I expect Brighton under Potter will be very similar to Bournemouth under Howe; play some nice stuff most weeks but always prone to leaking goals which will ultimately leave you around lower mid-table. That is not necessarily a bad thing and I am sure you’d take it for the next few seasons.
What I find interesting is that there are some very similar sized clubs in the league now with very different approaches that, other than the odd purple patch, seem to stay bunched together in the final table. I put the likes of us both, Burnley, Bournemouth, Watford, Southampton and Newcastle within that and you can easily divide those teams out in to defined playing styles, but we all finish in a cluster which says to me that the right way of playing is the one that achieves the best results. All this talk of good football only goes so far, so he does need to pick up some results soon.
What also remains to be seen is how much Uncle Tony will be willing to back Potter in the future as well. For all the grief we get on Northstandchat (I am a lurker
) about our wage bill Bloom has chucked A LOT of money at Brighton, probably an unsustainable amount relative to the income of the club. It’s a similar story at Bournemouth too, they blow a fortune every year on new players; way in excess of what they could afford without a Rich Russian backing them. Typically speaking the kind of players they need for their style cost much more than the kind in Burnley’s squad for example. Can Brighton sustain that kind of spending every year?
