Only two countries have won the World Cup back to back.

- Italy in 1943 and 1938
- Brazil in 1958 and 1962

Argentina won in 1986 lost the next world cup final.

West Germany came runners up in 1982, 1986 and won in 1990.

France won in 2018 and failed to beat Argentina at the last World Cup.

I don't see them winning it back to back. I think Spain and France have better squads. I have a sneaky feeling Portugal could be a dark horse.

Of course Messi winning a second world cup will be the story.

I think Scaloni doesn’t get enough credit/respect as a top manager, that Argentina team is good but not exactly the greatest squad ever yet he’s won 2 Copa Americas and a World Cup after a long drought, really got the best out of Messi too. The football they play is great to watch too. South American qualifying they win it by 9 points. Yet I’ve seen some people not name them as contenders. It’s always hard to defend, and a lot of teams lack the hunger the next time, but it will be interesting if Scaloni can pull another one off.

Also interested to see if they can integrate Paz to give them something fresh for this one.

He's only ever managed Argentina and I guess our media isn't too interested in covering him! That's a fair point, though! He is a world cup winning manager after all.

They have gone under the radar being talked about as favourites. I do think Spain and France have the best squads. It would be interesting if France got to the final again, that would be three times in a row!

I'm not sure if Paz would play much, I think Scaloni would find it very hard to play him instead of Messi

Teams a bit older now, they'll miss Di Maria's input I think too, I don't expect them to go beyond the quarter finals this time

If Messi was 4 years younger, I'd probably pick them to repeat.

But I'm not sure this current iteration of Messi will have that much of an impact despite his fine form recently. Not sure he can stay injury free too. That long career is starting to catch up to him slowly. Niggling injuries here and there.

Then again, I thought they had no shot winning in 2022 after that opening game.

Agreed. That's why I think Spain and France have the upper hand in terms of age of the squad with talented players. Portugal have a great team also but I'm not sure if Martinez will handle Ronaldo properly. He's probably afraid to upset Ronaldo.

I don't think they are complete underdogs. If they build some momentum it's possible!

Do you think dropping Messi if it had to come to it, that Scaloni would do it? I can imagine he'd be afraid to do it because Messi could do nothing all game then just create this amazing pass from anywhere. Messi is still capable of creating something amazing but he's not the player he was 4 years ago.

Not only have very few teams successfully defended the trophy (well, two), but I was listening to Tim Vickery on the radio the other day, and he pointed out something that I hadn't even considered; no country has ever defended the title in another continent - Italy did it in France and Brazil did it in Chile.

For Argentina to go back to back, you're asking them to win 2 World Cups outside of South America, and also to win the Copa America, then the World Cup, then the Copa America, then the World Cup again. Needless to say, this has never happened and must be close to Impossible.

On top of that, Messi is 39 and very close to the stage when the team might be better without him (he's not as far gone as Ronaldo in that sense, but he's getting there).

I'd be shocked if they win it again, frankly. But you just can't rule anything out with this tournament.

Scaloni and Messi should be open to it. You can always be ready to bring an older, incredibly skilled player off the bench if need be. It's gonna be hot, they can bring on Messi and 2 players to make runs in behind in the 70th minute of an open game, or Messi to help break down a team sitting deep by getting on the ball, or just attracting a ton of attention and making it a bit easier on the Argentina left-side as the opposing midfield maybe shades a bit towards Messi.

Same for Cristiano and Portugal. No shame in being close to or over 40 and joining guys like Gianni Rivera, Roger Milla and Fabregas as world cup sub greats.

I genuinely think England might have won something by now if they'd been more open to making the odd star player a sub (Gerrard coming on 60 minutes into a knockout game against a tiring midfield? Sounds useful!). Knockout/cup football is weird that way.

Time will tell!

The squad isn't announced yet. Scaloni has hinted ''it will be painful for some guys'', so we can expect a few big names being left out.

Will Scaloni stay on after this world cup? He's done an exceptional job with Argentina but you'd think he might want to try his hand at club level some day? Won all there is to win.

His contract is up after this World Cup. He has only managed for his country.

Kind of hard to think about what club he'd go to. To make a transition from only managing a country without club experience, I'd say he'd have to go for a mid level club rather than the elite teams, which could be strange as he's literally won the most prestigious prize in football!!

