Trending topic on the caf at the moment in different threads. And there seems to a few major camps

a) We play great football and the only thing holding us back from even better is the quality of the players on the pitch.

b) Its been good overall and and will get even better next season with better players and more time under Mourinho

c) Dno, it's better than under Van Gaal though.

d) It's shit, any improvement from last season is marginal/non-significant and it's getting worse

I'd say I started the season in C, but the more I've watched us play I still think it's as shit as last season. Especially considering the talent at disposal.

What do you all think?

C. We're reliant on Ibra and Pogba to create chances and I would say the majority of them were half chances rather than anything clear cut. We haven't lost in a while but we also haven't faced many tough teams in the league, so it's still yet to be decided whether we're actually that tough to beat.

No. But I'm willing to give Jose another transfer window and season to address the lack of goals in the team. I have no issues with his ins/outs this year but the reality is the football & results are not much better than LVG or even Moyes and for me that's the bottom line.

Lots of credit however, to putting Rooney to the side and setting up his exit this summer. A difficult thing that needed to be done.

Not really, but is anyone ? Hopefully this is a season of consolidation - hard to beat, don't lose many games, but United will hopefully start turning some of the draws into wins next season and kick on.
If this season ends with the LC and EL in the trophy cabinet that will mean CL football next season and hopefully a decent crack at the Title.

Very disappointed with the season, 6 weeks ago I believed it to be a/b now I'm edging towards c/d.

He is right man for the job, but jeez it's been a disappointing season.

The football is better than last season. Last year we were happy to pass the ball without purpose to kill the game and hope we'd miraculously get a chance and take it. At least this year we're trying to create chances and goals, we're just not managing it.

We have had a couple of (very bad) runs this season that will ultimately cost us the top 4 but we can salvage things with the Europa.

a) Mourinho did really well to get most of his main targets last summer but he really wanted Fabinho also and Varane too but he just couldn't get enough quality in in 1 transfer window. He's built a very solid foundation this season and he will most certainly take things to the next level next season. If he could add the likes of Belotti, Perisic, Naby Keita, Lindelof and Tierney to what we already have while getting rid of maybe Shaw, Darmian, Blind and Rooney then I think those additions can take us to competing again.

n)ot all season no. But if you'd told me where we'd be as a club now last February I'd have bitten your hand off.

Barely, performances and playingstyle have trailed off badly the last few months.

Very strange season. I have mixed feelings about everything. Sometimes it looks phenomenal, sometimes it looks awful. We have won a cup, but we're not in the title race and we'll hardly find a way to the top 4. Meanwhile we're fighting for the LE which could give us a CL spot. Everything is just so confused.
So..something between B and C.

I want to say (b) - but lately, my faith in Jose has been shaken - I hope he proves me wrong - but I don't trust him to come through.

So, I guess I'm left with (d) marginal/not much improvement - in fact, worse for me as Martial and Rash look like they are not being coached properly, instead of it just being the usual 'second season syndrome'. That's the most disappointing part of the season for me. They have the talent, but they do need direction and Jose just doesn't look interested. The thought of what they could become for us, and that Jose might just be wasting all their talent, upsets me.

Gone through phases. Missed the first 3 games cos of hols but we seemed to be playing well/OK. Leicester was a great result and made me very hopeful but as Mou said, the result was better than the performance. Then we went through a period of the opposite - the overall performances were better than the results, but we ended up with almost 2 months of poor results.

Then we seemed to be consolidating and then back to draws. Recently, I think we've been let down by those responsible for the goals - especially the midfield in the sense that in the past players like Scholes, Butt, O'Shea and even Carrick used to be good for a few, in fact you could count on to 10+ from Scholes, and there's no reason for our present squad members not to be contributing goals ! Inconsistency has been a major problem.

The final judgement will be at the end of the season. No CL will be a failure given that we're one of the better teams in the EL and the number of times we've been on the verge of 3rd/4th spot.

