Arsenal 2026/27

Absolutely, every transfer the player gives his word to multiple clubs, switches his destination every hour giving no informations of his whereabouts while his uncle negotiate the biggest commission he can get for himself. Even Odemwinge had more etiquette.
You're taking offense at this one because he ultimately didn't go to Arsenal and are trying to make yourself feel better about what would have been a pretty decent deal. Which is fine.

It's a bit unorthodox but not exactly unheard of, particularly on transfer deadline day, especially for a player being pushed out of a club that absolutely needs funds (it's unlikely he would have left if Lyon had secured CL qualification).

We could probably have used Fofana. I dont know why we didn't secure another top signing early on in the window. Instead, we started watching potential targets being picked up one by one while we are being linked with every luxury player out there. I know Berta can walk and chew gum, but that was terrible.

It was for me the clearest of transfer windows. He had done such a great job the previous summer. We needed to (probably) overspend on a forward/LW. All other was secondary. Instead, we likely got weaker. We are going to miss Trossard and be forced to panic buy scraps after Xmas.

What a really weird summer.

Attack was their major weakness, and you can argue they've somehow weakened their attacking options by letting go of Jesus, Martinelli and Trossard and replacing them with just one player in Tzolis?

They'll still win the league as teams find it impossible to score against them and it's incredibly annoying and boring. But still, a very strange window.

Almost every single transfer Arsenal were linked with were accompanied with the words 'Arsenal have their own valuation of the player and will not go above that valuation', so it seems like they were very eager to stress they wouldn't deviate from their plan. I think they ended up going slightly above it with Bruno G but they seemingly walked away from a few deals based on principle. Or it's all just a big PR game to protect themselves if the player decides to go elsewhere.

Felt very United-Woodwardesque in that regard, it must be said.

It's not a bad transfer window, but a bit of an odd one in that you've probably weakened the area you needed to reinforce most.

Normally, I'd say there's much to admire about it. But if you try and be too clever, like Berta supposedly was trying to be regarding Rogers, and then the market blows up like it did after the Anderson transfer especially, then you end up just missing out on your main targets. It's not like transfer fees ever really go down. Do we think we'd get a free run and a reasonable fee for someone like a Kroupi Jr in the future, certainly not. He'll be another 1 we miss out on.

I'm glad we have Rogers, but you can't be down on Berta for walking away from that deal. It's a stupid fee. But yeah, unless you find a proper hidden gem somewhere in Europe, if you're shopping in the prem for attacking upgrades, you're gonna have to pay premium prices.

I think the criticism comes from the fact that apparently we could have got the deal done for £80M - £90M if we done it earlier in the summer.

But Berta was hoping that by stalling, & spinning plates, that fee would go down. Instead, the Anderson fee set a new benchmark for clubs, we baulked at the price, which allowed you guys to come in strong and agree to the fee Villa wanted.

When you see Arteta's quotes after the Champions League Final, "We will have to start making some very important decisions if we want to reach another level. We are going to have to show that ambition because we are more than capable of doing it, but it is going to demand us to be very ambitious, very fast and very smart."

Certainly not what was executed in the attack.

I think most (sensible) Arsenal fans aren't annoyed about walking away at £117m. It's the fact that he was our number 1 target and we didn't wrap it up weeks earlier for significantly less that rankles.

Yeah fair point chaps.

I’m no fan of Berta but the timeline of this doesn’t really add up to me. There were stories all over the media that Forest wanted 120m for Anderson before the window even opened. I’m sure Arsenal and, even more importantly, Villa would have even more inside info on the state of that deal. So I don’t understand when this magic window existed that we could have bought Rogers for 80m.

I remember various reports at he time was that it would take somewhere between £80M - £90M to bring Villa to the table. Of course there are stories about what Forest want, but a lot of the time that ends up being negotiated down, so not sure if Villa had any insight of what the final fee would be. Once that was established, they had a baseline to work from. I don't think it's any coincidence that Anderson went for £116M, & then Rogers went for £117M.

I assume you seen the Hand of Arsenal tweet from last night? I don't know if that guy has any insight at all, but just from the snippets we have been hearing about Berta operates, about the 'spinning plates', about the way he negotiated Gyokeres, how he negotiated Bruno G, dropping the ball with Monga even, i think most of the stuff he was saying seems perfectly plausible to me.

There were a limited amount of players available that could fill our deficiencies and instead of pursuing them aggressively we spent time in the wrong areas in my opinion. Finding a Konsa, and probably a much cheaper option, was fairly easily done. Finding the right attacker...not so easy. We should have bought upfront first, it was as clear as day for me, which is why I was negative on the Konsa and Guimaraes transfers. I saw them as nice to have, not prerequisites. We could easily have bought a 15 to 20 mil defender at the end of the last day.

We let every main option go by, and didnt want to splurge at the end, presumably because we felt we didnt want to overpay or simply could not afford it anymore, or both. Berta and Arteta really arsed this up. Our attack is hanging on hopes rather than expectations. It breaks our consecutive streak of good transfer windows. This one is incomplete...and the weird thing is that this was the easiest one.

Feels like a missed opportunity for Arsenal. They're no worse overall, but they seem to have doubled down on midfield and defensive heft while arguably going backwards in attack. I really thought they'd be going for an elite (or potentially elite) attacker in the window.

I'm personally pleased he's back but honestly they should've just signed Rashford once it became clear that Vini Jr wasn't happening.

We probably both would've been in a better position right now.

Agreed. There is no way Villa would have sold for 80m or even 100m for that matter, surely not in June anyway. Almost like saying Newcastle would sell BrunoG for 50m-60m.

