I'm seeing something about him likely to be played deeper with Cunha and Mbeumo ahead... Can he be coached to be disciplined enough to play that role at this age, or is it going to be loads of the daft flicks on the edge of our own box stuff and Hollywood balls from even deeper?

Still the man to watch! The heartbeat of the team. Love to see it.

Will be good to see him link up with attackers and players that can actually play football!

Well well well... New thread, new fun...

Really hope we aren't done for the summer in terms of midfield acquisitions.

We will struggle with him in midfield.
Play him as a 10 or don't play him fullstop. However we know he's playing every game algjis season and most probably as a DM. Seriously we should have pushed for his move to Saudi, we'll never get offered 100m for a player again.

Can already see the “Should have sold him to Saudi” line is going to be repeated 10,000,000 times this season.

I suspect that will be the overwhelming feeling over the course of the season.

But most likely this is what should have happened. We all know he is not a midfielder and never will be

Didnt he play it often last season?

Bruno and Cunha as a 10 and Mbeumo up front would be a big improvement if we can buy a CM, arguably more important than buying a striker.

As things stand, this would be my preference. I doubt the plan was to spend 65m on Mbeumo to play him out of position, however if we start the season poorly then I think Amorim will stick Bruno further forward and play a more defensive minded midfield pairing.

Have there been many players with an elite reputation like his that no big clubs ever express an interest in, or the player never pushes for a move to a team befitting their reputation where they can contest for league titles or at the very least the knockouts of the champions league?

Seems odd that a player of his reputation has played at a level beneath his level for so long without either wanting to leave or being sought after by a big team.

Alan Shearer at Newcastle.

Bayern and Barca last season both went for him, think there were rumours of PSG at one stage too

Him not wanting to leave isn’t a negative, he believes he can make a difference and wants United to succeed

Oh no but didn't you know that loyalty = lack of ambition and our unwillingness to sell him = nobody wants him?!

I love Bruno but I confess I am not a big fan of this CM role. The best part of Bruno’s game is unlocking defences and creating G+A. The CM role require disciplined distribution and Bruno is a risk taker.

I hope he can modify is game. He does have legs, commitment and range of distributor, which will help.

He’s playing for Manchester fecking United, man.

This thread is just perennially weird, every single year for half a decade he's our best player irrespective of manager, system, the role asked of him... every year strange posts trying to minimise his impact

Reading the Rashford stuff about moving on in his career whilst we all know the issues with effort all whilst being paid handsomely for it makes me so happy we've still got Bruno.

No matter how rubbish we've been, he's always run himself into the ground. He's an icon of this era and I'm glad he's still with us.

We've effectively paid £100m and what, £300k/week(?) to play him in central midfield next to Casemiro or Ugarte; what can possibly go wrong?

I’d say there’s 90%+ agreement we wish he went

He didn’t want to go, it’s that simple

Let’s not ruminate on a decision we didn’t own and couldn’t force him to make

I'd definitely say this baseless estimation is bollocks

Sorry, how have we paid 100m?
Edit: as a qualifier, what do you think 'effectively' means?

Who cares, most attentive watchers know he’s not right for this system. My point wasn’t about that, it’s about the fact we couldn’t force him to say yes to an offer he didn’t want - which many people are implicitly suggesting we could

I think he is the best penalty taker I've ever seen.

Amorim wanted him to stay and that's why Bruno stayed.

I think it's fair to say Amorim knows his own system more than any of us.

That second goal was pure technique. Almost insulting to the opposition how easy he can make it look at times.

Amorim wanted him to stay and that's why Bruno stayed.

Just to be clear, that’s not why he stayed. Bruno had an offer and made a decision. It was his decision - not Amorim’s.

He cited many inputs: level of competition, family input, the club’s input, the manager’s input, and of course his own goals. But let’s not try and pretend Amorim made up his mind for him. Think this makes it pretty clear:

“The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.”

Exactly, the club didn't want him to go.

You look at how the club has treated Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho as players that have been told to leave - the club themselves said that they want to keep Bruno.

It's not really that complicated.

The club said they wanted him. The manager said they wanted him. Ultimately he decided he wanted to stay too because he had the option to do so which other players like Garnacho and Rashford do not.

It's amazing how a goal changes perception.

I'm a fan of Bruno but that was a scruffy game from him.

A nice finish for the second goal but that was really his only moment of quality.
