Arne Slot | ex-Liverpool manager | The Bald sack watch is over

Quod non.

We had an amazing manager but most sensible fans have always maintained that FSG aren't savvy ownership but rather got lucky with his appointment. It's definitely no surprise that they've failed to act in any way whatsoever this season.

It was rather Utd fans on here that constantly referred to FSG as the golden standard for ownership when they were complaining about the Glazers, which never was true to begin with.
No they didn't. Most of them were adamant the good times were going to roll on post Klopp and hailing Edwards as some kind of savant, which was a thing that was going on long before Klopp left too.

So they put their faith in Edwards then, which still isn't ownership.

Edwards is not a separate entity to the ownership like someone like Klopp is. Nobody had even heard of the guy before his role with FSG. And there was plenty of bs talked last year after Slot won the title about how great the structure at Liverpool was and anecdotes about how Klopp was overruled on Brandt so they could sign Salah by the shrewd higher ups. Naturally that's all gone now that the Klopp factor is gone but it was absolutely happening and commonplace.

That does definitely not mean that he's suddenly ownership level, I think he wishes that he was  He's the "CEO of football" or whatever they call it and he reports to the ownership, just like any other executive role.

By Liverpool and rival fans alike.

Fair enough, I already referred to my own posts in 2022 stating a few times that FSG weren't anything special. I do still believe that our front office - the actual footballing decision makers - are capable enough and that we largely recruited well last summer. It's obviously easy and might seem like a cop out to put all the blame on Slot's shoulders for how this season went; there are likely multiple factors but the one thing you cannot deny is that we became worse and worse as the season progressed and that apart from maybe 1 or 2 players, all of our players collectively underperformed this season. That's too much of a coincidence for me not to be, at least in majority if not solely, the manager's fault.

I guess (or I hope) that we will find out soon enough whether I'm right or wrong to put the blame on Slot when he's eventually replaced.

I only see twitter rumors from questionable sources, nothing very reliable.

Sacking him now after letting Alonso go to Chelsea and the team did secure a CL place (almost certainly) would make the higher ups look like idiots.

He's going. There are a few reports the last few hours but after the season they just had/the stuff with Salah/ and in particular the booing at Anfield in that Chelsea game, there's zero chance he'll be there next season

That is already accomplished

If they sack slot after not trying for Alonso its insane. Ireola will be their best bet

I guess its possible they decided that the prefer Iraola to Alonso and therefore could wait. But I think that's a hard sell to the supporters.

If Iraola does goes go to Liverpool it'll also be quite the story due the longstanding friendship and connection with Arteta and Alonso. They all played together for the same small U10 side in San Sebastian and now possibly managing three massive PL rivals.

I think if Liverpool get rid of a few of the disturbing forces in the dressing room and hire 2-3 good players, Klopp will have them top 2-3 next season, possibly competing for the title. Except for this season, Slot has impressed me with every season he had since his AZ days.

Who are these disturbing forces?

I'll be worried if Iraola goes there. Players and fans will be primed for an aggressive press after this season and his teams are fit and play good stuff.

He's obviously a really smart manager. The way his teams press and their coordination when breaking in transition is fantastic.

I do think it will be a big change not just in terms of the size of the club but to manage a club that will dominate possession and is in CL so can't rely so much on playing such a high intensity off ball game in the PL.

But given what he showed in figuring out how to get Bournemouth into this position and to sustain their play despite selling so many players, I wouldn't bet against him figuring out how to adapt his tactics for Liverpool.

So Iraola was discussed by fans and the pundits and was brushed off for not having managed a big club etc and Carrick would be the choice over him. I will be happy to be proven wrong, but if Iraola goes to Liverpool, they will go on another winning run.

They might do but there's zero guarnatee of that. Moyes and Frank are prime examples of this within the PL moving on to clubs with much bigger expectations and falling spectacualarly

He's a good manager but there are genuine risks for Liverpool. Firstly, he's never managed egos. Second, never managed under serious scrutiny. And third, his style of football is mega intense pressing. Is Liverpool's new post-Klopp squad suited to that? Would they buy in?

How big an ego could the likes of Gakpo and Kerkez have though? I don’t think they have many egos left once Monaldo leaves and stops caring about only himself.

The likes of Van Dijk and Szob have continued to try and win games even after Slot lost their confidence.

Fair. I just can't see Wirtz, Isak chasing relentlessly. Even if they want to they're not built for it. The loss or decline of vvd, salah, alisson, robertson will also have a big impact on a lack of leadership and experience. I could see Iraola building a new younger hungry team but that could take 2 or 3 seasons, and patience might be thin if it doesn't start well. We'll see.

It’s possible, but I think they have been quite professional, for the most part, in the face of someone who clearly doesn’t really know what he is doing/building.

I think they will buy in to a coach who has clear ideas and is coming off the back of a really exciting few years at Bournemouth with much lesser players. I can see them responding immediately unfortunately; and can see the same at Chelsea.

Carrick simply has to work now.

Heard an interesting point made on a pod the other day, where they said Liverpool and City are likely to cycle through a few managers over the next 5 or 6 seasons. Effectively, they’ve had unicorn managers and it’s bloody hard to find another one.

For what it’s worth, I really like Iraola, think he’s done a terrific job at Bournemouth. He’s not without risk, given he’s not managed an elite club yet, but it goes with saying that if he takes over at Anfield he’s instantly a c**t and I hope he fails miserably.

Really hope this doesn't happen

I hope they stick with Slot and this isn’t true.

In fairness to Ineos I can’t imagine some of our players (Shaw, Maguire, De Ligt, Martinez, possibly Cunha) fitting in with the intensity he requires his teams to play at. He would have needed a lot of backing, patience and the support of the players to get us to play at that intensity and I just couldn’t see it happening. It would have been a risk.

Maybe those Salah comments and general mood amongst players is why they feel Slot should be sacked after all. Far from disaster season as they'll at least qualify for CL, but relations with players and tactics haven't been great so it's not even about results.

Iraola seems like a logical solution given options. Wonder what's with Fabregas? Maybe he'll stay at Como for another season before going to bigger side.

It was never about the results per se.

“Congratulations Arsenal. You’re kind of crap though because 40% of your goals came from set pieces. But no, really, well done”

All those players apart from Cunha need to be phased out next season due to the fact they are either constantly injured or way past their prime.

The job for the boys mentality than runs through our club is exactly what keeps holding us back.

Defending Ineos's decision to not choose a manager who plays with intensity because it does not suite the likes of Maguire and Shaw is baffling.

Iraola to Liverpool would make me sick, It's like we never learn from previous mistakes.
