Even if we sign DM, I would still sign this guy as the backup since McTominay and Fred are not a DM.

It is a sound plan, but I have my doubt he would happily accept a bench role. As free agent, he has plenty of offer and promises to choose for.

Rather than be a bench option, I would say more a utility player. He can cover DM and CB area. And who knows that may be he can also play an inverted full back like how ETH uses his full back especially Blind.

Every player has the right to fight for their position. Nobody is being told ‘we are signing you to sit on the bench’

If he is signed then he will have a very good chance of starting regularly.

I can't claim I know him very well in CB position, but I am pretty certain he's very different from Blind, and he's not outstanding with the ball enough to have any kind of play making impact. He's very close to be specialist defensive midfielder/player than tactical flexible utility player IMO

On principle it should be the way to go. In the scenario from the post I replied to, where a first choice DM gets signed, the player himself may not fancy it.

CB and DM are the position he played the most. I only watched Marseille this season vs Metz, even though he played as DM in that match but his role during defensive transition was very deep like playing as CB in back three in that match and then someone said he was originally actually a centre back.

I’m not saying he’s like Blind. I’m saying that he won’t just sitting on the bench as he could be used as more utility player like CB or DM or may be inverted full back role since ETH uses Blind and Mazraoui as inverted full back who stay deep alongside centre back or DM.

Keep banging on the drum to sign him. We have a lot to do. He is young. He is free. He is very talented. Fbref puts him as the most similar player to Fabinho. He is the exact type of player we need for DM.

Unless we sign Tchouameni, Kamara makes more sense than anyone because of the mix of price, age and quality.

Looks tidy
I’ve seen some stats posted that show how well he plays on the defensive side. What I enjoyed about that video was the majority of his touches displayed progressive passes. We all know we lack that in our midfield so if he is solid in defense and not afraid to play progressive football it seems like a no brained signing him on a free. I’m about to Google how much his currently salary is because I’d imagine he would also be on the cheaper side when all is said and done.

We probably need 4-5 new players in our back 7 so his versatility seems like a huge plus, especially since we have no idea if Ten Hag will play the way Ajax did in 2019 or the way they play now and Ten Hag might now know either yet.

I don't see why signing Kamara would stop us signing Tchouameni, Tchouameni isn't a pure DM. Also considering one is on a free and we are losing Pogba and Matic at least, we should be looking to try and get them both in. Whether or not they'd want to join us is another matter mind.

We need diverse options in midfield. The more quality we can get in the better. As long as we don’t offer astronomical wages I think signing players on free is value add. If we can buy two midfielders and add one for free we should be in a much better position. I’m not sure if ETH is going to play with a 2 or 3 man midfield but having 6 players with different but complimentary attributes is a good thing.

It shouldnt. Especially on a free. This is how you build a squad but we never seem to do it.

He is the perfect profile of DM for us, he ticks all the boxes. Young, solid defensively, good on the ball, and a free agent.

His style of play reminds me of Carrick, but he seems more combative.

He is also a lot less progressive. Also quite a bit less attacking than a young Carrick. While a young Carrick was closer to a 10 than a 6, Kamara came from CB.

True true. I was comparing him more to an older Carrick. He is definitely more combative, but his passing is not as good. But from what I've seen, his passing range is good, and he always passes forward, and makes himself available. He always has a high volume of passes, playing like the metronome. And he is just 22.

Partially agree, I think he is technically very good at holding and shielding the ball (in a different way to Matic). Also think he makes an impact on the ball like Keane/Rice often do/did....he has good vision around him to move the ball on quickly and keep a move flowing, and his weight of pass over 10-15 yards is very good something the mentioned players rarely get credit for (Keane for one had a brilliant weight of short pass which was barely ever mentioned). I think his passing isnt creative like a Carrick for example, but that doesnt worry me, we need a central midfielder that is defensive and can keep play moving as we simply dont have one once Matic has gone, Kamara is already one of the better players about for that, he is also young with a lot of room to improve and evolve and he is FREE

Kamara is very much a defensive midfielder, Tchouameni not seen enough of to really comment.....but even if we do sign two defensive midfieldrs, I dont see how that is a bad thing as some are saying?

With the probably exits our remaining midfielders.....Fernandes, VDB, Hannibal, Fred, McTominay, Garner....regardless of peoples opinions on them, still a lot of options and NONE of them are defensive midfielders, they are all box to box or attackign midfielders, we already have them so adding two options to the defensive midfield side is no bad thing anyway, we already have more creative options

Completed passes x passes under pressure.
Lovely little scatter there but worth pointing out the Kamara isn’t the most progressive with the ball he’s as I said before really tidy with it won’t lose control often.

For a free transfer it’s something I’d be very happy with.

Indeed:

Progressive passes per 50 passes x progressive passes per 90.

Would be a very good deal for us on a free transfer. If we lose one or both or Jones/Bailly even more so as he can play CB also.

We should really be looking at players like him and Eriksen this summer. We can get him and Eriksen to replace players like Maric and Mata for very little.

Yeah him & Eriksen would be shrewd deals

I think he's considerable inferior to Aurelien Tchouameni as a DM. He's also weak in the defensive transition at getting back goal side in a high line. The article above highlights the areas of concern, and his lack of pace/physicality is seen as a weakness against the opposition transition/counter. That would be a big problem in the EPL and we'd need a extra player to help out in that regard.

Getting linked via Twitter itks tonight.

Would be a good signing on free allowing us to focus on other positions. Good ball retention and moves the ball on quickly, also has a decent ping in his locker to spread the play a bit. Hopefully the sort of shrewd signing we will be looking at now.

I don’t want us to sign any player simply because they are free. If he would be a genuine target, the it’s a fantastic opportunity. Unless it was short-term and we were prepared to go for who we really wanted later.

If you had to have Kamara in your team, what sort of mid would you ideally pair him with?

If I had to have him in my team then I wouldn't change my approach to playing the game. And that approach would be to create a team dynamic where I can create conditions for the team to impose their game on the opposition in a compact high block, which would enable the team to play the game in the opponents half. And that's what I believe ten Hag will look to do.

I would still look to pair Kamara up with two creative #8s, in a 4-3-3 formation. But i'd have to raise the level of my fullbacks where I'd want at least one fullback to give me the half back option (inverted fullback) to maintain defensive structure against the opposition transition. Ideally I'd also like to raise the level of the CBs in defensive transition but that might be asking for too much in one window. So someone like Timber to tuck in as support for Kamara on the turnover, would be something I can see ten Hag doing.

Kamara could be like a bonus signing though seen as though he’s a free agent. I’d say he would be more long term with him only being 22 and it gives us more options in the middle of the pitch. Could be matic replacement and the guy from Monaco could be pogbas replacement.

This would be how I would get him in. Improving the full backs would be essential, as we could be a back 3 in possession, high up the pitch - but the passing and retention would need to be far better than it is from our full backs currently.

Bench to whom exactly? If he turns out semi decent, he will easily start considering what we have as options.

The problem with this is what you said in your last post, he doesn't perform too well against a counter, which is how teams tend to line up against us more often than not.

We'd also have to use a defensive minded winger also if we were to use a full back as a half back, which would limit us going forward.

I'd just rather not sign him as we've signed too many square pegs in round holes before, if it means we wait until next summer to sign the right profile of player, then so be it.
