What happened this season is what most people thought could've easily happened in his first season.
Liverpool fans, as always, can't just be happy with enjoying that surprise title for what it was. It had to be the start of their next era of total domination, especially when they 'won' the transfer window by paying 125 million for a player they did not need, just because they'd illegally tapped the shit out of him and knew they'd be in serious bother if they didn't go through with it.
As we've learned, no matter how excited you get about the new manager coming in, most of them turn out to be mediocre at best.

I imagine that he will go at the end of the season. I'd like to see us go for Alonso, based mainly on the playing personnel that we still have at the club. The wing-back system he implemented at BL would work well with our defense, also allowing VVD to prolong his career, similar to what Chelsea did whilst Thiago was there. It would also help solve the 'life without Salah' issue and make the most of our abundance of central attacking talent.

I use to live in Manchester and work in Liverpool, is how close they are.
We finished 7th in moyes' season in charge, on 64 points.
With 2 games to go, slot is 4th on 59 points.

I think both can be true. The general quality of midtable teams has improved a lot, largely thanks to the money in the Premier League. The top sides, however, are not as strong as previous years.
That's probably fair and also likely a discussion for another thread. I struggle to find a good reference point. Do top teams look worse because the midtable teams improved so much? CL probably a decent reference system

Definitely for another thread but yeah, you're point is true - one fact feeds into another. Clubs like Man Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham have struggled in lower midtable over the past few years. With Liverpool, however, it's actually nothing new - they have consistently yoyoed between champions elect and struggling to qualify for the Champions League, even in Klopp's era.
It's definitely this. That gap has been closed, think the bigger teams have regressed and the midtable teams have got better. Before I'd argue there wasnt much between the lower half of the premier league and top half of the championship, now 3rd or 4th will struggle against 14th or 15th in the league, especially away from home.
I'd say all teams can hold onto top players for longer, especially now that up to five or even six teams can offer Champions League football as well as high salaries. Back in the day United could snatch Van Persie from Arsenal. I don't think City/Arsenal could take, say, Bruno Fernandes from United or Szoboszlai from Liverpool, for example. Even when top teams aim for mid table players they have to pay extortionate fees like Chelsea did for Caicedo, or Arsenal for Rice. That naturally makes it harder to build a team that stands out if you're not complelety lucky and all the stars align (or you cheat your way to the top like City and add a generational manager into the mix).
Yeah, it does make perfect sense now that I know the info. But at first it felt like, no way.
The other factor is that the rising intensity of the PL game plus the expansion of the European schedule means that the midtable teams have an even bigger advantage than before in terms of playing fewer fixtures and getting more rest.
English teams are going far in most European competitions now and that means 12-15 extra matches. Add in some projected extra matches in the domestic cups compared to the average midtable side and its now very common for PL teams in Europe to be playing 60 matches per year while other PL teams not in Europe play 40-45.
While teams in Europe have always played more, the difference is not just greater now but its more meanginful because the PL matches have become running contests. It wasn't such an issue to be slightly jaded back when low to mid table PL opponents would simply park the bus and try to hit you on the counter or a set piece. Now they try to press you all over the pitch, run through you in midfield, and generally take advantage of having more energy.
