experiment dec 2023

I know my research is very website specific but with the test in December and the latest news snippets it does seem like someone knew something but didn’t tell. The latest was only detected last month, which could take out a city and create injuries 10 X the city radius. These size ones will be the greatest danger I feel as the can go undetected until fairly close.

Apologies if already a thread, couldn’t find .

Not saying it wouldn’t be catastrophic if it hit a city, but what proportion of the earth’s surface are cities. A thousandth? And one of those is Norwich!

It's fine we don't need to worry until all the rich folk start investing in commercial space flights....wait :nervous:

And I'm all out of bubblegum.

It would be pretty bad if it landed right on top of you, but I think "take out a city" is a bit much.

Edit: Oh, I see you're talking about 2023 DZ2 and not 2023 DW. I can't find any actually reliable information about the damage, except for a brief quote from the head of ESA's Planetary Defence Office. He does say "city killer" but with air quotes, which makes it seem like maybe he's saying it because that's what it's been referred to online.

The asteroid that hits us will be the one we didn’t spot before it was too late. It’s not worth worrying about

I mean it could be the one we spotted but was too big for us to do anything about. Don't Look Up might be a documentary, actually. I wouldn't put it past Musk trying to flee to another star in his personal space ship.

Don't get worried about some remote possibility asteroids, get worried about climate change. It's a lot more certain, so at least your worrying energy isn't wasted.

We have the really big ones covered, don't we?

NASA redirected an asteroid half a year ago, and sure, while there are bigger ones out there, the operation succeded, so there should be lessons learned from it.

Now, there is also the question of risk assessment, how big of a chance for impact does the calculations say before its worth doing such a mission? Thats a big one.

It isn't a remote possibility, it's a long overdue event, and Bruce Willis has retired so we're fecked!

I was going to post a joke, but i see you live there, so nevermind.

Hope things get better soon.
Joke away, I’ve escaped to Savannah, Georgia.

Even if I still lived there, I’d ask the asteroid to cleave off the peninsula of Florida & take one for the team.

We think we have the big ones covered, but it's also a case of we don't know what we don't know. We'd probably see a planet killer coming, but who knows. We also might not realize it until it's too late. There were definitely lessons learned from DART, though. That asteroid was actually maybe twice as big as the "city killer" mentioned in this thread, though we just diverted its orbit around an even bigger asteroid. We'd need to catch a bigger asteroid as soon as possible, that's for sure.

So there's a comet. Big deal. It'll burn up in our atmosphere and whatever's left will be no bigger than a chihuahua's head.

While I do agree with you for the most part, there have been plenty of instances where asteroids have passed us and we haven’t known about it until after the event. They’re relatively quite dark objects because of their composition, shape and topography so they can be pretty hard to spot
