Not to nit pick as he is fantastic but has his goals from open play dipped quite a bit? Although he did play deeper for half the year

Nah nothing to worry about. Bruno has never been much of a scorer. Particularly from open play. He’s an assists guy from open play and dead ball.

Goals from open play in the prem is consistent and wouldn’t be much of an issue if you removed his open play goals…his totals since he joined are merely:

4
9
8
8
8
5
5

No major dip there it’s consistently low. He the assist master. Especially from dead balls. Genius.

I think he's probably not as accurate getting it on target or testing the keeper as much as a player of his quality should be.

He scored 19 goals the season before, but he had 20 more games to do that in.
In terms of PL goals he scored about the same amount last season as he always does.
So it was basically because we were out of Europe and got knocked out of the cups early.

Yeah, I sometimes wish people should stop discussing how good a captain he is by looking at him waving his arms and complaining to the ref. How he communicates to the other players, what he does on the pitch, how he busts his lungs every single game even when others are standing still, and how he seems to be the one to keep in touch with ex-players, new arrivals etc so ensure they are doing well - that's leadership, it's friendship, and it's just plain good human nature. To me, he seems like an excellent captain. A good leader doesn't need to shout and be aggressive at all time; that's a rather old fashioned way of looking at leadership.

He has matured and changed over time, it has to be said. He’s grown into a captain and that’s to his credit. The armband does that to some.

Worrying he's only got 1+1 left on his contract. I'd be offering him a job for life!

He most likely has, as most people mature in their twenties. However, I also feel that he received a fair deal of unjustified criticism particularly by the English pundits because of his body language, which I think is an incorrect way of judging him both as a player and as a captain.

I think it's the same with Ødegaard. Just because he is the quiet type doesn't mean that he's not a great leader. On here, many seem to argue that Arsenal need a proper leader. What the hell is a proper leader? Everyone at Arsenal seem to rave about how great a captain he is, and the tune is exactly the same for the national team.

One of my football hot takes is that being a good captain off the pitch (pre game, post game, on the training ground, in the media and in private) is FAR more important than being a good captain on the pitch. And an even hotter continued take is that people overestimate the importance of the latter.

But just to make it clear: I don't think Bruno is a bad captain on the pitch! I would even argue that he's very good. But off the pitch he's arguably as close to perfection as it gets.

I think that’s a difficult take. Or should be for a United fanbase at least.

What you’re doing there is downplaying the importance of a Bryan Robson, an Eric Cantona and a Roy Keane. These three players had leadership front and centre of their attributes and we as a club benefited immensely from this on the pitch.

Robbo inspired FA Cup wins in an era where the cup final itself was the biggest day in the football diary. A royal event. Three of them, multiple times he downed our greatest rivals and the greatest side in Europe in that era in the Scouse’s. He destroyed Maradonna’s Barcelona through talent and fearless leadership.

Cantona’s leadership transformed the club from also rans to an era of dominance. He led with such authority and swagger it elevated all other players. Two doubles, four league titles (five in six for him personally) we wilted without him and flourished on his return. You can’t win anything with kids? You can when they are led by a king.

Keane. Perhaps the greatest captain in terms of setting standards and leading by example there’s been. His performance in Turin brought us a European cup final and it was remarkable. He, like Robbo and king Eric, dragged others with him. His sheer will to win matched only by the gaffers. Doubles, trebles, 3 in a row titles. A phenomenal leader on the pitch and yes it mattered. A LOT.

No Bruno isn’t in their league as a captain, very few ever have been so it’s hardly unique. But diminishing the value of Robson, Cantona and Keane seems very player fc.

First of all, I didn't say that in-game captaincy is unimportant or that Bruno is a better overall captain than those you mentioned. Just to get that out of the way.

A captain spends roughly 90 minutes per week on the pitch on average over the course of a full year. And they are mainly busy playing football during those 90 minutes. The amount of captain-specific actions you are able to do on the pitch pale in comparison to all the hours on the training ground etc. That is why I think what you do off the pitch matters more. Especially these days where being a scrappy hot-head wont do you any favors with the referee. I also think players are more professional these days, which reduces the need for constant, loud corrections. Player culture has changed too. Aggression and an abrasive tone might not be as effective these days.

You listen to all the ex players talk about Robbo, Eric and Keane and what made them special. I’m sure they were great in training, off the pitch etc but what is hyped is what they did on the pitch as leaders. What that gave to others. How it inspired trophies.

So no what they did off the pitch was obviously not more important than how they led and inspired on it. We didn’t win the treble because Keane brought the half time oranges.

