Ferguson has funds to sign new striker and goalkeeper
By Harry Harris, Soccernet Football Correspondent

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has funds - Barclays Premier League - ESPN Soccernet

Sir Alex Ferguson will be allowed to spend up to £80 million this summer as he targets a new striker and goalkeeper.

Ferguson has been reluctant to spend big money and has said in recent months that he feels there is a lack of value in the market, but he now acknowledges that Manchester United cannot continue to rely so heavily on Wayne Rooney and will look to bring in a new forward when the transfer window reopens. Edwin van der Sar recently agreed a one-year contract extension to remain at Old Trafford next season but, at 39, his time at the top level looks limited, so Ferguson would like to bring in one of the world's top goalkeepers to replace him.

United raised £80 million from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in the summer but reinvestment in the market was limited and there were suspicions that the Glazers were using the remaining funds elsewhere in the business. However, it has emerged that the cash pile is still available for new signings.

An insider told Soccernet: "There is no doubt that the money from the sale of Ronaldo is there for Sir Alex to spend, and any other money he raises through sales. Sir Alex needs a striker and a goalkeeper, and the players of the quality United demand means that they would be extremely expensive and, while Sir Alex likes value for money, he does need these two players for next season as a matter of priority."

Ferguson has been left to deal with team matters without any interference from the Glazers, and for that reason he is supportive of their ownership of the club and unwilling to go behind their backs to back the Red Knights' potential takeover.

"Sir Alex is not involved with the Red Knights, nor would he be," the insider added. "It's preposterous to even suggest it. In any case, their bid is not reality.

"No one is going to force the Glazers to sell, and I would doubt whether the Glazers would even entertain these guys, even if they did change their minds one day. There seems to be no proof of funds - the likelihood is that they would borrow heavily in any case - so what is the difference?"

A striker and a GK... the exact 2 positions we DON'T need. Pretty useless "insider".

Just read this too. Seems to just be the same thing we've been hearing since Ronaldo was sold. The money is allegedly there to spend, so we shall see come the summer. Although I get the feeling some of this has a bit to do with PIG claiming he doesn't know how much longer he can sit on the bench rather than any real information.

Boring.

I hate to break it to the muppets but United will most likely sign another defender and maybe a couple of youth prospects from abroad.

No big signings and quite possibly a few sales.

Striker and Keeper sounds about right. Can't see us retaining Owen, and the likes of Kiko, Welbeck, and Diouf are not quite ready yet. VdS is 40 and unlikely to stay more than another year.

The positions mentioned are irrelevant. This is blatantly a load of hot air from some highly paid public affairs guru who thinks the best way to stop the peasants from revolting is to promise them some new toys.

The type of toy being promised is neither here nor there. The press release was probably crafted by someone who doesn't have a clue about the (alleged) deficiencies in our squad, never mind Fergie's plans to sort them out. No great surprise they mentioned a striker though. The fans love it when we buy strikers.

Either that or the same old tabloid "journalists" making up shite, like they do every week.

To be fair we all knew last summer that the transfer market was over-valued. Add to that every other club in the world knew we had the bucks thanks to the Ronaldo sale and it wasn't going to be sensible to buy much more than we did.

Owing to those circumstances the money may have been put to good use resting in a money market account or other short term investment opportunity. Any business would have done somthing similar if they had spare change like that.

The facts are pretty obvious, we do need another striker and someone to replace VDS. It may be a Pee Arr exercise as Pogue suggests but there may be a hint of truth about it as well.

So if there was no value in the market last summer, hows it going to be after a World Cup?
Also not all good players are going to the WC. For instance that Egyptian striker Zidan won't be going. The Russian keeper whatshisface, one of the highly regarded German keepers will mostly be on the bench, hardly upping their value. Kjaer, Dzeko and am sure people can name other good players that won't have their value inflated by a good WC performance.

Might be a baron summer for transfers in, if the Glazers are thinking of possibly selling they're not going to spend a penny in the transfer market are they.

Ah good old Harry Harris. He used to link United with a big name striker every Sunday when he worked for the Express. I think he got sacked 2008 after one bs article too many. Seems like he has not learned his lesson though....

Last summer was a bit of a strange one. The sales of Kaka and Ronaldo for astronomical fee's seemed to inflate asking prices all around Europe. I reckon they'll be more value to be had this summer, even if its a World Cup year.

I reckon the Glazers are probably hoping Ferguson does make a big name signing. Funny thing is though, more than likely we won't be doing.

Should be phrased ''access to funds'' as it's all coming from a debt credit facility.

How kind of the Glazer's to let Fergie spend any money he raises. Clearly he won't be given any actually investment...

So basically, normally this article would be called bullshit instantly, but because it can be used as a stick to beat the Glazers with it must be accurate? Come on now, I want the Glazers out as much as the next man, but this is silly.

We could do with a striker.
For next season? Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Diouf, Welbeck, Macheda. Plenty of depth there, especially if we start going back to 4-5-1 more often now that Rooney has fully transformed into some sort of cyborg.

New left winger and a new defensive midfielder if Hargreaves proves useless are higher up on the wanted list. Maybe a creative midfielder if somebody sexy is available.

Rooney is the only world class striker we have. Owen, if he even stays next season, will be a bit part player. Diouf will be a Manucho, in my honest opinion. Welbeck and Macheda are both kids and have not been playing much this season when we all expected them too. Berbatov has been distinctly average despite what the fanbois like us to believe. If Rooney had a proper partner, we'd be a hell of a lot stronger.
