Tomislav Crnković

Tomislav Crnković (17 June 1929 – 17 January 2009) was a Croatian footballer.

He was born in Kotor in what was still the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. As a defender, he played for HAŠK, Metalac and Dinamo Zagreb. Abroad, he later played at Wiener Sport-Club and Servette FC.

With the Yugoslavian national team, he had 51 caps. He was part of the team that won silver at the 1952 Olympics, and was also a member of Yugoslavia's 1954 and 1958 FIFA World Cup squads.

With his 439 caps at Dinamo, Crnković was part of their Yugoslav First League-winning club in 1954 and 1958 as well as their Yugoslav Cup - winning team in 1951 and 1960. Crnković is regarded to be one of Dinamo's greatest defenders of all time. In 2006, he was also the founder of the Croatian Football Federation.[1][2] After his football career ended, Crnkovic spent a brief time as a journalist and later the owner of a popular restaurant in Zagreb.

Crnković was a well-known womanizer, and was married at least five times in his life. He also found himself in financial trouble after being involved in a car accident where he was injured. He insisted to pay money to the other victims of the accident as well which left him nearly bankrupt.

Cornel Dinu

Dinu is the greatest defender in Dinamo Bucharest's history(winning six league titles and two cup titles with them) and one of the most complete romanian players ever(could play very well both sweeper and defensive midfielder). Very elegant player with trademark long diagonal 40 meters passes, good technician and with solid pace. He was even a solid scorer, had good sense of anticipating and decent tackling.
He was one of the key members of Romania during the 1970 World Cup and was even nominated for the Ballon d'Or that year.During his career he was named Romanian player of the year 3 times , finished runner-up 2 times , 4th once and another 2 times finished 5th.

Yuri Nikolaevich Voinov

Country:
Russia (
USSR)
Club: Zenit Leningrad, Dynamo Kyiv

Played for team plant name Kalinin, city of Kaliningrad, Moscow region (1949-1950), Zenit Leningrad (1951-1955), Dynamo Kyiv (1956-1964).

In All Stars Team Championship of the USSR: 1953, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960.

Selected to the 1958 FIFA World Cup team of the tournament.
1960 European Nations' Cup winner.
Ballon d'Or 12th: 1959

USSR Champion: 1961.
USSR silver-prize winner: 1960.
The USSR national team (1954-60) had 23 matches and scored 3 goals.

One of the best Central midfielders in the history of the Soviet football. He took the field Puškaš. Played against Pele and Garrincha. Was in the dream team in the World Cup. Kept in the hands of European Cup. A champion of the USSR. All these components built in chronological order, give the desired amount merit outstanding player. Together with Igor Netto several years were inseparable couple midfielders in the national team squad, which was considered the strongest in Europe.

Voinov's game was deprived of the pleasures of externalities. Simplicity and reliability - the cornerstones of his conduct in the field. And still-formidable strength right foot kick. Even if the FK for Kiev footballers was prescribed 30-35 meters from someone else's gate, and the ball came Yuri, neither goalkeeper could not be confident in the outcome of what happens in a moment. But the main thing that is applying Voinov - it is perhaps amazing workability. Number of tactical and technical action player in a single match had not yet calculated, but priority of famous football halfback this section was and is evident in science.

At a time when Dynamo Kyiv was the first not Moscow team became the champion of the USSR, the Yuri personified and was unquestioned authority in the Ukranian's club. Unique football personality. Great, now would have said, I think, playmaker.

Ferenc Puskás [1 April 1927[3] – 17 November 2006) was a Hungarian footballer and manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. A prolific forward, he scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for Hungary, and 514 goals in 529 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues. Puskás's Hungary career is often said to be 83 goals in 84 games[2] - the extra game and goal was from a match vs Lebanon that was played in 1956, however it was only recognised as an official game by the Hungarian FA in May 2002.[4] He became an Olympic champion in 1952 and led his nation to the final of the 1954 World Cup where he was named the tournament's best player. He won three European Cups (1959, 1960, 1966), 10 national championships (5 Hungarian & 5 Spanish Primera División) and 8 top individual scoring honors.

Puskás started his career in Hungary playing for Kispest and Budapest Honvéd. He was the top scorer in the Hungarian League on four occasions, and in 1948, he was the top goal scorer in Europe. During the 1950s, he was both a prominent member and captain of the Hungarian national team, known as the Mighty Magyars. In 1958, two years after the Hungarian Revolution, he emigrated to Spain where he played for Real Madrid.

While playing with Real Madrid, Puskás won four Pichichis and scored seven goals in two European Champions Cup finals. In 1995, he was recognized as the top scorer of the 20th century by the IFFHS.

