He didn't have a good game though. I honestly thought it was odd that Ole replaced TFM first because TFM was getting in better positions compared to Williams. He wasn't helping out the attack at all. Shaw isn't some great attacking player either, but he gets in positions which help out Rashford.
I don't see how anyone could be surprised that people thought he was poor. Almost the entire team was.
It's all relative. I thought TFM was having an awful game.
A lot of criticism about William is that he kept drifting inwards, but I'm pretty sure that is the manager's instruction to create space on the wing for Rashford. Shaw does the same in some games too. Against WestHam, I think the idea is to isolate their right back against Rashford. Unfortunately, Marcus was having a bad game too.
Defensively, Williams had both good and bad moments. It seems that the bad moments stick out more for some people. I thought he was ok, decent-ish. Considering his age, I focus more on the mental aspect of him recovering from the previous game. In the context of the game, he was also not among the worst performers. Pogba, Rashford and Bruno were. I would also include TFM but he only played one half.
For the record, my opinion of Williams is he can be a useful squad player for us. I'm not of the view that he can be our long term left back. Prob someone similar to Phil Neville in the past.
Edit: yes Shaw is a much better player butt probably even more maligned than Williams here. If fit, I'll always prefer him over Williams.
