Bailly and Maguire clashing heads. No prizes for guessing which one needed an 8 minute treatment after this.

Im surprised Maguire % is not a bit higher, I’d have guessed 95%.

shows why Bailly has to go.

Maguire will never get the credit he deserves from a section of our fans. Fantastic signing.

People don't appreciate what that kind of reliability is worth to us. Even if they bizarrely don't rate his performances.

His ability to play in every game is arguably the best thing about Maguire and I don't mean that as a dig. God knows we've seen the difficulty injury-prone CBs can cause over the years.

Maguire is a freak of nature so it's unfair to compare anyone's injury record to him! But Bailly's record is still an utter joke.

It’s as much a mindset as anything else. There’s players who need to feel fit to play and there’s players who need to be injured to rule themselves out.

This is what I said in the Maguire thread, he always seems to be fit which is a breath of fresh air when we had to deal with Bailly, Jones and Rojo. Also he has been great this season

Honestly, 92 percent seems low for maguire.

I can't recall any injuries.

Bailly is hurt or coming back from injury too much. Bailly is our best CB, but the guy just can't stay on the field. I really wished we got to see more of Rojo and Bailly for the feckery.

I agree about Bailly if fit, never would trust Rojo though sure the best run he ever had here with Jones at the back he was class for about 15 games but if VAR was around he wouldn’t of even put 5 performances together as he got away with 2 two footers in about 4 games during that period

Caption on the photo in OP is unfair. Maguire's skull is 3 inches thick and that's a fact.

Amazing statistic and yeah, shows why Bailly can't be relied on.

Surely, I just have admiration for players who run on crazy. Rojo got away with murder at times, and I don't even know why.

Astonishing really. Where would we be without Maguire? Since he joined we are on for back to back top four finishes..

Too be fair we were on last season for a 6/7th in the league until Bruno joined so I’d say it’s more to do with him. Though we overpaid for Maguire by about 30-40m which brings attention to every little mistake he makes as he is not a 80m defender(nobody is), he has been great this season after a decent one last year and is our best and most reliable defender by a mile.

While he is nowhere near say Rio for example he needs a Vidic like defender with pace to get the balance right. See Rio say weaknesses though he didn’t have many was being the dog like defender, putting head where he could get hurt etc and Vidic was the perfect partner. Maguire needs a pacey defender with no fear beside him. Bailly is perfect but he’s never fit

I'll have it about Bruno but I think the impact of Maguire is downplayed.

I don't think it's any coincidence Pep wanted him and by all accounts Arsenal were interested.

I agree it is downplayed by fans but not the media. As I said Maguire didn’t make his price tag and last season I thought he was only ok but he has been great this season.

I don’t think Pep wanted him even though it was mentioned in the media he wouldn’t suit City’s high line. Stones is better suited to City than Maguire. Yet as you see with England and if Stones was here instead of City Maguire is a better defender. City play to Stones strength and are walking the league so he gets praise if he was here he be getting stick.

I was still a bit unsure of Maguire last season but he has been great this season. Him and Shaw have really stood out in our defence

What's your thoughts on AWB? With Shaw and Maguire looking good we are halfway to having the defence settled..

I do remember around the time we signed him, Pep saying in a press conference that he thought Maguire was a terrific player and that they couldn’t go to those prices to get him.

Worth every penny, gets a lot of xenophobic criticism from people who don’t like English people. Great CB, most reliable defender we’ve signed since Fergie retired.

Dont focus on percentages, he has missed 9 in 109, the odd europa league tie (for example Astana), league cup and fa cup. I think he has played every league game since joining.

Not sure it has anything to do with his nationality, yes he has been reliable in staying fit but a lot of his performances have been average. My biggest thing with him, he needs a specific partner at CB otherwise our fullbacks and the double pivot get sucked in covering his slow asss.

Amazing player, has been fantastic 99% of the games he’s played in, gets criticised for being an “overpriced English player” he’s better than most CB’s in the league just doesn’t have the PR most players do, he was everyone’s favourite CB before he signed for United, as soon as he signed for us he got a load of shit, and most of our fickle fans jumped on the bandwagon. He’s the best defender in the league bar Van Dijk.

I wish him speedy recovery from COVID, but truth to be told I want him gone in summer. He's very unreliable even as a bench option.

Very well said actually. Probably very true.

I think if I was a professional footballer in a different life, I would be like the guy you said who needs to feel fit to play.

On those stats alone, you'd have to either say Maguire has reached 100 games very quickly or Bailly has taken his sweet, sweet time.
Surely him or Bruno will be the fastest in close to our history they barely if ever miss a game

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

That's not really the case. He was quite inconsistent most of last season, with plenty of great games but also plenty of very average games. Then he was downright poor for most of the games after lockdown and obviously was terrible at the start of this season (I won't blame him too much for the latter). He has been quite solid most of this season since then though, but I still wouldn't say he's been 'fantastic'.

no hes done ok but for me he isn't the captain. As poor as we've been upfront, defense has cost us and that' been a re-occurring theme all season. We could have been a lot closer to City

Even if true I feel like city be worse off with him he doesn’t suit them like Stones does even though he’s a better defender. Didn’t city also say they wanted Fred yet he be in there reserves with his passing ability
Disagree completely. City protect their CBS like no other team. Stones is bang average and always will be, Maguire would be considered the leagues best CB at City. Primarily pep needs ball players and Maguire excels in that department as he simply doesn’t give the ball away under pressure.

Best defender in the league after Van Dijk? What makes you claim that? He has been good in the last 2 months, nothing world class, but prior to that, extremely inconsistent, prone to error and his pace has caught him out many times. The best I have seen Maguire at United was the run of games he had next to Bailey in December 2020. Maguire's best form will only come when we have a player that compliments his owns assets, world class defenders can play with anyone. I really hope he kicks on, I always try to support United players whether its Lingard or Bebe, but sometimes you need to be realistic. For me, it has nothing to do with his price tag, he needs a partner that can cover him when he is out of position. He should also be scoring much more from set pieces. A centre back should be pur priority this summer.

Edit: also, i cannot stand the passive abuse some fans give each other by calling each other fickle for having a opinion. I don't dismiss your opinion, I can only challenge it. It's the same with managers, they have there preferred players, look at Ole with DVB. Other managers would have had him in the first 11 by now.

I've backed Maguire to the hills on this forum for the past 18 months and I've got into some lengthy debates with quite a few posters who had it in for Maguire from the off, they seem to have disappeared or have avoided the Maguire threads in recent weeks as lots of fans begin to be won over by him.

Keep reading this in every Bailly thread. I have no idea how this hipster myth has gained so much traction. Must be the classic case of overrating players who aren't in the limelight and playing week in week out.

Bailly has some good qualities but even at his best he is a notch below Maguire. Maguire plus another of his calibre with complimentary attributes would make a top class pair. Bailly is not on that level (may well have got there if not for the injuries but that’s football).

What is this based on if I may ask? Do Rashford, Shaw, Henderson and Wan-Bissaka suffer from the same treatment?
