Massive fan of the Arctic Monkeys. Though for me, i much prefer earlier albums to Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. I felt TBHC just plodded along and lacked any structure.
This has me worries for the next album.

Fans of the earlier sound just have to accept that the old sound isn't coming back.

This is true but at least the old albums exist and I feel like if they tried to emulate something like AM then they would probably struggle a bit. So it's probably better to keep trying to evolve their music?

With that said, just listening to Suck It And See album right now and it's marvellous (and it's my least favourite album of theirs!)

Hope they announce a new UK tour. I can’t wait for the new album.

I think so and I always find it strange when fans struggle to adapt to their favourite bands evolving. Alex Turner isn't the 20 year old kid he was in 2006 and at his age it's pretty natural that he'd want to sing about other things, and experiment with other styles musically. Those 1st albums, their sheer fun of them, the youthful energy, they're going nowhere and they're always be there, but hoping they're gonna create a new Dancing Shoes or I bet you look good on the dancefloor is more an issue of the fanbase than them. Not criticising you personally, just to be clear, I've had these thoughts at time concerning some of my favourite bands, but I just find it interesting, probably linked to nostalgia.

Agree but I tend to have the opposite experience to this - their earlier albums are too nostalgic and I can't enjoy them because they make me feel too old :(

I think new sounds and ideas are best approach for any band that lasts >10 years. A lot of bands will churn out the same stuff over and over and you just end up thinking the new songs aren't as good as the earlier jams meaning only an ever dwindling fanbase tends to enjoys them until they fade into irrelevance. AM have done well to avoid this thus far.

Not a fan of their earlier work but really enjoyed Tranquility Base. If it's more of the same, I'll be pleased
I'm backwards on their discography. Prefer Tranquility then AM etc. The first being my last favourite. But I got into them later so that's probably why.

Fans think they have sense of ownership over the music in some ways, Noel Gallagher has had the same criticism levied at him in more recent times for trying to move away from stadium/dad indie and into some more experimental sounds with David Holmes.

I dont particularly care for the newer Arctic Monkeys stuff but the old stuff is right there should i want to listen to it, further the old thing was so good trying to recapture that moment in time normally ends up being some kind of pastiche so its not worth it they arent the 1st act to try and move on and change their sound do i like it no but then they are not making music at this point for the fans as they have already provided enough of that, they are doing it for themselves and their art.

Agree with you and much of what was said before. I didn't like TBHC nearly as much as the first 4 albums, but I totally get that they're not the same people they were 16 years ago, they don't have the same desires and inspiration. They owe me nothing, and I'm just glad that they're making music for themselves. Certainly always excited to listen to anything new from them because the track record is that I like most of what they put out.

I agree. Completely unrealistic to assume that a band as creative at the AM’s will stick to knocking out the same music. I wouldn’t want them too either as I’m sure it would get stale.

Want to love Tranquility Bass Hotel, but just don’t think it’s a good album and it sucks when the play the tracks live. Seen them a few times live and apart from 4 stars, all the songs they play from Tranquility kill the crowd vibe.

I just personally feel that the earlier stuff was better. You listen to it know and it still sounds fresh.

This video goes to show that…

I agree with a lot of this but find with bands like Arctic Monkeys that the longer they go on, the further they get from whatever made them great to begin with. It's almost like they start to feel like they've outgrown the basic joy of writing great tunes and need to prove themselves by becoming sophisticated. Which usually just ends up dull and inferior.

I get that bands want to progress and experiment - they're artists - but I'm less keen when that results in an ironic take on 70s soul or 80s synth pop. It's the curse of the moderately talented indie band. See also Arcade Fire and St Vincent.

Seems like it'll be a grower. Definitely a lot closer to Tranquility Base in style.

Very much in favour of giant stadium rock acts releasing music that doesn't sound like it was made by people particularly bothered about being giant stadium rock acts.

New song sounds like Richard Hawley if he was trying to write a Bond song.

Saw them at Reading Saturday and agree. It wasn’t a great performance overall though the speakers being fecked didn’t help. But yeah TBHAC doesn’t equate to great stadium/open air music and I loved that album. Think it’d go down a lot better in a the acoustics of a small venue. Probably didn’t help that I’d just seen BMTH own the whole weekend but AM felt a little flat.
Don’t think this new song will be popular amongst a certain section of the fanbase either or those hoping for a return to AM style. But they’re always evolving and trying new things so it shouldn’t come as a shock.

I just couldn't get into their last album, tried to listen today and still couldn't.

It's not the change in sound as much as the content, it does nothing for me. I'll listen to the new album with an open mind because I was never the biggest AM fan even when they were doing rock.

Probably in the minority from the few reviews on here but there is nothing to this song, its like lift music to me, it doesnt have any balls or heart, it doesnt grab you and when it was over i didnt think wow i'll give it another listen.

I'm not a huge fan of it, but I think it could work well on an album. It's an odd choice for a single release though.

It’s a much better produced song, than it is a song.

That new song is awful. It’s hardly even a song.

They’ve been totally irrelevant since AM. Getting influenced Miles Kane has been the worst thing that’s happened to Alex Turner. Seems like he spends all his time trying to be cool. It’s so forced and unnatural, man’s a walking cringe machine these days.

I'm hoping this new album is a homage of their journey thus far, with a mix of funk that they haven't really explored yet

I'm afraid it's going to be a mix of TBHAC. b-sides, and a morose Alex basically at a crossroads between packing it in, and trying to keep going.

Honestly, who knows.