Bruno is a great player, but these were massively better captains…there’s no doubt about it…it’s also fine, very few ever have been as good as those. It’s not unique to Bruno. Bruno doesn’t have to top every poll and attempting to diminish Robbo, Cantona and Keanes captaincy’s to :-

being a scrappy hot-head
Aggression and an abrasive tone

With no recognition of the truly great captains they were is downright pathetic and very Player FC.

I think it was pretty clear that the poster you're replying to wasn't intending to diminish the impact of our previous legendary captains, but since we're on the topic, was any of your below post not wumming?

He’s awesome man. Talk of Cantona but he’s levels above. I think he’s in his peak now and for me he’s better than his compatriot Ronaldo was in 2008.
I’m not old enough to have seen George Best, so I’ll give the fact he stopped playing at 25 the benefit of the doubt.
My all time top five roster would be @

Best
Bruno
Charlton
Ronaldo
Rooney

Maybe if we win the league or CL he’ll go above Best, he’s unlucky to have not had good players to play with but jeez what a player.

That's not the main issue, there is at times Bruno can be attempting a hero pass or feck up a 3 yard pass, and then would be blaming the receiver and god forbid if a pass is misplaced to him later on.

Look the team benefits from his creativity, but some days it isn't working, but to watch you give out and whinge at another player for a poor pass is infuriating and it looks bad.

Worrying he's only got 1+1 left on his contract. I'd be offering him a job for life!
He’ll be nearly 34 by the time that expires, so I think it’s fine to wait until next summer to see where we are performance wise. He’s a high earner and nothing lasts forever. Kind of player that can play at a high level to his mid 30s I’d think but I don’t see there being a rush to do it. Next summer we could look to give him a one year extension maybe, but these are the years when things change for players. Right now the focus is on the season ahead, and rightly so. Hoping he has another great season.

was any of your below post not wumming?…Yes Bruno is a fabulous footballer. Miles better than he is a captain. That’s fine because he’s the assist master. He’s given the club his best years where Eric had four years and retired young. As did Bestie. Ronnie also shone brightly for three years and what a three years but then left. Bruno has put up with us being 15th to boot due to poor management and senior management. Committed his best years and been sensational at times. But the discussion is around what makes a great captain.

That doesn’t mean I’m player FC. It doesn’t mean I have him topping every poll or fit every agenda to him. His strengths are a joy to behold. He also has areas where he isn’t so strong. So does everyone.

I’d like to post more in this thread but it’s futile. Any suggestion Bruno might not top a poll and this little group of fans come out in force and then it’s days of snide comments and stat man Daves.

Why can’t you guys let people have opinions?

Do I think he’s the only good player we have? Not a chance. We have other wonderful players too.

As for the post I’m discussing…How is it pretty clear that they’re not diminishing the impact ? They had the chance to respond themselves around whether they saw the importance of Robbo, Keane and Cantona ON THE PITCH and chose to respond with..being a scrappy hot-head. Aggression and an abrasive tone. As the only recognition of what they gave the shirt. Whilst obviously creating a separate narrative to fit good captaincy around Bruno and away from on field importance.

Robson, Cantona and Keane, how they led on the pitch…Isn’t nearly as important as what happens between games…That’s a difficult take for any United fan wouldn’t you say? Or does this not fit your narrative?

Fair enough if you stand by your (apparently genuine) claim that Bruno has been a better player for United than Bobby Charlton, Rooney and Ronaldo. For me, even as someone who loves Bruno and has often defended him to the hill, that is a mad stance to take. A stance that I assume most (if not all) of the so-called "little group of fans that come out in force" wouldn't go so far as to concur. For you to hold his footballing ability in such high esteem, whilst simultaneously going on a tirade about how inferior of a captain he is compared to our other legendary captains, just seems a bit out-of-the-blue when the poster you were replying to was simply stating how Bruno's captaincy style is better suited to this current generation of footballers.

Also, just as an amusing side-note, I know very little about this Statman Dave character that you've namedropped, other than seeing him tweet a few Opta stats that paint Bruno in a positive light, but if he ever tweeted that Bruno was a better player for United than Charlton then I would start to question his faculties.

It’s fine to have a different opinion. Where would you have Bruno in say a top 20 players or 30?

Tirade? There’s no tirade dude. Also it’s not about Bruno. It’s about someone shifting goal posts to diminish what others did, to attempt to elevate Bruno as a captain because he has to top every poll. It happens a lot in this thread. It saddens me. Two things can be true.

Bruno can be a great player and so can others.
Bruno can be better than others without them being utter dross
Bruno can be a great player without being a ‘legendary captain’.
Steve Bruce can be a better captain than Ryan Giggs.
Ryan Giggs can be a world class legend.
Steve Bruce can be merely a very good CB and nowhere near world class.

