Are you watching closely?
Clearly an instance of ignorance and not racism. He's clearly not the brightest dude. Expect the twitterverse to explode in a tsunami of indignant fury though.

'Racist' really has lost all meaning these days. Just a reminder of what 'racist' actually means.

  1. a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.
"I had a fear of being called a racist"
synonyms: racial bigot, racialist, xenophobe, chauvinist; More

adjective
  1. 1.
showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another.

Who did his make up? If he's done that himself got to say I am impressed. Even better than Gene Wilder's effort in Silver Streak.

According to this thread, it not only makes you racist, but staggeringly stupid and ignorant.
That was directed at Griezmann, not any of the posters here, so don't get your knickers in a twist.

Unlike some posters here who are genuinely unfamiliar with this, Griezmann obviously isn't or why dress up like this?

How are there English adults on here claiming to either not know what blackface is or not knowing its offensive? and people have the nerve to mock the intelligence of the posters on Bluemoon. Truly embarrassing.

Because he wanted to look like a basketball player.

Griezmann is really stupid there but I doubt he meant any harm.

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this ("he has black friends, not racist etc etc")but Griezmann seems to hang out with a lot of black dudes and is insanely into Black American culture for whatever reason. I follow him on snapchat and Instagram. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

At the end of the day though, black face in a historical context is racism. I don't see the debate in this.

Your right. Fifa should ban Griezmann, racist scum.

Is Griezmann racist? No.

He's probably just unknowledgeable of the history of blackface. Not surprising... He's European.

I'm not sure what good the Twitter response has done anyone though.

Not sure how anyone can say there's nothing wrong with it. At the very least it's crass.

I think Griezmann did this out of more ignorance than hate but, the whole "he has black friends" defense is never a good defense. There is people with black spouses and kids who still have racist views.

Guess this means #agentP won't want to talk to Griezmann anymore.

He deleted the "NBA tweet" and just tweeted this
"I agree that it's awkward for me. If I hurt some people excuse me."

Hopefully he's learned his lesson.

I realize that. But in this case, I don't believe Griezmann meant any harm.

I really do pity caucasian people these days, can't do something innocently without the sins of people in the past whom you've no connection to, coming back to bite you.
Yeah those caucasions are so oppressed, not being able to go out of there way way to offend minorities

Yeah kinda, 75% of NBA players are black. When most people think of a basketball player they think of a black person.
There was plenty of White NBA All Stars in the 80s. And he could dress up like a black NBA player without resorting to blackface.

All of this could have been avoided if he had simply put on the outfit and fake afro. Everyone would have known what his costume was.

Spain loves basketball too, he could choose between any popular player from Madrid alone but he thought it would be funny to dress up like a black man.

What do you mean by this? Do you genuinely think there's a small chance that Griezmann feels he's superior to black people? (Being racist that is )

How are people here so stupid, do you know the history of blackface and what it represents, stop acting like there is nothing wrong with this
I find it hard to believe there are people in these times that aren't aware of it tbh, I figured the history of racial discrimination was covered in education worldwide. The reason I, a POC, don't find this as offensive as others (although I understand the outrage) is probably due to the fact that this isn't based on stereotypes (huge lips, jet black skin, etc) and so I don't view it as him mocking black people. Assuming he's picked out a specific black basketballer, this looks to me like him just attempting to look as similar as he can to them (his skin tone and features aren't exaggerated in a way most blackfaces were). He isn't the brightest of people, but his intentions here seem pretty innocent. The context of it being for a costume party does make a difference too. It's not as if this was a film where they overlooked black actors in favour of blackface white actors, or AG has stated that he's now black, so the link to the past isn't very strong. Obviously, not everyone feels the same way, but this is more plain stupid than racist to me. Although, if he's just dressing up as a generic basketball player, then racism would come into it.

EDIT: Could you move this mods?

You'd think someone like him, who's very marketable and probably has a team of PR, would be better advised.

I don't think Greizmann is racist for putting on black face (even though in a historical context, it represents white supremacy and the dehumanization of black people), thats what I mean by giving him some leeway. He should just apologize for it and move on.

I agree with you man. I'm just disappointed at comments from people saying 'I don't find this racist' about something clearly not about them. Also at the people who not only can't see why painting your skin dark in this context could be racist but can't even look up online why this could be offensive instead of posting they don't understand. I'm not offended by this on a personal level myself, but I am empathetic towards people who would be because I know why. Ignorance is dumb (Griezmann) but then to see even more ignorance after he has been called out.. that is just pathetic.

EDIT: Yes move this please the thread changed
