The Premier League ’s so-called ‘Big Six’ could be at risk from a two-year ban from European competitions as UEFA consider punishments for the clubs who formed the European Super League.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester Citywere part of the 12 teams who attempted a breakaway from UEFA just over a fortnight ago.

They immediately faced a huge backlash from fans, pundits and even players, with all six English clubs stating they would be pulling out within 48 hours of the original announcement.

Though they have announced their intention to withdraw, officially that has not yet happened, with competition chairman Florentino Perez continuing to state that the competition will go ahead.

But many are now pushing for UEFA and the Premier League to deal out heavy punishments to the clubs who were involved in an effort to deter any future attempts to break away.

And ESPN reports that one of the punishments the European governing body is considering is a two-year Champions League and Europa League ban.

It would be the strongest sanction available to UEFA with the clubs, who are all usual fixtures in the competitions, barred from taking part.

While this sanction is believed to be used to pressure Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventusand AC Milan to also pull out of the Super League, it could still be used on the clubs who do not officially withdraw.

The four aforementioned clubs continue to remain in the breakaway competition, seeing their position as strong enough to escape any punishment.

But UEFA are aiming to see as many clubs as possible withdraw and can point to Article 51 of their statues in order to back up any punishment.

The article states: “No combinations or alliances between... clubs affiliated, directly or indirectly, to different UEFA Member Associations may be formed without the permission of UEFA.”

ESPN does also state that the English sides have been in negotiations with UEFA over an agreement to be given a lighter punishment once they formally withdraw from the Super League.

Nobody will be banned.

UEFA aren't going to damage their own product.

Won't happen, I'd just do a point deduction.

UEFA get the benefit of getting TV money from the big boys playing while punishing them by making it much harder for any of them to win the tournament. It could even make the group stage more exciting as they'd have to probably win every match to make sure they go through.

Spurs' punishment can be delayed until they get back into Europe.

Yeh there is zero chance of that happening to English sides.

Even Real, Barca and Juve will be fine so long as they eventually shelve the SL.

The tabloids really are ridiculous. SHOCKING HEADLINE!! followed by poorly written explanation of why the headline isn't actually true.

If we get banned for 2 years we should form a mini league of the banned clubs and play midweek when we should be playing in Europe..

We need a name for this league.

That’s what I thought.

“How dare you try and break away from UEFA and form your own tournament! As punishment we’re going to force you out of UEFA and make you form your own tournament (for 2 years...). That’ll teach you!”

I’ll say it again... put them all in the same 3 CL groups for the next 5 years if they want to play each other so much.

It’s a long term punishment that doesn’t see fans suffer.

UEFA/FIFA will fade into more and more irrelevance as any sort of governing body. At least when it comes to top clubs and competitions. They already are and have been for some time incompetent at what they're supposed to be for

Yet El Plastico goes ahead even though they actually financially cheated continuously to gain an advantage. The ESL clubs, as odious as their idea was, only planned it (partially because of oil clubs ruining the game, in addition to greed).

They couldn’t ban Man City, one club, for even 1 year the imbeciles but yes they will ban more than one club now, yes, safe.

If they do, they will have all the broadcasters demanding money back from what they paid for the rights

Just take away CL from either City or Chelsea this season, that will do more than enough damage.

Yeah won’t happen.

Listen the big six were dicks about this Super League but let’s not pretend that the existing competitions don’t need those clubs more than the big 6 need them.

After all that exact fact is why the super league got off the ground in the first place. If not for fan backlash it would be happening and these comps would be in dire straights.

There wont be any bans. Im sure I read all the clubs signed was a statement of intent. Not actually forgoing their FIFA / UEFA affiliation.

Lot of piss and wind from ESPN again.

Chelsea (the saviours of football) fan.
They should kick Man City out of this year's tourney. Chelsea shouldn't get punished as they were just blamelessly caught up in what was clearly a Manchester based scheme.

I cant remember who else is left in the Champs League but in all fairness they should be awarded the trophy.

Let's face it, there is feck all difference between the ESL proposal and the new Champions League format.

Token fines and a warning, with UEFA changing rules to ensure that they continue to be the biggest benefactors from the Champions League.

City were banned, they aren't even supposed to be in CL.

It's a hilarious story- the UEFA/FIFAs punishment for not allowing clubs to leave the C.L - is to make them leave the C.L. Yes that would make so much sense

I think not :)