Yeah, it would be interesting to see where he ended up if he chose to go that way. Alas, he should just either extend/renew or retire.

Club football ain't worth the grey hairs

Exactly! ha

Some managers are just better at managing International teams. They still have to work but it's a far less exhausting schedule than club football! Two bad results and a poor month almost puts an elite clubs manager under scrutiny whereas in Internationals, a bad period is talked about for a week before the club games are back and they are left alone for 6 months! It's only when the end of qualifiers/tournaments are over the manager is under scrutiny.

In general it's not a bad thing at all.

Players like Romero, Lautaro or Emiliano Martinez arrive mature, yet not old for their roles and with tons of experience.

Many are still young with their best years to come: Enzo, Alvarez, Lisandro, Mac Allister.

The real ord guard like De Paul, Paredes and Messi are the ones that their age it's a question, but at the same time, all pretty aware of that in order to be as fit as possible for the WC as a last Hurrah. Di Maria BTW given his current form and fitness, should have not retired, silly from him to not wait till now to decide.

The main issue on all of them, is fitness, way too many injury prone players these last years and Mac Allister form has been really bad too. If all of them are fit and give their all and recover form in some cases, age it's not a worryng thing.

On the other hand, what it's really worrying is:

. The lack of Top dribblers.
. The lack of proper fullbacks
. That our strikers are more all around forwards, yet not clinical finishers
. That Scaloni didn't try enough new players and mostly precisly because his core is still young, but I think that was a mistake.

At least for current times, if we keep fit the CBs and the kepper, we have lots of options in the mid to keep posession and hustle, but we might be hurt on our flanks or lacking finsishing. On form is a proper team on paper.

Back to the lack of real Top dribblers it's sthg that I hated with Bielsa for not using them properly and now we just have those retired (Di Maria), too old (Messi) and with a bad season when he had to actually became better (Almada). There is only a kiddo in the Pre List that has been showing some proper dribbling and all around game so far, yet a kid with just a couple of games: Aranda from boca, that might not make the final list and if he goes.

As a posible positive, I really like the crop of new Mids like Paz, Barco, even that kid Perrone is quite tidy. Also that new kepper from River, Beltrán, looks promising as hell. So I want at least these three to make the cut (maybe only Paz would make it, sadly) and with luck even playing, yet the two fellas here, are midfielders and that area has already to many proven optiones. What I like of these two kids, it's that they have at least some great level of dribbling and control to create some space out of nowwhere, even if they are not classic pacey ones.

I don't fancy Nico Gonzalez, Giuliano, yet I get that their stamina, obedient character might get useful even as wingbacks for the lack of proper fullbacks, since Taglifaico is quite old and Molina can't recover his Udinese form since years with a glimpse here and there.

PD: from the oldies, Dybala should have go, as made of crystal as he is, too much quality and just recoverd and in form.

I agree, was enough to win the last one after a Copa America that was quite a curse for ages, this might be way too much stadistics to overcome.

Messi prior to these last week injury, was really fit, extremely in fact. I hope it's just a knock. On form there is no way he would be sit, less witha team that knows how to use him

As a side note, being the Argie NT manager is quite a ride, the level of abuse Scaloni had to deal with was Maguire/Higuain alike.

Very true!

The previous Copa America I watched a decent amount of matches with a mate of mine who lives South American football. I've watched a little bit of SA football but I don't watch it religiously.

It's so different compared to Europe. The humidity is much higher over there, the pitches aren't as good and they kill each other! In an intense SA game, there could be at least two red cards in a European match. Referees let a lot more go. They also rarely kick off on time whereas in Europe, it's very strange for the match to kick off late. I remember during that Copa America, the Brazil manager at the time (Can't even remember the name), was treated as a villain to the nation. So much intense pressure where it almost felt like he was at risk of being started on!

So that's a very good point you made.

That's sthg that at times makes me smile when people goes to the extreme with the whole toughness of the EPL, more than that, it's the intensity many teams are going for the win what's makes it a League where players have to adapt to almost every game be a a less tactical frantic one.

