“ Premier League players' names will be replaced on the back of their shirts with 'Black Lives Matter' for the first 12 matches of the restarted season.

The Premier League will also support any player who chooses to 'take a knee' before or during matches.”

I think this is a great idea.
It is for a great cause.
It will also be used to spot any idiots.

The irony when some old white referee books the wrong black player because the names have been removed from the back of their shirts.

Imagine the irony if David White had been sent off for kicking Kingsley Black

Good stuff. I’m glad they support the ones in advance as it’s absolutely something a lot of players will be doing anyway. This fits in well with other anti-racism efforts ongoing in football.

I’m quite worried for, like, the Burnley subs when 5 of them come on. I couldn’t put names to faces that deep in a mid table squad.

If only there was some kind of unique numbers they could each be assigned.

Oh yeah! Haha I totally forgot. What are the rules of football again? It’s rugby union but without the wing forwards yeah?

I'm sure they are all out there.

Brilliant statement by the premier league.

Certainly is. Hopefully with this movement happening we will start seeing some more black coaches getting involved in football off the back of it.
Agreed! More diversity is always a great thing! Extremely proud of the prem for doing this.

What about all the fans that have paid good money to put the name of their favorite player on the back of his shirt only to see him wear a different name!?!? /s

In all seriousness good. Keep this movement going and going and going.

FIFA does not allow "political statements or slogans on kits". I wonder if they'll be tone deaf enough to question "Black Lives Matter" on shirts.

I also wonder if clubs will sell these shirts with profits going appropriate charities. I bet tons would want to support.

On one hand it seems to me a bit of a silly look. The prem' and the big clubs have so often turned their backs on their people and communities in the chase for corporate profit.

On the other hand it is exactly these institutions that need to be held accountable. We should be going after community built organisations, councils, politicians and businesses that operate within our communities. They should represent the people and reflect our values, and not because it helps them maintain marketability but because they have a civil duty to do so.

I'm wondering if they've simply co-opted the slogan or are they planning to donate and work directly with groups that operate under the "Black Lives Matter" banner.

I hope this is just the start.

Sorry for the ignorance but what does "taking a knee" before or during matches mean?

Colin Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL, began a silent protest against police brutality in America several years ago by taking a knee during the national anthem (we insist on playing it before every sporting event) and he was summarily blacklisted by the league because of it. He's yet to play another game since his contract expired.

He developed this protest after talk with veterans to ensure that it wasn't offensive, but the political right in America (of course) immediately said he was doing it to insult the troops and disrespect America. It kicked off a huge shitstorm where sponsors were threatening to pull their money, Donald Trump called Kaepernick a 'son of a bitch' and teams were threatening their players against participating in any form of protest. Eventually they allowed them to stay in the locker room until after the anthem finished and it kind of petered out from there. It carried over to other sports, including the US national teams (I believe the women's team initially) to the point where US Soccer put out an official policy that players had to stand for the anthem (it was rescinded this week).

That's a tl;dr but we've had massive fecking issues with police brutality for a long time.

Surprised the "Sports should stick to sports" poster hasn't shown his head yet. Seems they learning to hide it better.

Regardless, it's a great move, and glad it is not seen as a "political" thing but seeing for what it is, a stand of solidarity for basic human rights.

They allow poppys. Equality shouldn't be called a political issue. It's a basic human right.

It's a political issue because it's a basic human right.

The Prem sometimes allow political stuff, if they agree with the politics.

As I (and every other sane person) also agrees with the stuff the prem has (Rainbow laces for LGBT equality, now this BLM on the back of shirts) I don't have an issue with it.

The one thing I have against this is that the movement has been pretty violent. Six police (including two black people) have been killed, quite a few people have been beaten terribly, and a lot of people's livelihoods have been destroyed. I am not a supporter of ruining innocent people's lives. All lives matter.

It’s not an organised movement with registers and employees, the message of the movement doesn’t get drowned out by the horrible actions of less than 0.001% of the people who are part of it. This doesn’t make those crimes less horrific, either, the two things must both be held in mind without the situation becoming a “for or against” narrative, the world is too complex for that. You can hate what that small number of people did and support the much larger number of people out there for their cause in exemplary fashion. It’s obvious which way history will look back on this, more so than in the 60s in the US for instance.

