Yup, I think Case in particular. Bruno is playing further forward and Mainoo can't really pass, so the entire responsibility of playing those line breaking passes against a mid block falls to Case. Bruno is just hanging out in the hole for a pass that never really comes. Maybe Amorim had something going with Bruno deep and Cunha / Mbeumo waiting there at #10 to receive the ball. Carrick needs to find a solution. Maybe the answer is to just have Bruno drop deep and swap positions with Mainoo through the game.
I think Licha is supposed to be carrying some of that weight but it didn't really happen in the West Ham game and obviously he was out yesterday.

I think Bruno should have freedom to drop deeper when needed, the main thing is that he mixes it up and doesn't constantly go looking for the ball.

Yup true, having a cheat code like Licha is more than good enough for this season if he stays fit. If we sign a good passer in the middle, I think Licha's days might be numbered. We need five giants at the back in the mould of Hincapie, Timber, Gabriel, Saliba, Rice to compete. Especially so if Casemiro is gone.

His desire to get into the box reminded me of the time Rooney did something similar at the Emirates: getting into a position where Nani could simply roll the ball to him.

A quintessential Manchester United counter attack. I've probably watched it 50 times since yesterday.

And that celebration, a mixture of delight and pent up frustration. This boy is going to storm the league next season. We are a proper midfield player or two from striking fear into teams again.

We were not a threat against West Ham either. We are less threatening without a striker it seems.

We are still winning games because Sesko is coning off the bench and winning them.
So why change what's working?

I am not really advocating for Sesko to be used as a sub only, he probably deserves to start a game, I just see why he is not starting with Carrick, I see why Carrick is using what's been working for him in the last 2 months, that's all.

and this could be what Sesko needs, the team winning regardless of him starting, granted he has scored 2 winning goals so far and rescued us from a loss coming off the bench, this is allowing him the space to do what he can without the pressure of expectations on him.

Sesko adds lot more to the team with this physicality and pace.

He had 2 couple of 1v1s, and almost had one more only for Cunha to lose his footing. It was very similar situation, he could have easily got great 1v1 chance. His movement, link up play is good and Mbeumo for all his good work can't deal with CBs. Sesko can be the target man, outlet for players to look for easy pass when they are under pressure. It won't work everytime but works more than it would with Mbeumo.

Mbeumo is very good RW, since Amad is having few average games it's better to move Mbeumo to RW and Sesko as CF.

Every game he came on as a sub, he is getting good chances. Even against Burnley he got so many good chances, which shows his movement is class and players are comfortable finding him in the box .
I think going forward, Sesko should start too, my point is really mostly about understanding why Carrick wants Sesko to come off the bench instead of starting games, looking back at how the game vs Everton panned out and us just conceding the ball to Everton in the second and the midfield having an off day, it made me understand why Sesko is coming off the bench instead of starting.

Yeah Carrick had his reasons and set up, but now that the initial line up is not working like before, its time to bring on Sesko as he offers so much more than Mbeumo as a CF.

With his performance and goals, he has earned a start for sure. Even against Brunley when he started, he was very good. So he has done the hard part now, it's time for him to start and continue his good performance/goal scoring run.

Confidence is key with this lad. Earlier in the season he takes a touch and not a first time finish.

Or we always have the Amorim idea -- drop Mainoo, play Bruno CM. I'm beginning to see the appeal. Can squeeze in an extra attacker on top (don't have to drop Amad to play Sesko, enough to drop Mainoo).
Mainoo's lawyers will be in touch

So why change what's working?
Having your main striker coming on from the bench in a 0-0 or drawing game state to rescue points is hardly “working”. It already failed vs West Ham, for instance. If we were already winning games and Sesko was coming on to kill games, sure. But right now he’s doing unsustainable stuff in scoring and making immediate point saving impact from limited minutes.

The false nine gimmick has to stop. Mbeumo is not suited for the role, and in any event we haven’t the players or the playstyle for that type of football. Our midfielders are long ball penetrative passers, we’re not set up for the inside the lines tiki taka and teams can just squeeze us out when there’s no actual striker there as we’ve seen against both West Ham and Everton now.

I really like the guy. Despite his recent form I don't think he's that good, but young Lewa wasn't great either and showed how much can be achieved by hard work, so who knows what's his ceiling.

"“I’m not even thinking: ‘I have to start, I have to start.’ For me it’s just whenever the coach decides to put me there one time or not – I’m just going to be there [ready],” Sesko said. “If I get five minutes I’m going to use them, and for me it’s about trying to enjoy and delivering for the team."

Garnacho, read and learn. Though I'm afraid it's already too late for you.

Yeah. Give him a start and play Mbeumo in his natural position or drop him to the bench...

And what exactly is it that is working? A scenario where we don’t look like scoring until Sesko comes on is perfectly fine so long as Sesko comes on?

The pressure and expectation on him is growing due to him scoring goals. He’s a Manchester United striker, not a baby. Pressure is a given.