Although In case of Anderson, Forest asking 120m doesn't mean someone is stupid enough to pay 120m or even 116m (in this case).
Sometimes it's just posturing. Newcastle started with 100m+ for BrunoG after they sold Tonali but we got him for 75m in the end.
But that was possible as BrunoG was sold on Arsenal project and there was only one realistic buyer. Even then it dragged for over a month for Newcastle to soften their stance.

For Rogers to move for 100-105m needed just 1 buyer and strong push from the player. Anderson deal made Villas stance stronger but even without that they had no reason to do a deal in June for less than Wirtz money.
Why would Villa sell for less when Enzo/Caicedo/Wirtz are going for 110+ unless they have to and there is a single buyer situation.

Having said that Bertas spinning plate approach is surely not suitable for a team like Arsenal. And I have serious doubts about anyone who pushes a club hard to buy Gyok (Strike1) or someone why prides in not paying obscene fees then pays 52m for Noni (Strike2) and his underhand movements with Kia for MLS sale(Strike3).

He should be on a very short leash and under pressure.

But it shouldn't be an either or scenario. There was money there to do Vini Jr or Alvarez deals should we have managed to pull either off. And it wasn't due to lack of time being distracted by the Konsa or Bruno G deals, as we spent lots of time on the afore mentioned players we didn't land.

I just think the club has valuations on players, that they are willing to negotiate, but not willing to go mental for like in the case of Rogers or Barcola, and if you go onto their threads in here, not many would want to pay that money either.

Strange window from Arsenal. Signed some good players but in areas they were already strong.

Feels like a missed opportunity.

If this goes tits up, as it's quite likely to, he'll be the first one to get the boot.

I don't think it is too hard to bring in someone to play on the left so that we can restore the balance of the attack. Most of our attacks is from the right and everyone knows it. In this past transfer window Gordon, Rogers, Godts, Fofana, Paixao were all available in the market.

Yep, no one’s disagreeing with you about want Forest wanted. But until City actually paid it, that had no effect on the market.

While it was difficult to predict how mad the market ended up becoming, Berta should have seen that delaying would up the price. City have a functionally limitless budget, so an inflated market suits them. Not just with hindsight, our dithering didn’t help us at all in ways that were easily foreseen.

To be fair, of that list on Godts is someone I would have liked us to sign for the fee they were sold for. And even then, only in the ‘Tzolis’ role of (hopefully) being a rotation to a top-level signing.

The weird thing about the discourse around the Elliot Anderson fee destroying the market - Anderson's fee is completely in line with the fees of Enzo, Caicedo, Rice. Those fees were also 3 years ago and you'd expect the prices will only be going up. He was always going for £100m at an absolute minimum, I can't believe so many people are shocked by the fee.

Enzo, Caicedo and Rice were all more proven. I also think they're better players, but's more subjective. Anderson has had one good PL season.

A guaranteed £60m for Martinelli plus sell-on fee. He had 12 months left on his contract and it was made public he was no longer wanted. Why are other clubs finding it so easy to get exceptional fees for their players but we get zilch? I get the wages point, but there does seem to be something we’re missing here.

I presume martinelli earned low on wages at arsenal. Also he did perform reasonably well and can be a superstar in middle east league.

I think it’s because clubs know that we are desperate to get rid of players. Martinelli is a good player and Arsenal probably didn’t mind if he ended up staying.

With Ugarte, Zirkzee, Antony, Sancho etc, clubs know that we are desperate to get them out the door and are in a weak position to negotiate large fees

I am not sure if 180k/week is considered low wages in EPL or in Europe.

Reading Martinelli's Instagram post I can't help but be sad at the way he's leaving. As nice as it has been to become one of the better teams in the country/Europe I don't really like the club we've become. I think I preferred being honourable losers

He had 12 months left and a 12 month option, essentially 2 years. The best offer we got from Europe was apparently from Turkey at €45M. Without the Saudi interest we'd have struggled to sell him as well.

It’s been reported that the option had to agreed by both parties. So it may not have been quite as simple as being essentially two years.

However, I agree that had Saudi not come calling, we wouldn’t have sold for anywhere near £60m.

Interesting article on BBC about Arsenals summer transfers.

Also this comment about Sesko

"...For example, last summer, when all the scouting information pointed towards a move for Benjamin Sesko, Berta's arrival meant the club pivoted to Viktor Gyokeres, who is currently second-choice striker....'

Apparently Berta doesn't always listen to the scouting at Arsenal preferring to use his own network of connections. Also uses intermediaries for talks which meant they lost out on Monga, who joined City.

Obviously Arsenal won’t win the league this season, the so called experts on the BBC have picked them, it’s very hard to overcome that handicap.
They picked Liverpool last year.

I think City and possibly Chelsea will run them close to the end of the season.

We’re just a different team offensively when Havertz and Odegaard are healthy, which was hardly ever the case the last 18 months.

I think we’ll win the league fairly comfortably if they stay fit but it’ll be a dogfight with City and maybe Chelsea if they struggle with injuries again.

Really interesting stat on the PL app. They’re actually bottom for shots inside the box (3). It doesn’t feel like that watching them play. Maybe that’s not accurate?

Is your squad as good as everyone says it is in terms of depth? Defensively yes but some of your back up options certainly aren’t as reliable as the starters (Gyokeres, Merino, Zubimendi has dropped off, Eze has been disappointing, Madueke).

They played us off the park second half. They can play good football when they want. Seems Arteta prefers control and risk averse football, which puts everyone to sleep but sometimes they show glimpses of playing good football. They were great today.

Saka and Odegaard were brilliant today. Feels like the World Cup has revitalised both. Again insane tactics from Tuchel not to give Saka a single minute against Argentina.

O.k Arsenal didn't find that marquee attacking signing to push them on further in CL but improving Havertz, Saka and Odegaard is a forward line more than good enough to retain the premier league imo.
