Proud Preston:

Alan Kelly
Mark Lawrenson, Phil Jones, Andrew Flintoff, Edith Rigby
Mike Summerbee, Kevin Kilbane, John Inman, Sir Richard Arkwright
Sir Tom Finney, Roy Barraclough

Actually the more I look at it the more gay it gets, but hey ho, Sir Tom Finney would have won it on his own anyway.
Winner

This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Many top players, even in a youth product from a top club, seem to come from villages.

I guess Amsterdam wins, which is impressive considering Amsterdam's population of only 800.000 people.

Sterling was born in Jamaica. You can get Joe Cole in there.

Rio (players I've seen) :

---------J.Cesar----------

Jorginho-T.Silva---Juan--Serginho

Leonardo -- Allan -- Marcelo

Romario

Adriano --- Ronaldo

Sao Paolo is also interesting. Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Neymar, Rivelino, Djalminha, Robinho, etc
That's the state, not the city. Neymar and Djalminha born in Santos.

Lee Dixon comes from Manchester but probably isn't getting ahead of Bury's Garry Neville. Should make the squad though.

Real interesting exercise this one.

Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and Rio would probably field the mightiest teams

Paramaribor/Surinam has born a lot of great Dutch footballers - Maybe someone with more knowledge could do one?
Even though all the players you’ve listed have roots on Surinam, Davids is the only one of that list born in Paramaribo.

You could make a pretty great Paramaribo born team, though:

Menzo
Van Gobbel - Fräser - Jerry de Jong - Braafheid
Seedorf - Davids - Winter
Blinker - Hasselbaink - Henny Meijer
The other three you’ve mentioned are born and raised in Amsterdam. But an all Amsterdam XI is definitely something else, attacking wise.

Jongbloed
Krol - Michels - Israël
Rijkaard - Bergkamp - Boussafa
Gullit - Cruyff - Kluivert - Keizer

[EDIT] completely forgot about Rinus Israël. He should definitely be in.

On a related note - Of the Celtic team that won the European Cup in1967, all but one member of the 15 man squad were born within 10 miles of Celtic Park.

Which got me thinking: which Dutch city could field the best team, and I am not too sure. I personally think I'd love to see the Utrecht team play (not a bad lineup for a city of approx 350,000 inhabitants...).

Rotterdam:
Doesburg
De Korver - Wim Jansen - Bogarde - Van Bronckhorst
Been - Van Heel - Wijnaldum
Moulijn- Van Persie - Wilkes
Utrecht:

Van Breukelen
JP de Jong - Van Veen - Kraaij
Wouters - Sneijder - Adelaar - Vanenburg
Van der Linden - Van Basten - Affelay

Milan:

(Greater Milan is even more impressive, including the likes of Scirea, for example)

Meazza - Delvecchio
* - Montolivo - Dossena - *
De Vecchi - Maldini - Bergomi - De Sciglio
Zenga

Roma:

Totti - Di Vaio
Di Livio - De Rossi - Aquilani - Candreva
Grosso - Di Bartololmei - Nesta - Tassotti
Masetti

You tend to hear them on local media interviews and commentators like to mention such things. Given the high level of accent diversity in the UK it's easy for natives to identify where players come from. Ashton has statues of the 3 World Cup winners that were born there.

There are also resources like this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Footballers_from_Greater_Manchester

There are many clues...

Greater Paris, I'm sure someone else can do a better job here:
Areola,
Sagna, Gallas, Benatia, Mendy
Kante Pogba Rabiot
Mahrez Mbappe Henry

Subs: GK? Sakho, Kimpembe, Coman, Ben Arfa, Martial, Anelka

Tried to do one for my home town of Nottingham. Can't do a full lineup:

GK?
LB? - Steve Chettle - Wes Morgan - Viv Anderson
Steve Hodge - Jermaine Jenas - Tom Huddlestone - Jermaine Pennant
Andy Cole - Chris Sutton

Andy Cole and Jenas being the highlights I guess.

Newcastle's (/Ashington's!) must be pretty good no?

Keegan Shearer
Beardsley
Jackie Milburn Carrick B.Charlton
Jack Milburn J.Charlton S.Bruce J.Adamson
Eric Steele? Fraser Forster?

I realise some of these weren't technically born in Newcastle, does Ashington count?

Made a (greater) Brussels one with active players only:

GK: Urko Pardo

CB: Vincent Kompany
CB: Jason Denayer
CB: Dedryck Boyata

CM: Marouane Fellaini
CM: Youri Tielemans
RWB: Alexis Saelemaekers
LWB: Yannick Carrasco

LW: Adnan Januzaj
RW: Dodi Lukebakio

ST: Michy Batshuayi

Could probably hold their own in the Prem aside from the GK.

I'm sure Robbo would be disappointed not to have made your cut!

I think Sao Paulo, Rio, Amsterdam and Buenos Aires sure are the most important cities of football history in terms of spawning talent.

If you look at certain huge clubs, the two Milanos, Juve, Manchester Utd, Real M, Barça, Bayern, etc. their legacy is built around a selection of great players from the province (not necessarily the city centre-metropolitan areas-adjacent towns), and key national and foreign signings.

Paris is currently surpassing all of them, dominating global talent production right now and for the foreseeable future.