If any of you were alive for lvG, then you'd not say d.

We make forward passes now. That al9ne makes it better

I was pleased with the style of football but we've fallen off a cliff since January in that respect. The poor finishing just makes it all the more annoying.

Was happy with our football despite our football till around Jan. It's slowly gone to LvG levels of shit since then and it's rather difficult to watch us right now.

Not enough options in OP.

Ignoring results, we've played far more good looking games of football than in any of the last few years. Although there's also been a bunch of games where we've reverted to type and put in some classic, post-Fergie shit shows.

Taking results into account it's been an overall massive disappointment. But hey, we're all adults and should be able to judge performances independent of results. Looking at performances alone, we're clearly going in the right direction. Just need to turn a bunch of those draws into wins. Which isn't a huge ask.

So yeah, basically e)boue.

Your daft. We were rocking along nicely until fatigue set in. Next season with squad players upgraded to top class.

I'm satisfied. We've been a bit of form recently but generally we're moving into a right direction. We're actually trying to score a goal and make forward passes although we do have difficulties with.. scoring goals. :)

Overall I think a basis for a good if not great next season is here and with few more good signings, on which Jose is surely working on or maybe some are already in place, we'll look good next season.
This season although not very good overall still can end with a trophy, and a European one to that, and maybe with even top 4 finish too.

There will be a busy summer, new signings and players going out, we'll have a different team next season.

Something is happening, although slowly..

In any case Jose must make it right next season. One more hard fight for top 4 next season won't look good.

I was happy/pleased until 2017 came about. Think we've been poor since the new year.

But before that, I thought we were playing our best football in years(which maybe isn't saying much, but I think we played well for a period).

Still better than Van Gaal's football though imo.

C) Definetely isn't as boresom watching.
Everything might still be shambolics at times, but you just can't deny that last season made most people actually turn off games, because they were incredibly dull.

Not really, it's C for me. I think the system is getting there, we play more attacking football, although it seems to have regressed lately. Some say fatigue (despite plenty of games, only Ibra/Pogba/Valencia have played nearly all though), but I think it's more being figured out and not having enough quality to do anything about that.

So yeah, I think it's mostly the quality of the players. That our left side is basically 'winging' it (heheh) and not good enough is a major issue in our attack. Right wing isn't much better. That's 2/3 of attack that isn't good enough, before we even get to midfield.

The intensity needs to be stepped up.
There's some fire missing too, possibly linked. I don't know if that's Jose's demeanour transferring to the players, the tactics, or just the players themselves.

I hope Jose still wants to do everything to succeed here, as I think he's the right man.

We've improved a lot but I'm still jaded enough to not believe in clean sheets, comeback wins, late goals and three points at home.

If we win the E.L in Jose first season then it will be just fine, because we are not getting top four IMO. Playing style is better than the last season w create many chances and play attacking football but converting these chances into goals is the main problem that's why I put that on players shoulders not the manager. If we continue like that the next season with some good additions then we can talk.

It is not d) because we have not been shit.

We have disappointed on many occasions and his buys have under performed. so one could argue he suffers, like LVG, in getting players to play his way.

I am more disappointed at the number of players that have gone backwards, e.g. Martial, Rashford, Smalling, and the lack of game time for any youth (which was the main reason for me not wanting Jose).

We could end up having won 2 cups and sneaking top 4, but I still couldn't put my hand on my heart and say we have been a joy to watch. I have to admit that I expected a team which missed out on 4th through goal difference, and having won the FA cup, and spent 150M to have done a lot better. Especially when we knew Leicester were obviously going to drop out of the top 4, City and Arsenal have had little change to make significant improvement, Spurs are Spurs, and Chelsea and Liverpool seemed in trouble.

Nothing is as bad as last season. But we're still pretty crap. Slow football, lazy over-reliance on bad crosses, shit set pieces, and poor finishing. C-, must do better.