Yup all lives matter so we should carry on making sure black people get treated equally rather than systematically discriminating against them or ruining lives by killing them. Good point well made.

It's a good thing to do but why wait for so so long ? A lot of companies, sadly are using these horrible events just to improve their image.

It all depends on where it goes from here. If a company is jumping on a bandwagon for PR purposes but it actually leads to positive and meaningful change within the organisation, then who cares what the original motive was. If it's solely a facade and there's no deeper change then it's more questionable.

But even the cheap PR moves at least throw more attention on a worthy movement and put more pressure for change on a societal and political level.

If you say all lives matter, you INCLUDE black people and if black people said that that would imply they feel left out. When you say the opposite, and exclude - where do people think it will go to in years to come? Do you think humanity, won't be as dumb as it presently is? Do people really believe, it would just level the playing field? Really? At the end of the day, the premiership don't have to say anything. Why? Because the premiership has plenty of black players in it. Racism will happen at games, and sexism and all that crap but those people are in a heightened sense of euphoria or excitement or agitation. You can be for black people......and against BLM. Personally I don't care because if you invest in everything else, you will never have time for you......or to develop your own ideas based your own experience. I don't believe I said anything offensive here but of course some people will take offense

As people, big corps and interests fight over your attention and what you should think. The idea 'all lives matter' is offensive shows the nature of the beast. Because it excludes NO ONE and can create conversation. When you exclude groups or people and when you see what's going on in America with certain key words......then it's an agenda and one that will not stabilise anything but cause problems in the future because there is evil in ALL races....and good causes can be created and will usually be infiltrated by opportunists with the wrong spirit. So we should look at ourselves more....and learn to listen to our own conscience because some people have one and know right from wrong. These things can in effect, act as shell companies.

You had a lot of companies putting out the BLM message recently and it's like those spam emails you get from time to time. 'We miss you. Come back'. It's all bull. You have to get to the root of the problem. These act as just gimmicks and will change nothing. Anyone thats suffered racism i've empathy for but a lot of good people suffer from the ignorance of others. But it stems from somewhere. As people yes we should JOIN together....but you don't join together creating groups that exclude.....I saw a video recently of a black girl standing up in some room with white people in it and saying...basically she felt uncomfortable about the number of white people their and it was for people of colour. She sounded pretty calm to me but was applauded after for saying it. I'm not seeing how any of this is uniting people. You tell people the truth. You educate people. You engage a conversation. Not really seeing that.

What do you mean by spot any idiots?

I'm little bit confused why PL need to take this stance in this way? While I understand why they are doing I don't know if it is right to do in this way. Political statements are forbidden and this can be seen as political statement in some way. On other hand, human rights are NOT political. They are rights.

Every normal person would agree that any kind of discrimination have nothing to do in this world and everyone should be equal no matter of color, age, sexual preference, religion and so on.

Here comes what worries me. Do we really need sports and in this case Premier League to involve them in this kind of things in this kind of way? Do we think Premier League would have names at the back of the shirts saying "LGBTQ+ people" in some colours for a 1/3 of a season? Or maybe taking stance in some current war where people have been taken their rights from them? Premier League should really think hard before getting into this kind of events because there is a thin line here.

Also, why have they waited so long to give this kind of support? I hope it is not for popularity points they are doing it.

Sadly because the importance of the message erode with political commercialism.

The same goes for some political groups or left wing activists. Many white people I know fully and truly supports BLM. They also supports actions like kneeing before the anthem but they HATE to be connected with (left wing) activists, by government supported media and trend sensitives companies and others who tries to ride on this powerful wave.

I often listen to Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless on Undisputed at FOX. Honest and often painful truthful discussions without any ballooning or BS. Highly recommend them. You can find them on YT.

I don't care about the original motive, genuine or not. Just saying that most companies are in it for their own interest. Just a simple statement. I guess what happened to the Crossfit brand and their former CEO is warning enough

They're at their best when they don't talk about sports, which is funny when you think about it.

But why aren't those people outraged over these other people's deaths? It seems selective outrage.

Two black police officers killed - no outrage

Four white police officers killed - no outrage.

7500 Black people killed by criminals every year in the us - no outrage

White people killed by police (more get killed than black in the US actually, including unarmed) - no outrage

It seems this outrage only exists in one set of circumstances, when you should feel it in all. I do not support a movement that only seems to think lives matter in selective circumstances.
