Why were a good chunk of the players so anti Alonso? He seemed to be doing fine to me.

If reports are correct, selfishness. The main players accused of that are Valverde, Vinicius and Bellingham.
If it makes the deal easier to do, get him in. I think he's the best candidate to replace the defensive side of the game we'll be losing from Casemiro anyway
Well they’re certainly not going to let go of Valverde so maybe this one is actually possible.
He asked them to work hard and tried to dictate tactically to them but many of them believe that is below their pay grade.

As concerning as this relationship is, it's also something that can probably be remediate.
Tchouameni certainly the better player now, but something in me still wants Baleba above all. Higher ceiling and all that, perhaps. His speed across the ground, with and without the ball makes him my preferred choice, even over Tchouameni (who I would of course be very happy with).

Because of the two he’s more of a fan favourite. That might not be their prerogative but Valverde seems the safer of the two from the outside.

Where does this come from? By all accounts, his mentality is extremely good and is really professional. Casemiro-like. Very resilient to criticism too, should look up up his interview and see how he has gone from being booed to being a very good player for them.
Because he’s absolutely one of their undroppable/best players. There is no chance they sell him. I would have him at United in a heartbeat otherwise, he’s unreal.