After retiring as a player, he became a coach. The highlight of his coaching career came in 1971 when he guided Panathinaikos to the European Cup final, where they lost 2–0 to AFC Ajax. Despite his defection in 1956, the Hungarian government granted him a full pardon in 1993, allowing him to return and take temporary charge of the Hungarian national team.[8] In 1998, he became one of the first ever FIFA/SOS Charity ambassadors.[9] In 2002, the Népstadion in Budapest was renamed the Puskás Ferenc Stadion in his honor.[10] He was also declared the best Hungarian player of the last 50 years by the Hungarian Football Federation in the UEFA Jubilee Awards in November 2003.[11] In October 2009, FIFA announced the introduction of the FIFA Puskás Award, awarded to the player who has scored the "most beautiful goal" over the past year. He was also listed in Pelé's FIFA 100.

Impressive list of awards below

Igor Netto - 'The Goose'

Excerpts from a couple of nice articles:

http://thesefootballtimes.co/2016/07/05/igor-netto-the-forgotten-legend-of-russian-football/

...At the age of 19, Netto was discovered by Spartak who gave him the number 6 and immediately made him a part of the first team. The Red-Whites were in the middle of one of the worst periods in the history of the club, and they hadn’t won the league in 10 years by then. They had also lost most of their pre-war regulars to local rivals Dinamo and CDKA, who took advantage of Spartak’s poor health, while the club founders, the four Starostin brothers, were imprisoned in a Gulag.

They were therefore in need of young players with whom they could build a new powerful squad around, and Netto fitted perfectly into this plan. Just like many great Spartak players before and after him, he both preferred and mastered a possession-based approach to football. Initially he started in defence, but soon after head coach Abram Dangulov figured out that he could utilise his strong passing skills, incredible vision of the game and great technique better further up the pitch, Netto was moved to midfield, where he developed into one of the finest box-to-box midfielders in history.

“Igor Netto was definitely a player ahead of his time,” Joel Amorim, Spartak Moscow expert at Russian Football News says. “He was too talented to play on the left side of the defence or even as a wide midfielder, but he still turned out to be one of the most brilliant playmakers of all-time. He had a golden left foot and you still cannot find many players these days with his passing skills and incredible vision.”

In Robert Edelman’s book Spartak Moscow – The History of the People’s Team in the Worker’s State Simonyan explains Netto’s approach to football: “He [Netto] completely refused to recognise that there was such a thing as a long pass. He was very self-confident and never wanted to make a mistake with a pass. He never took a risk, and if any of us made a long pass, he would shout: ‘What’s with you? Are you playing village football?’”

---

http://russianfootballnews.com/igor-netto-the-greatest-captain-of-them-all/

...Playing in Spartak’s red and white kit, Netto earned himself the nickname ‘the Goose’ because of his hissing voice and long neck, and his rise was immediate. Netto was a skilled passer, something that fitted perfectly with Spartak’s possession based short-passing style. Aleksei Paramonov, a teammate of Netto from his debut until 1959 when Paramonov retired, recalled Netto’s quick trip to the top of Soviet football:

“I was five years older than Igor, but the thing that surprised me the most, was that this young player, without any pressure or demands from anybody, stayed on the pitch after each training session to improve his technique. He was juggling, kicking the ball, trying to improve his acceleration. This kind of training allowed him to become one of the best players in the country.”

Apart from his great technical abilities, Igor Netto was furthermore able to read the game like few others, which allowed him to split countless opposing defences from each other with his vision and passing skills. Much like the famous Spartak playing style, Netto was no fan of long passes, and so he constantly pushed his teammates to keep the ball on the ground and to practice a game of short passing and possession. These skills made him a nightmare for opponents as well as one of the greatest pleasures for spectators.

It obviously didn’t take Netto long to establish himself as a crucial part of Spartak sides, and after he consolidated his spot in the starting line-up during his debut season in 1949 he never lost it again. During his 18 seasons for the Red-Whites, he played 368 matches, scored 36 goals, won five national championships as well as three Cup, and finally but importantly, he was 14 times chosen to be among the top 33 players in the Soviet Union, a number only Lev Yashin and Oleg Blokhin bettered.

Stjepan Bobek - The Master Dribbler

Stjepan Bobek was born in Zagreb (now Croatia's capital). A fine ball player, like so many of his team-mates, Bobek was renowned for his technique, vision and goalscoring ability and is commonly regarded as one of Yugoslavia's greatest players. He was adept both at creating goal-scoring chances and taking them. He got 38 of them in his 63 matches for the national side. For his club, Partizan Belgrade, he scored 403 goals in 468 matches between 1945 and 1958.

He was a center forward, an individualist, a great dribbler and unusually skillful striker. Later he played a more creative role, but throughout his career he played for the team, enjoying creating chances for teammates.

His dribbling ability and fast body swerve could take him past opponents with ease, so much so that Ferenc Puskás by his own admission tried to imitate the style. The powerful shot that he had developed while playing at centre forward meant that he remained a goalscoring threat wherever he played.