Look again at this thread. I came in to state that it should be a difficult take for our fanbase because as a club we have had an unusual amount of the greatest captain’s ‘on the pitch’ to ever play the sport. Now I’m having to defend that stance? Not the dude who assigned scrappy hot-head, aggression abrasive tone as the only noteworthy and remarkable traits when describing the captaincy of Robson, Cantona, Keane.

You’ve stated ‘the poster you were replying to was simply stating how Bruno's captaincy style is better suited to this current generation of footballers.’ But why are you claiming this? They never have? Not when I made the point about the previous captains we’ve had and what they did on the pitch and not when deciding to name what they see as the attributes of those I mentioned.

If specific to ‘the current generation’ were true then when faced with my initial question the logical response would be along the lines of -

‘I mean in the current generation’ or ‘Those players were some of the greatest captains ever but I feel the needs have changed in the modern game’.

But they didn’t make that distinction, in response to me ‘name dropping’ Robson, Cantona, Keane, THEY kept the former with the latter -

A captain spends roughly 90 minutes per week on the pitch on average over the course of a full year. And they are mainly busy playing football during those 90 minutes. (Diminishing the importance of what others did on the pitch, there’s no mention of ‘these days’ or framing to that effect)

The amount of captain-specific actions you are able to do on the pitch pale in comparison to all the hours on the training ground etc.(Elevating Bruno’s captaincy with no framing towards ‘unlike in the past’)

That is why I think what you do off the pitch matters more. Especially these days…‘Especially’ is important here because it makes the distinction between an argument that is inclusive of the past and one that is exclusive. The poster is talking about what has always made a great captain - THEN further elevating the importance in the modern game. At no point have they isolated the discussion or reframed from my response.

Only you have done this.

The response THEY chose when framing Robson, Cantona and Keane as captains simply was -

being a scrappy hot-head, aggression abrasive tone won't do you any favors with the referee. I also think players are more professional these days, which reduces the need for constant, loud corrections.

Just as an amusing side-note, I know very little about this Scandi Red character that you've defended, other than seeing him post a few Opta stats that paint Bruno in a positive light, but if he ever posted that Bruno was a better captain for United than Robson then I would start to question his faculties.

@michelleOntaRio-Rio you're either purposely misunderstanding me or you lack the ability to understand any form of text that isn't a million lines long with every minor opinion explained in excruciating detail.

I'm not diminishing our previously great captains in an attempt to elevate Bruno. All of the mentioned must have been good captains both on and off the pitch.

All I'm saying is this (opinions, by the way):

1. Being a good captain off the pitch us more important than being a good captain on the pitch.
2. I think people overestimate the importance of on-pitch captaincy (this is closely connected to the point above).
3. Football and player culture has changed, and so has the role of the captain. And I think some of these changes further strengthen the two points above.

Notice that none of these opinions diminish our previously great captains. That is unless you believe that they were useless off the pitch, which I really hope you don't!

As for the part about being scrappy: that was an asset in the 90's! But in 2026? Not so much. Again: this doesn't diminish Keane (for instance). His scrappy nature is only one out of many assets/skills he had as a captain.

Just as an amusing side-note, I know very little about this Scandi Red character

Due to the massive open space behind the goals it looked like a glitch in the matrix

Rumors of Juve and AC sniffing around and while it doesn’t surprise me they have no chance. Our Bruno is way beyond those clubs. He’s at United he ain’t taking a huge step down, so unless PSG, Real, Barca or Bayern come in we can rest easy. If they were going to it would probably have been before now anyway.

Looking forward to another season of beautiful assists.

Hilarious penalty miss just because it was so casual.

He wouldn't have missed if it was a proper shootout I don't think.

Looked all over the place in pre season. Hopefully gets his shit together soon we will need it

Sometimes I wish he played with the intention to keep us ticking more. He's our best player so the chances to create or score will always come, he doesn't need to get involved in everything all the time.

This is something Rooney was excellent at. He knew how good he was and could take over at any moment but often gave the ball to Nani and Valencia to create and stayed out of the way, or would have moves where he would link and ensure touches go around the team. It meant he was never always the centre point for creativity.

Bruno will give up the ball but will want it back to be the one to create the chance. I think it's a large part of why we were crap today. He's obviously not fully up to match speed but has everything going through him.

It still remains to be seen if we can ever have a winning team without him being so dominant. In recent years, he's improved on some of his earlier flaws but can he keep the same level of performance with having less involvement in all of our attacks. He thrives when he has to shoulder the responsibility of the team but teams are stronger when it's a core group of players responsible.

We know Bruno, when he's off it he's really off it. Unfortunately had one of those games against Milan.

Awful. Tielemans and Santos having the joint worst cameos ever may have spared his blushes ever so slightly