In many ways Arsenal played against that tide, trying to be as cunning as intense as possible (yet not frantic at all), trying to not let anyone see any sort of crack in order to hurt them.

    My prefferences:

  • KEEPERS: I would have liked Beltran with the keepers, the kid looks promising, would have been great to have him there at times it helps to actually launch and "create" a carreer to have such exprience at a very young age.
I get it they couldn't rule out Rulli being with them for so long.
  • DEFENDERS: Among the defenders, I don't get not calling Senesi, I really don't. Hoping having Romero and Lisandro as the CB pairing, yet both to injury prone, crossing fingers.
  • MIDFIELDERS: Happy to see Barco there, hoping he adds some fresh blood if he gest his chance. Not that fond of having Lo Celso right now, in any case, Dybala is better and even little Buendia had a great season too. I don't have a clue how Palacios is doing this days, hoping for Barco and Paz to play at least sthg and that Macca get his act right asap.
  • FORWARDS: Messi still in forwards always amuses me. Not fond of Nico G or Giuliano, thought both are tireless pacey annoying feckers. Paz I like him more in the midfield, hope he plays at least more or less regularly. Lopez deserved it, I guess Panichelli woudl have gotten his place. THE LACK of true young dribblers it's truloly worrying, too much passing there, Almada betetr get his act together like Mac Allister. Messi can't still be the most in form dribbler of the team, even being Messi.
  • Scaloni has to pray that no big injuries happen, only in the mids he is trully covered.

I don’t understand Lo Celso getting called. Or Balerdi.

Would have loved to see Senesi, Perrone getting called. Soule is another player that is doing really well but we have Nico Paz in that place

I’m glad Barco is on the squad, and also Lopez.

No chance mi amigos.
The soccer gods granted on cup to sir messi as a thank you.

There are two many estadistics against it, some players with a serious lack of form, yet the first 11 can still do a great WC. Anyway, to many history to knock down, would be too much, yet...

I see Simeone being a key player and his link up play with Alvarez all season was fun to watch and will cause defenses lots of problems.

Surprised not to see Marco Senesi there given the year he's had the Bournemouth - could arguably start alongside Romero on form.

Interested to see what the midfield setup looks like as presumably you'd want to start Enzo, Mac Allister and Paz which is quite attacking? Guessing Simeone will largely be coming off the bench as well with Messi still starting off the right?

9 players over 30 in the squad and two 38 year olds (one will turn 39 during the tournament). Not recipe for winning a long, gruelling World Cup in the heat.

Again, I think there are so many factors against them winning it this time, but stranger things have happened.

Senesi deserved to go, IMO. Probably been more consistent (and available) and better than both Romero and Martinez in the PL the past 2 years. Otamendi still there as well, bloody hell. (maybe he's been good at Benfica, albeit old as hell and probably going for his experience?)

Licha will have a good WC. For reason I keep thinking we're going to get an Arg v Brasil final

Senesi is comfortably behind both Romero and Martinez. If both are fit, they're going to play as starters over Otamendi aswell. Otamendi has been doing good at Benfica, but it's a 2nd tier league.

Senesi was called for the last FIFA friendlies window, at which Argentina played some crap team like Mauritania, I don't remember. And he did really bad there. Maybe that got him out.

From what I've read, the fight for a place in the squad was between him and Jose Lopez. And they decided to bring the striker.

Balerdi has been terrible in France, I don't know how he's been called over Senesi anyways.

Messi will be player of the tournament, he's just that good, even at 50.

Thanks for the context. Yeah, individually he's not better than Romero or Lisandro when on form, but he's been more consistent than them IMO. Would have been a good squad option in case of injuries etc.

Yeah but Scaloni preferred both Leonardo Balerdi and Facundo Medina over him. They've been worse than Senesi but they've been called more times for the NT. I during KO stages Cuti & Licha will be the starters anyway.

What I don't understand is how Lo Celso has been called as he has been injured most of the time and played like 9 games. I would have loved having Perrone instad of him. Or instead of Exequiel Palacios who is always called but rarely plays.

I bet he will start for Argentina in 2030.

Looks talented. How far is that Real Madrid fella from the NT - Mastantuono or something?

Well he was close but was left out as he's been poor at Madrid. They're going to loan him for sure.
