France where dominant like no team before in a world cup? Thought they were largely cack honestly. And Pogba the 2nd most iconic French NT player? Silly Goose.
1. Most dominating final match performance, led by PP. But obviously they were strong throughout the tournament.
2. Easily. Who else, Henry? More impressive club career perhaps (Paul chose to come back to struggling United to help us get back to the top), but never as dominating for NT as Paul.

PP was the leader of the 2018 WC-winning NT, a team which dominated the final like no other team before - thanks to Paul's stellar performance, just like in those matches leading up to final as well. He's easily the second most iconic French NT player in history, only behind Zidane. And considering Paul's age, there's still plenty of time to become #1.

Platini? With all due respect to classic players, you can't compare them to modern footballers (from 90s onwards). The overall level of quality was laughable back in Platini's era, clueless defending and snail's pace.
Just a very ignorant comment regarding “classic” (whatever that means) players. Football has certainly changed in regards to rules, prep, fitness and the pace of the game. But why couldn’t Platini, to use your example, played at a faster pace and been fitter had he had the benefit of working under modern systems? The answer is, of course he could have. Furthermore, skilful players back in the days of yore, had to deal with some serious rough house treatment, whereas today they are extremely well protected by referees. Two footed tackles, excessive force, tackles from behind etc. Plus they did it with worse balls, on worse pitches etc, etc.

We're a bunch of bottlers. 2010 it was Cassilas' toe in 78 it waz the post and in 74 it was us thinking heh piece of cake after scoring the 1-0 before the Germans even touched the ball.
Pretty much this. Holland is the Juventus of NT football: tears in a final.

In 1998, I actually consider Brazil and France better teams than Holland '98.

This is what everyone says, "what if they had contemporary fitness coaches, nutrition etc." Yeah maybe they'd be as good as Pogba, maybe not. They were great players of previous eras and ahead of their time, but shouldn't be considered equal to players with superior skill, fitness and tactical understanding. Football is more demanding than ever and any random 3rd division team has more quality than most of Platini's or Pele's opponents.
The only pre-90s player who would live up to his reputation and compete against Ronaldo, Messi, Pogba or Salah is Maradona. Maybe a little slow for modern standards, but his skill was unbelievable.

Bang on mate. I would break into a sweat trying to improve those. Maybe Sorin over Heinze. Especially love your Dutch team.

That's the harsh truth if you're willing to take off your nostalgia goggles. I'm all for respecting the classic footballers, but actually comparing them to modern world beaters like Pogba? Lets not be silly. Mediocre sh*t like Lingard with his 2019 stamina and pace would demolish 70s teams on his own.

I think the 82 Italy side is the most underrated side ever, not the best but once they clicked into gear against a great Brazil side they never looked back.

The 82 WC was an alltime classic WC with great teams playing great football - Brazil. Italy. France. Germany. The 2018 WC was missing Italy and Holland. It showcased a desperately bad German team. One of the poorest Argentinian teams. A very dull,, ordinary Brazil. A very dull, ordinary Spain. All France had to do was be consistent and effective and that's what they were. Winners of a poor quality WC.

@Welby5 - totally agree with your Platini / PP comparison.

@Halal Jalal - serious question but did you ever see Platini play? PP is not even close to the standards set by Platini

The only pre-90s player who would live up to his reputation and compete against Ronaldo, Messi, Pogba or Salah is Maradona. Maybe a little slow for modern standards, but his skill was unbelievable.
And secondly to say that Maradona is the only pre 90's player on a level with Pogba is a ridiculous assumption in my opinion.

Give me a Laudrop, Gullit, Matthaus, Rijkaard, Gascoigne, Van Basten, Baggio, Zico, Stoichkov, Hagi to name but a few pre 90's players off the top of my head that I would instantly take over PP.

These players were consistently awesome, PP (imvho) unfortunately is not.

Lets not be silly. Mediocre sh*t like Lingard with his 2019 stamina and pace would demolish 70s teams on his own.
I respect your opinion but I absolutely can't agree with the Lingard comparison. I know it's easy to get lost in nostalgia but seriously, Lingard demolishing teams of the 70's is pushing the boundaries of believability don't you think?

I'll attempt a Wales one:

Southall
Gunter Coleman Williams Davies
Speed Ramsey
Bale ---------------- Giggs
Rush Hughes

The defence is shocking, but that front four scares the piss out of anybody.

Didn't you lot beat Brazil 3-0 in 98?

And regarding this France team, I really didn't see one standout player, just a collective of extremely good players. It's by no means a one man team led by Pogba. His dressing room speech was nice and all, but led by Pogba? Bit of a stretch to me.

Also, Platini, very obviously Platini is more iconic. Like, 20 times as iconic, easily.

Pretty much this. Holland is the Juventus of NT football: tears in a final.

In 1998, I actually consider Brazil and France better teams than Holland '98.
France perhaps, but we should've beaten Brazil. Think they were the worst of the 3. Still, fine margins of course, but if there was ever a time to win it for us it was then. Well actually it was 74, but I wasn't around then, so I don't have particularly strong feelings about 74.

Pogba is half the player Platini was. Platini was the best player of his generation after Maradona and arguably the best French player of all time alongside Zidane. Pogba is barely in the top 10 players of this generation really.

My favourite national team is the Brazil 82 team although I will admit I wasn't even alive at the time. The France 98 team and Spain 2010 were the best I've watched live.

Spain 2010 for me, if you want to add international players just add Messi to it. They would have won 2010 final more comfortably except for the fact the Netherlands were allowed to kick them off the pitch. Lucky for them no VAR in those days...

It's pretty much just the Barcelona team with couple of other players in it, most international teams suffer as they don't play together much. Not the case with this team which is a big reason Spain won everything between 08 and 12.
