I watched all games of Brazil in the 1970 World Cup. Brazil vs Peru in the quarter-finals was the best match, offensive football and positive intent from both teams, technically great, a delight that Brazil won 4-2 due to being the technically superior team by a good margin, but Peru gave a good account of themselves. Brazil's second best match was against Czechoslovakia, the first match of the group stage, winning 4-1. Brazil really shined technically and were clearly superior, though the defense was insecure throughout the game and created a few good chances for Czechoslovakia. The defense was never that team's strongest suit, but the quality in midfield and attack helped to compensate for that, and also how well the team was positioned without the ball, even Pelé contributed a lot defensively. In the 3-2 victory against Romania, Brazil was great in the first 20 minutes, opened 2-0 and then relaxed in the rest of the game because that was the last game in the group stage and Brazil was virtually guaranteed in quarter-final. The final against Italy was a nervous, even and cagey match in the first half, then Brazil destroyed in the second and amazing goals and amazing football happened.

Brazil's toughest games were against Uruguay, in the semifinals, and England, the second game of the group stage. Technically, Uruguay was vastly inferior to Brazil, but the trauma of 1950 and the pressure really affected the players. Most of Brazil's players, even Pelé, played well below average against Uruguai, mainly in the first half. Uruguay also defended solidly, individually marked Gérson (Brazil's main creative midfielder) and were quite violent. They wanted to make the match as nervous, tense and scrappy as they could and Brazil fell victim to that in the first half. Too many poor passes, unreconizable, Brazil's first shot was only at minute 27. Brazil was able to draw in the last minute of the first half, an amazing assist by Tostão (one of the few brazilian players that were having a decent match up until then) to a great run by Clodoaldo who scored. If I'm not mistaken, Zagallo, Brazil's coach, was furious with the team's performance at the dressing room, asking the players if they had forgotten how to play great football. Brazil was able to shake off most of the nervousness, Uruguay tired and Brazil were well in control and dominated the match for the second half, though not at their absolute best. It was clear that it was the psychological pressure against Uruguay that made the match so tough because Brazil was miles ahead of that Uruguay team. But Uruguay knows how to make tough and nervous games.

Brazil's hardest game in the World Cup was against England, no doubt. Brazil only 1-0. Brazil wasn’t good in the first half, quite bad actually, and England was superior. In the second half, the game was even and both Brazil and England created many great chances. Brazil eventually won with a goal that came from fantastic play at the edge of England's box, a goal that showed what Brazil was truly capable of technically. Tostão, who had been doing a bad match until then, was the main responsible of that great play, but Pelé's fast decision-making to pass the ball to Jairzinho to score was also total beautiful simplicity. Overall, Brazil was heavily criticized back at home (Pelé was considered decadent and washed up, the defense was heavily criticized, people wondered how could 5 number 10 players work together as a cohesive unit, Gérson's bad performances in 66 still weighted much against him in the public's perception), many people said that they wouldn't even get out of the group stage. Defeating England in that game was a HUGE boost of confidence to the players. From then on, they knew that they could win the title and silence the critics. The match against England was also the only match in that World Cup that Brazil didn't truly dominate or control the adversary in any moment of the game. That victory was truly crucial. That England was quite unlucky to not even reach the semi-finals, they were better than in 66 and strong favorites to the title.
