Robbie Fowler compares £74m Man Utd star Benjamin Sesko to an 'academy player'

And Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler speaking to Adventure Gamers, was asked which striker looks better suited to the league, with Fowler pulling no punches in his Sesko assessment. “For me I think the obvious one is Gyokeres," he explained.

“He's probably better suited to the Premier League and he understands what is needed in terms of speed, energy and commitment. Whereas Sesko has probably struggled a little at times. He looks a little bit, I hope this doesn't come across wrong, but he looks a bit of an academy player.
So he’s watched Gyokeres start 10 times in the league for the best team, score 3 non penalty goals, look fairly anonymous and honestly very lumbering at times.

Yet Šeško has had half the amount of starts and minutes, scored one less open play goal for a less consistent team, and he’s like an academy player.

Okay Rob.

If roles were reversed pundits would be commenting on how gyokeres has been invisible everytime he's played a half decent side, saying he's a waste of money from a poor league and they would be talking up seskos potential

Amorim said he will be out for a few weeks and that he will be available when the players leave for AFCON. So he will be out for 5 weeks in total? It’s been a few weeks for the last two weeks!

He will have watched that game thinking why didn't I get these high crosses all game

Missed him massively I thought. Didn't have the option to go long so it was back to the ponderous passing out from the back, and typically we finally start putting crosses into the box when he's not playing and didn't have his aerial ability there.

Just having a presence up front helps massively. They don't need to be banging in goals left, right and centre to make you better.

He's better than Zirkzee so ofcourse we missed him to some degree, the silent domination analysis is going to be very tiresome though. We've been as crap with him in the team as well.

Not sure Zirkzee was any worse than he used to be. Likely wouldn't have made any difference.

Out longer than expected according to Ruben Amorim in the press conference this afternoon. If Ruben is still around he'll need to buy or loan in a striker in the January window

yeah he is the new Weghorst

I read this morning he’ll be out for a “few more weeks”… meaning to me he should be back by Christmas or so. Not saying we couldn’t use another striker, but have you heard he’ll be out for longer?

Woltemade had a shorter CV, but imho looked more talented than Sesko who seems more all power striker and one of those highly rated from very young age who didnt progress as quickly last couple of years. Hindsight is a beautiful thing though.

Not saying Sesko will not make it. Think he's got the tools to be great, will need more time though.

I think we've looked shite and toothless in attack without him. Seems this system really needs a strong striker with solid linkup play. Zirkzee isn't that. And in hindsight we would have been in a stronger position to challenge for a top 4 with Højlund and Šeško.

I'm wondering the same. Are we missing him as a focal point or is it more Cunha and Mbeumo have gone off the boil slightly?

Fair assessment.

I think they benefit from the defenders Šeško soaks in. And Šeško did a good job winning duels and then flicking it on. So perhaps a bit of both really?

It's funny that we refused to cross the ball when he was playing while since he's gotten injured, we've relentlessly been putting in crosses.

Noticed this too. Pisses me off. There was a few games we were spamming crosses and Sesko was on the bench. He came on and we stopped crossing. Baffling.

We need him back, I think. However shit anybody thinks he's been, he's been way more important (and also better) than what we can currently muster with him out of the picture.
His injury also overlaps remarkably with the downturn in form. Coincidence?

We are missing him as a focal point. Went off the boil a bit before he got injured admittedly, but his aerial ability and hold up play was big for us in those Sunderland and Brighton wins.

As others have said, watch us quietly drop the endless crosses into the box the moment he returns.

Any news on his return?
From his agent yesterday. Pretty cryptic:
Benjamin feels very good, his rehabilitation is going according to plan. He can’t wait to get back on the pitch. He’s missing matches, he’s a little impatient and we hope that he will return soon, to be where he feels best again.
It’s hard to say exactly when he will return, it will ultimately be decided by the medical service and the coach.
I think we will see him on the pitch very soon. Maybe sooner than it seems at the moment.
Speaking of Big Elvis, his agent, he seems to be the anti-Raiola.

On Amorim
I think he’s primarily a person who is very honest a good man in everything he does. He does things with good intentions. He’s also extremely professional. I believe he’s an excellent person, an excellent coach. I believe he has his own vision and knows how to bring United to the top but he definitely needs time.

What is extremely difficult to explain in such a big club – because nobody wants to give you time at Manchester United and similar clubs – because everyone wants immediate results. But I simply think that this team and Ruben deserve time. We already saw progress. I must say he (Amorim) received Benjamin excellently. I think Ruben is first of all, an excellent person with fantastic charisma, extremely intelligent, emotionally intelligent and I think he knows what he’s doing.

I believe he’s in a difficult situation. It’s not easy to build such a project that requires enormous knowledge in this amount of time.
On United
I know that every player, every fan wants United to be champions right away but we see progress compared to last year. I believe this year will be significantly better than last year. I believe next year will be even better and then maybe in the third year we can realistically expect to challenge for the Premier League title.
United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, if not the biggest and people don’t understand you need time.

I think every team being built needs time. Just look at Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko: they have played very few matches together. I think that they - especially - need games together and they need to develop certain automatisms because then it’s much easier. When you have these automatisms, you don’t need to think where a player is or runs but you just know it automatically.

Then the results come and everything looks much better.
On Sesko
Right now, while he was injured, he had a bit more free time, so I visited him in Manchester and asked him honestly: 'how do you see your decision about Manchester United now, when you’ve had a little more time to think about it?'

He said: ‘Elvis, the only thing I would regret - and I would regret it for the rest of my life - would be if I hadn’t chosen Manchester United.'

I'd be fine with keeping bushroot in the squad and saving that money towards fixing the holes in midfield.

Can't wait to see him back. Definitely has been far from perfect, but you can see how we struggle to stretch teams without him on the field. Just gives us another dimension.

Would love to see him have more aggression and edge on the field as well, I love that in a centre forward. The positive thing is that off the field he is by all accounts an extremely hard worker and positive character.

Maybe he is enjoying the all aspects of life and seems to be settling in Manchester well. Hopefully it's not a fluff piece and is true. Hope he comes back stronger to prove himself to the club and it's fans.

While he does that, an added bonus would the likes of Neville and Fowler shutting up about him and finally opening their eyes to look at players like Wirtz and Isak.

guessing he will be back soon, and then we will go back to not crossing/putting anything into the box for him.
