I can imagine it's a bit of a culture shock for him to go from being coached by Graham Potter to watching Arteta trying to remember what the hell Pep wrote on the board at HT when City were losing.

As soon as Foden said that soundbite of him being one of the most most impressive players in the England camp, you knew someone was to get mugged off on him

Note number 1 : Try to score goals until you have more goals than them
Number 2 : Dont let in anymore goals

You can look at his stats below to give an impression of what kind of player he is. His standout qualities are on the ball and pressing whilst his weaknesses are duels on the ground and in the air. He's one of the wrost defenders in Europe in the air but one of the best dribblers. One striking thing is that he engages in one on ones quite a lot but loses them nearly all the time. He's pretty specialised player that, as others have mentioned, should be playing a three. At the least he needs someone like Maguire next to him, a partner who is dominant in the air and likes to engage the opposition's most dangerous forward.

To compare him against Lindelof

https://fbref.com/en/players/f5deef4c/Victor-Lindelof

It's far from a neat comparison. Lindelof doesn't engage often (which annoys many fans) but he usually gets it right when he does. Lindelof is better at passing but White is more of a player to step out and advance the play.
Dribbling? The number 1 quality you need in a defender. Who cares about aerial and grounds duels?

White: "OK boss"

*Game starts, Chambers gives a goal away*

White: "What now boss?"
Arteta: "Errr I'm so happy, so so happy"
White: "What?"
Arteta: "So so happy"

I didn't watch the game, but did frequent the Arsenal mania forum, where many Gooners said he got dominated aerially. Not a good start but its still early days for him, and It seems he needs a more commanding figure next to him.
It was extremely evident. Toney was eating him up in every duel. White’s in the 9th percentile for aerial duels won!

Inflated English tax. Been White was never the best defender at Brighton so paying 50m for him is nothing but ridiculous. He looks bang average and won't do Arsenal any good in a back 4 system. Strange buy to be fair.

This wasn’t the best piece of defending I’ve seen.

Arsenal’s defensive record wasn’t even that bad last season. Did they need a CB? Could’ve invested that in another position.
That’s awful. At first I thought it was on the touch line but he’s in the box giving that much space. Definitely shades of Lindelof there.

Everyone saying it was a bad game for him.

Yet you look at his career stats, and its pretty much what he is.

Rashford put him on his backside twice in 20 seconds last season. Now that guy is your defensive leader?

Its just a bad transfer. Not just for Arsenal, for him. He needs to be in a back 3 where he has time to move the ball, and doesn't have to take care of the aerial threat. He will crumble over this season as he is continually exposed.

Guaranteed when we play them, Cavani will have him for breakfast all game.

I mean the got rid of liuz because he's a back 3 specialist and wanted to play back 4, then signed another back 3 specialist to replace him. Its just beyond comedy at this point.

I know it's popular to bash Lindelof here but he is nowhere near as bad as White is. I don't think Lindelof is good enough to be our main CB but he is a decent centre back and can definitely play in a formation with 2 CBs. Meanwhile I just cannot see White doing it with his shocking aerial duels win rate. He has to play in back 3 where other 2 CBs are very good in the air.

He'll probably be the rock behind a clean sheet against Werner and Lukaku next week, you jinxing feckers.
haha that's what I was thinking. They'll somehow end up beating Chelsea next weekend and then next celebrating getting beaten by just a single goal by City.

Some credit has to go to Arteta for settling him in so fast. I was expecting blocks and tackles for 5-6 games.

It’s only one game but I do feel for him having never been under anywhere near this level of scrutiny, with a £50m price tag. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he’s shown to be nowhere near good enough.

They'd be a much better team if they have us 50m for Lindelof

"He can be better than Maguire"

The most delusional thinking from Arsenal fans in a long while.
I have to disagree. Delusional thinking from Arsenal fans is quite a common recurrence and not as rare as you think.

I’m seeing a lot of people saying he needs to play in a back 3 to show his qualities. If that’s the case, that’s a sign of an incompetent player. If you can only look good in a back 3 and not in a back 2, you’re not a very good defender. Only being able to play in a 3 is being not quite good enough to be a centre back and not quite good enough to be a midfielder.

Ben White did get dominated last night but it's also the dysfunctional unit he has around him. Chambers, Mari and Lokonga look like fairly nothing players - or at least for a club the size of Arsenal, and his coach is a clown.

If they want any chance of this transfer working out they need better players around him. White was okay for Brighton last season, but he isn't an outstanding player who will change Arsenal's fortunes on his own. I've said it before and it's not even a joke, the Brighton defence he was part of is better than this Arsenal one, and it's not particularly close.

Fair dos. I just remember a lot of people were taking the p*ss that they paid the same as we paid for Sicknote Varane. It’s not looking so daft now.
Are you suggesting he’s on the same level as Varane?
