For a man that's usually given credit for bringing the La Masia lads through the Barca first team, he does like to throw money around and seeing it as the solution to all of life's problems.
Maybe I'm wrong but he even didn't bring that many from La Masia.
First things to pop up in his mind is to just buy a new player.. Crazy.

We have an excellent youth fullback who was outstanding vs United in LC last season and did a good job marking a fella called Messi last weekend. His name is Pablo Maffeo.
Problem is that he's on a season long loan to Girona and can't be recalled:(

Pretty sure Danilo will slot in there for a little while. I don't see it as a huge issue short-term, but medium term we'll need to rest full backs at every opportunity. It could because a huge problem if we get another knock.

IIRC, there were reports when Pep arrived last season that he was looking at Delph at LB in training, so it would seem he's had a bit of experience working out in that position at least. Probably the best option they had within the squad at the moment, I think Danilo would stunt their attack too much.
Delph was superb tonight. A contender for MotM but can he do it week in week out and have his own injury issues cleared up?

Danilo is too right footed to play there regularly. He'll slow down the breaks too much. Zinchenko is another option.

Can be recalled? What a weird loan, especially as City will have no interest in the financial aspects of the deal

Mendy is a beast bursting forward, big loss. City are a joke on about buying in January already, before the scan is back. Getting the oil cheque book out again Pepsi eh...

I thought City bought Girona? Thought they might have had a recall agreement due to the relationship of the clubs.

I always wonder why we didn't go in for Mendy. Is there something for Jose to dis-like about his game... or do you think he wanted to give Shaw a last chance to prove himself?

Why is he talking about replacements already? Great way to instill confidence in your fullbacks till January

We know Pep is pretty ruthless with his players (which I don't necessarily see as a bad things. Sometimes, being practical and decisive can be good in moving your team forward) Combine that with City's oil money that will let him buy whoever he wants and you get a revolving door for the players.

Because they don't really have any alternative to Mendy. Danilo isn't a left back. Clichy and Kolorov were let go. So they needed another left back anyway.

They have two right full backs in the whole squad (without Mendy). Would be mad not to sign a left back in January.

Chelsea will be their first big test defensively wise. Liverpool could have been but Mane got a red card.

They have conceded just 3 goals in 9 games so far - as good as United (if United keep a clean sheet tonight). But DDG has made much more saves than Ederson (14 vs 7 in the EPL) which suggests that they defend pretty well or teams are afraid to have a go at them.

Ederson has been excellent, he made some smart stops last night and totally commands his area when the crosses come in (so far). We've conceded the fewest chances and created the most, given that 80% of sides are of a similar ilk in this league that bodes well. If we can start to beat the big teams in the mix as well then we are looking in good shape, but because of how we play it's a given some teams with score a handful against us, and it's on us not to crumble after that and kick on again.

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised if some good team puts several past Ederson. He looks good though.

One rather significant flaw in your thinking is that Maffeo is a right-back mate so no use for Mendy's position ;)

Agree that he's a promising player though and I for one was disappointed that he didn't get the nod last season for the West Brom away game, given how impressive he looked against United in the LC game a few days earlier.

They will go for Juventus's Sandro for 80m. When money is no object, you should go for the best.
Nah, they are more likely to go for a decent back-up option, e.g. someone like Bertrand who would be eligible for the CL as well.

Oi buggerlugs! I know he's a RB I was pointing out to an earlier sniper that our academy does produce FB's :)
Our great white hope LB Angelino had stalled but has been doing a bit better this season. Too little too late I think.

We like to look beyond the obvious candidates.
Aaron Martin of Espanyol is probably top of the list.
For Jan window or in general? Apart from G.Jesus all your signings are very straight forward and looked obvious candidates.

Straightforward?
Nipped in for B Silva while rival suitors were asleep, Monaco didn't need and didn't want to sell Mendy, bid for Mbappe 12 months ago, weakened leading PL teams with signing of Sterling and Walker, snatched Sane when most expected him to go to Bayern, de Bruyne from reluctant Wolfsburg.
Then the under the radar guys like Gabriel, Mooy, Unal, Zinchenko, Iheanacho who are in the squad or have been sold on for a tidy profit.
If you were a devoted Blue you couldn't help but be impressed with the worldwide scouting network and acquisitions made recently.
We screwed up a few times but all clubs do.

For first team all were obvious candidates. Yes you signed players before others did but that doesn't mean they weren't the obvious candidates. Whether you weakened the PL rivals or not is not under discussion here, signings beyond obvious candidates is.

Walker, Mendy, Danilo, B.Silva are all obvious candidates.

Signing some youngsters for your development squad hardly counts when we are talking about first team player replacement.

Basically like United now!
Not really, United don't have a top left back but plenty of decent options. Apart from Danilo your options haven't played 3-4 games between them at left back. You may need to resort to Sane or Sterling to do a job there.

He was making fun of a rival player in twitter and the whole summer he was trying to fool fans about joining their respective clubs. So i guess the injury is karma for him.

TBF a lot of our depth consists of players who can just 'do a job' there. I would trade all our leftbacks for Mendy..
^^This^^
Mendy is a fantastic young talent, and I was praying that United would have signed him.
Gutted for the lad to hear that this could be a very serious long term injury.

Pep may be right but look at how Jose talks about Young after failing to get Perisic and is nailed on to target another lb next summer.
Would Young play with as much confidence if he was immediately told he'd lose his place in a few months?
Hell Jose makes a point about our squad everytime Pogba is brought up, he always tells us how good the squad is.

Shame about the injury, was curious to see how he developed over the season under Pep's guidance but the Aarón Martín link in January makes some sense - although getting his buyout down from ‎€30 million won't be easy as both City & Barcelona were rebuffed when trying to negotiate the fee down in the summer. What is clear is that City can't count on Danilo as anything more than depth