Genuinely one of my favourite goals of the season. Win it back in our own penalty area from one of their many Moyesy crosses, Sesko the first player to receive it, quick give and go to Shaw, then you have an inch perfect pass from Cunha, Sesko turning in to Usain Bolt and leaving Tarkowski in another time zone, another perfect pass from Mbuemo, and a superb finish to top it off. Pure football and pure Man Utd goal.

I think the fluid forward 3 (Cunha, Mbeumo, Dorgu/amad) works well with big 6 teams that defend high up the pitch with a high block and dominate possession. Carrick’s fluid front 3 concept struggle to break down deep low block teams like west ham, Everton. So against low block teams, we need a leading target man in the box for our other forwards to play off and pass to. Simple as that.

Can't wait for him to get the confidence to start putting his foot through a few longer shots. He has an absolute canon and we've barely seen it so far. I know there's less space in the premier league, but I think it's a 'new-boy' thing. When we're struggling to break teams down would love to see him pull out of the box for a change and just hammer it.

It's gonna be glorious when he eventually twats one in like he has in the past.

The last couple of months have been really fun, and I'm very happy with how his season is progressing. I was a Hojlund apologist for a while but I think it's clear that we've upgraded with Sesko. I can't think of many strikers I'd rather have than him honestly

would like to see him start. One of my initial worries with him was his lack of physicality for such a big guy, but that was most likely an adjustment to the speed and physicality of the PL, and a new team. I think also, now he has scored goals, he just looks more confident in his all around game. He came into the Everton game, where they were playing very physical, and he slotted in well. There is so much more to come from him. I think Carrick so far has handled him well but think now, is the time to start him. We pushed Mbuemo onto the wing and he got an assist on the goal. More of that please.

Also Amad's form is not great and Mbeumo better on the right, so makes a lot of sense.

feel like lots of people are missing this part when they are seemingly ok with sesko being stuck starting on the bench. It isn't like the front 3 is absolutely clicking right now without him. He absolutely must start next game if Carrick wants to keep any semblance of accountability with the players in my opinion.

Physcially when Sesko arrived he was way off the level for the EPL, but he has improved and adapted for all to see.
This is the first time I believe he should start, was against it for the Everton match considering going up against 2 CBs who want to get into physcial battles, I felt a fluid attack would keep them guessing until a super-sub was required.

Amad's form isn't great, Mbeumo can do his role. Cunha is just brilliant at bring us up the pitch and has worked on his game defensively.

It's a home game so we should dominate possession, it's time to free Sesko on them. He has also shown his pace and ability to run in behind if needed, plus he can get on the end of crosses. It's definitely time for him to start.

He's hardly gonna give away the starting line up in the pre match press conference
Agreed. He’s earned a start, I hope that comes on Sunday. Whether Carrick will change it up I’m unsure but personally I wouldn’t read too much into his comments in interviews post the game Monday or today. He doesn’t seem the type to give away who’s starting in press conferences and nor should he. Zero benefit in him doing so.

Just a case of wait and see.

I think the case for him starting vs Palace now is far stronger than it was vs Everton or WH, that's what I meant when I said it was working and maybe now might not be working (we could not score without him vs Everton & WH), again, my original point was that I understood why Carrick opted not to start him vs WH and Everton and now, perhaps he will have to drop Amad now, and if Sesko starts now, I feel he would do well, but I won't be surprised if he struggles to get chances because our midfield might have an off day just like they did vs Everton

He is simply not as sharp when he starts. That's the honest truth.

Even when he's isn't that good on the ball, he offers us a lot IMO.

Consider it phase-by-phase:

On build up, Amorim's whole Plan A for the season was to just lump it to the big guy and compete for second balls and I'd say it was pretty successful overall even if he overdid it. With Mbeumo upfront we just lose that part of the game entirely. Of course game state also matters. Do you take the risk when you're 1-0 up tiki-taka'ing in the back and playing risky passes? Wouldn't it be nice to just lump it to the big guy and compete in the middle instead?

On attack everyone can see it's not quite clicking. The false 9 or not false 9 question .. I dunno. Carrick is well within his rights to call out bullshit questions from journos but I think Sesko and Mbeumo occupy different positions in attack. For example, when Cunha comes central, Mbeumo has rotated wide several times to occupy that zone. Where as with Sesko you get a more traditional #9 upfront that's always going to be occupying the CBs. This isn't always a good thing, the rotations are great and make for some sexy attacks but

On defensive transitions / set defence: The Mbeumo and Amad pair do a lot more than Sesko + one of Mbeumo / Amad. Amad and Mbeumo are some of the hardest working attackers in the league and we'd probably get worse defensively if we just start Sesko over one of them.

Overall: I really do want to see Sesko start but I guess as long as Carrick's getting the results and bringing Sesko off the bench is effective, then why complain?

Yeah, last league game he started he only scored twice. Not sharp.
Maybe you dont get the point? Last game he started he scored a brace but should have score another three from 7 glorious chances he had. Think about it. Mbeumo is a much better finisher right now and fitter player overal. Thats why he starts. fullstop.

Yet Sesko is scoring at a much better rate.
