dip in form from like February-May.

Honestly, he’s my outside shout for golden boot.

Nope, not at all. United were in the ascent in Europe in addition to core players maturing and starting to bring it together in terms of consistency and expectation.

Even after one game, jury is still out on Rashford who won't be part of the squad for at least another month. How does an axis of Bruno,, Pogba, and Sancho work?

Need to see how the squad is used across many more games/competitions.

And need DDG or Henderson to really cement the position while playing at their best.

Need some unsung heroes to emerge outside of the typical players such as AWB, McTominay, and DVB. If those 3 players elevate themselves to another level, then this squad will have no boundaries.

It's a big ask. We got 83 points in 05/06, only 74 last season. We were also closer to Chelsea that season than we were to City last season. We also had the greatest manager of all time in 06/07.

I definitely think we can challenge and I don't think a title is out of the question but I'd still have City as favourites, especially if they get Kane.

I can see the similarities but not really. The crucial thing with the 2006/07 team was that they followed up the 05 cupless season with a trophy. I can see us choking if we get a sniff at the league.

I do think this has the potential to be the best side we’ve had in 8 years though.

Funnily enough I think we’re missing that Carrick signing to make it possible. If we signed a 25 year-old Michael Carrick this month I’d be quite confident.

Might be a bit too soon for this thread but…

It’s handy that we’re not really in the title discussion, it’s all city and Chelsea from what I see/hear which isn’t a bad thing.

Would love a 25 yo carrick in this team, even in his last season when his legs were on their way out, absolute class.

We really didn’t realise what we had there until he retired!

This might sacrilegious to say, but it's probably more like Liverpool after the signing of Salah and VVD in 2017.

He's definitely capable, but it's still a massive ask. It would be a career first for him to get more than 20 in the league.

Yeh but for starters they didn't sign them in the same window, but more importantly it took them 3 seasons to win the league.