Internationally, he is the all-time top scorer for the Yugoslavia national team, scoring 38 goals in 63 appearances between 1946 and 1956, and was a member of Yugoslav squads which won two Olympic silver medals (in 1948 and 1952) and played in two FIFA World Cups (in 1950 and 1954).

"I played football spontaneously," Bobek remembered. "I didn't think too much about what I did, or how to dribble, but that was a time when it was not common for coaches to give individual instructions to players. I knew how to play. The coach told me what position I was in and that was that. Dribbling was my most important skill, but I had some weaknesses like tackling and heading."

Hans-Jurgen “Dixie” Dorner – The Beckenbauer of The East

One of East Germany’s greatest ever players and the “Franz Beckenbauer of the East”. A versatile defender who played predominately as a sweeper but could also slot in at left-back or central defence.

He distinguished himself during his career by being named East Germany's player of the year three times (1977, 1984 and 1985) – the only East German player to do this besides goalkeeper Jürgen Croy.

Voted Dynamo Dresden’s greatest ever player in 1999, he captained the team to their best European seasons, twice reaching the Quarter finals of the European Clubs' Champions Cup in 1977 and 1979. He also guided his team to Quarter finals in the 1975–76 UEFA Cup and both the 1984–85 and the 1985–86 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

A very intelligent and elegant player, Dorner relied on his exceptional reading of the game and calmness under pressure to shut down threats, while his excellent technique and passing ability allowed him to begin attacks from deep. In fact, his surging runs through the midfield often resulted in him reaching the penalty area, and during his time at Dynamo Dresden he managed 65 league goals in 392 games.

In 1976 Dorner became an Olympic champion – with East Germany beating a star-studded Poland in the final of the Football Tournament in Montreal. The heartbeat of the side, Dorner finished as his country’s top scorer with 4 goals.

Ivan Kolev - Bulgaria's First Superstar

The first superstar of Bulgarian football. Though he lacks the critical acclaim of Stoichkov or Asparuhov, it was Kolev who blazed the trail for Bulgarian footballers. Kolev is renowned as the first Bulgarian player to score at the Olympics, the first Bulgarian to score in European competition, the first Bulgarian to score a hat trick in the European Cup and the first Bulgarian to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

His abilities and quality would fit in in any generation; explosive, smart, nimble, with a powerful shot and great placement -- his trademark was scoring at tight angles. His pace was exceptional and it is reported he could run 100 metres in 10.6 seconds. He was named Bulgarian Footballer of the Year in 1962 and finished his international career with 25 goals in 75 games.

As a testament to his enduring quality, Bulgaria coach Rudolf Vytlačil called him the best player in the squad (alongside Asparuhov) at the 1966 World Cup, despite being well past his best at 35 years of age.

'We have outstanding players. Ivan Kolev, who needs no introduction, and the greatest footballer Bulgaria has produced in Georgi Asparoukhov' -- Rudolf Vytlačil, Bulgaria Coach 1966

IVAN BULJAN:

One of the best defenders in Europe during the 70’s. An extremely strong (both mentally and physically) and versatile player, able to play across the defensive line and even in midfield. Very calm and comfortable with the ball at his feet (he ocassionally played as a sweeper). An important player as Hamburg reached the 1979/80 European Cup final.

DIMITAR PENEV:
http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/news/newsid=2264598.html

A stylish yet physical centre-back, Penev shone in Bulgaria colours. He scored two goals in 90 appearances – 15 as captain – and earned nine of his caps at the 1966, 1970 and 1974 FIFA World Cups. Having made 364 league outings and never been sent off, Penev retired in 1977 aged 32.

According to his passport, Penev was born on 12 July 1945 in Mirovyane, near Sofia, though it is believed the actual date was 10 July as his parents registered the birth two days later. Penev's love of the game led him to join Lokomotiv Sofia's academy aged 14. The Railwaymen played some entertaining football in the early 1960s, but silverware was proving elusive. That changed in 1964 when the capital team – with a spine of Penev, Nikola Kotkov and Spiro Debarski – won the championship.

Penev moved to CSKA Sofia soon after and the rest, as they say, is history. With the Army Men, he lifted seven league titles, five domestic cups and reached the semi-finals of the 1966-67 European Champion Clubs' Cup, CSKA losing to Internazionale in a replay after two 1-1 draws. Penev was voted Bulgarian player of the year several months later.

LADISLAU ‘LASZLO’ BOLONI:

Legendary Romanian player and later coach, Laszlo Boloni was an excellent box-to-box midfielder, strong in defence with a crunching tackle and endless stamina; his good technique, solid shot and great passing range also made him a threat going forward (he scored 23 goals for Romania). Named Romanian player of the Year in 1977 and 1983, Boloni also helped Steaua Bucharest win the European Cup in 1986 and earned over 100 caps for the national side.

Having a proper look at the pool now and have to say the depth is incredible. For any of the players coming available in my next turn I can find a very good use.
