Aurelien Tchouameni | signs new contract til 2031, to be official after the World Cup

Even if you disregard the potential fee, he was on over £200k a week before he signed his new contract, and will almost certainly have got a pay rise the under the new terms.

I very much doubt our current owners would have paid his old wage, never mind the new one.

Though Luckhurst seems a terrible source, I do believe that any possibility will depend on Rodri.

Interesting, given that we signed Di Maria from them, Arsenal signed Özil, Bayern signed Robben, Inter signed Sneijder and a bunch of other examples.
Di Maria  literally exactly what we want to avoid. Funded them signing Bale and didn’t want to be here.

Moving the goal posts, aye.

You said we would never poach one of their best talent against their wishes, which is exactly what happened.

No it wasn’t? They shifted him out as they wanted James. So literally not against their wishes. Who’s the one moving the goalposts?

It was James, Bale was already at Madrid.

Real Madrid wanted to sell Di Maria and bought their new shining toy James, who was the vastly inferior player, but it certainly wasn’t against Madrid’s wishes.
Arsenal didn’t poach Ozil or signed him against Madrid’s wishes either, Madrid sold him and got Bale.

Thought you meant the player's wishes, fair enough. We did get Casemiro, though, who wanted to leave the club, they don't keep players that want to leave.

The Sneijder and Robben points are still valid. I’m just irrational when it comes to buying players from Real. Probably because it’s one of the very few clubs that the majority of players would see United as a step down from.

sometimes it's just tactical reasons. I can imagine if they get Rodri they would rather partner him with a more dynamic DM or CM (or maybe even use Bellingham in a deeper role)

I feel the same way but ultimately you got to understand that many people in the world think Real Madrid is a bigger club than ours. Historically they are the most successful and its why players like Ronaldo wanted to leave us as soon as he got an offer.

I didn't want to sign Tchouameni because i dont like the feeling that we will automatically sign everything that Real Madrid will send us; but in the market the only real marquee signing in midfield seems to be midfielders that Real Madrid do not want anymore because they are rebuilding their midfield at the same time.

At the same time It's why I'm more hesitant on buying psg's bomb squad players with players like Barcola because I dont want to feel like a club like ours is inferior to just a new born club that's in their prime.

I prefer Camavinga simply because Camavinga, Mainoo, Santos & Tielemans feel very stylistically similar but have different individual specialities + being left footed. Tchouameni stands out as quite different to the rest of our midfielders and because of his status and playstyle, he would be the 2nd name on the teams sheet with the rest of midfield rotating at LCM.

Luckhurst is a lone voice. He's really sticking his neck out to look silly, I can't buy he knows something happening in Madrid that no one else does.

The only thing you could say is he might have Mourinho connections from his time at United, apparently he was Jose's pet amongst the journos who covered United at the time.

It also makes complete sense Tchouameni could go if Rodri comes in.

Logically however, if the contract extension and pay rise was already signed, I don't see how it's plausible we match his new pay bump. A player signing an extension and pay rise within weeks of selling him is surely unheard of.

We’re desperate for an 100m signing. Trying to match city and Chelsea.

But as you say yourself, the Rodri links would put his future as a first XI player in question. The midfield would likely be Bellingham, Valverde and Rodri. The first and last are undroppable, Valverde has been captaining the side, so it looks like Tchouameni is the one to miss out. He'd also bring in enough money for them to buy Rodri, one would assume (given he's got a year left on his deal). Mitten has been adamant for a while that this remains an option, albeit, not super likely. But that may change if they can prise Rodri away from City.

would he cost as much as that? Surely not. I don’t think we’d pay that.
Probably since he’s signed a new contract. INEOS will probably be thinking we need a star midfield signing. The other 2 are decent but not like a big name player

He doesn't want to leave Madrid, he would cost an absolute fortune in fee and wages, I'm also not sure he's even that great.

Other than that seems like a sound signing

Ditto - I worry Tchouameni becomes the new Casemiro, a great player but also one who's profile and salary makes him almost undroppable. Cas was great this season, but he was pretty poor the year before - we don't need players on massive salaries who's performance is inconsistent. And let's be honest, Cas was a much better midfielder than Tchouameni. I'd happily take Tchouameni on a low(ish) salary if he seemed genuinely keen on the move. But if it's because he's being bombed out of Madrid and we're only getting him by paying through the nose, no thanks.

happy to have him if the transfer fee is south of 80M and the salary is south of 300k, otherwise no thank you.

I don't think we should compare Tchouameni to Casemiro like that. This is a player in his prime, who would comfortably remain at a high level for probably 4-5 years. Casemiro came here well past his peak, with an extreme mount of football in his legs. From the start you could see that he had physically declined and it only become clearer once Ten Hag's nonsensical tactics exposed him further.

It's always a concern to potentially sign a player on very high wages. We've seen it ourselves with a lot of the flops we subsequently couldn't move on again. I wouldn't worry so much though about that in this case. Tchouameni is a quality midfielder with a skill set any team requires. I have little doubts, that if we would sign him, he'd be a really good player for the club.

That said, I don't think we need to think about it anymore. Whatever Luckhurst is conjuring up in his head, doesn't really have any bearing on reality. The man knows nothing and has to fill his little articles for the Sun. A dummy, working for a newspaper for dummies. Not worth paying attention to.

Reading the BBC live blog and Simon Stone has just posted this!

It is sounding like there is an element of positivity around Manchester United’s chances of signing Real Madrid’s France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Although there have been reports Tchouameni has agreed a new deal with the Spanish giants, that does not square with a belief Real are open to selling the 26-year-old.

United have a long-standing interest in the France international and he is one of a number of midfield players on their list of potential targets.

However, a couple of significant issues remain, both around finance.

How much would Real Madrid want for Tchouameni – and how much would he want to move?

United felt they got stung, both on fee and salary, when they dealt with Real Madrid around the Casemiro deal four years ago. They will want to avoid that scenario.

For the moment, it seems very much a case of watch this space.

Did he not knock out Valverde? Surely that’s a concern.

Only for Valverde if he keeps it up this season

You do wonder about if he'd be happy playing second fiddle on the bench to him if Rodri signs...

Don’t believe him. He knows absolutely nothing about his new contract.
Why would anyone take someone seriously when this is what they write:

That's not even being at square 1

Was it not a shoving match in which Valverde fell and hit his head off a bench or something on the way down.

Depends on what do we believe, but sounds like Valverde was asking for it anyway so don’t think it’s much of a concern.

Not sure I believe there is any real interest in him now as why would he sign a new contract unless we are trying for a loan with an obligation or something random like that.
