Bruno Guimaraes | Ornstein: Arsenal nearing total agreement over deal

Arsenal have plenty of history and we’ve won a fair few trophies.

As for money, you’re implying that Arsenal’s 2026 revenue only exceeded United’s because United had a down year. Arsenal’s revenue exceeded all English clubs. In history.
I am not saying that you're spurs, just that you're smaller then us in terms of fanbase, trophies and usually revenue. Actually I applaud how well run you are and how poorly run we are

Outside the UK, united are huge, second to only to Real Madrid and at par with Barca and Liverpool. I fully respect what arsenal did but there's no comparison
Kids nowadays are more into players than clubs. My nephews want Mbappe, Yamal and most of all Haaland shirts. Their respective clubs are the most popular clubs for kids and those are the most shirts I see out and about other than the usual Messi and Ronaldo ones.

Ok I bite. Lets start from what I believe to be the answer of everything ie Arsenal are a smaller club then us. They lack our history, our trophies and in 2026 (which was United's annus horribilis) it was the first year they had beaten us in revenue. What Arsenal did was to invest hugely on their stadium. Meanwhile we were busy paying the Glazer's debt, its interests and the dividends. Then they hired an ex player as manager (which is controversial) and they properly supported him. Arteta had spent 934m in signings. They also added an experienced DOF in Andrea Berta not the CEO's mate with 12 months experience in the job at Southampton.

Now can you please explain to me how we're too negative towards the Glazers?

934 million spent. You realise how much we’ve spent in that period too? Just as ambitious, just got quite a few of the signings wrong. They hired an ex manager? He would likely have been sacked at any other club considering his first few seasons. We appointed multiple managers during that time, a few we actually believed could work, no? All of them failed. Still tried to be ambitious and get the right manager in though, easy to say different once it’s failed.

So again, how are Arsenal this hugely ambitious club? Sign who they want? Yes, mostly players without a great deal of competition that aren’t actually rated as top players. It’s not a knock on Arsenal, a club currently doing very well but let’s not use everything as a stick to beat our club with.

Of course you’re right about it the Glazers. That doesn’t make you right in saying Arsenal are a big ambitious club and that we are a laughing stock or defending how Arsenal have been ridiculed for 20 plus years ffs.

Answer this, if we had signed most of the players Arsenal have what would your response have been? Are they all world beaters while everybody we’ve signed are shit?

Also, aren’t we currently in the process of readying a new stadium? Oh yes, yes we are. Not ambitious though?

There's no doubt that we are in decline but we are still way bigger than arsenal in terms of fanbase

£75m is a decent price given Newcastle shouldn't NEED to sell from a financial perspective and he's their captain. If he were 25 like Tonali he'd be a £115m player in this market for sure given his quality.
I think that is correct. 75 mil for a 29 year old seems like a lot because he will have very little resale value, so he is basically costing us 20 mil a season. Still, if we were to get this position player, I think he was the best one on the market and we should get some good years out of him. I will see how he fits in. Again, as I see it, we had other priorities. But, Bruno G is quality, and it's hard to be against the club getting more of that.

Hopefully, we can stop talking about getting more 6s and 8s for our team now....I feel like this is additional trauma of my kids blurting about that 6 7 thing..

Left sided attacker/ forward needed!

Think that trio might get an extended rest and won't play till late September. All looked pretty fecked at the WC.

Isn't the expectation that Rodri will be a Madrid player before the window shuts?
Won’t Saliba be out for longer? I thought he fecked up his back.

Not sure on Rodri. There’s been a lot of will-he, won’t-he, no?

we bought the wrong players with Joel playing football manager and a banker being at the top of the football pyramid. It's certainly not on Carrick whom, till the time of writing, is facing a very underwhelming transfer window. Regarding the stadium, first of all we shouldn't even have needed it. We need it now because our owners had left OT to rot. Secondly even the staunchest INEOS sympathizers are struggling to understand how on earth we're going to pay for it. You might not notice but this club hasn't been profitable for years, its 1.3b in debt, it had paid over 800m in debt interest and had paid almost 200m in dividends. The coffers are empty, the era of cheap debt is gone, INEOS are 18b in debt and our owners do not look the kind who like to put their hands in their pockets. Arsenal are a smaller club then us but financial wise and in terms of how they are being managed they are on a different planet

They can be as big as they want - facts remain, we are the biggest club in England like Real Madrid and Juventus are the biggest clubs in their countries regardless of how big the other clubs are.
Liverpool are on par with us now. I would say Milan are bigger than Juve as well

This is a great move for them. Exactly the definition of signing from a position of strength.

I get that and I don’t feel at all insulted. But 2026 will likely see Arsenal not just have higher overall revenue than United, but also equal or higher revenue in the three main income sources (Match Day / Broadcast / Commercial).

This isn’t a flash in the pan like when Chelsea won the inaugural CWC and sold themselves their own hotel and women’s team. And the income isn’t questionable like City’s. It’s indicative of being in contention for the biggest trophies for the last half a decade.

A teenager getting into football growing up in New York or Shanghai has never seen United in a title race. At some point that starts to matter. I’m not saying Arsenal are a big club because they’ve just earned record revenues. I’m saying that the money is a result of success on and off the pitch that has been built over time, just as United’s financial advantage has been eroded over time.

Saying that United “dwarf” Arsenal in such areas is pretty difficult to square with reality.

Mate you are way better run them we are and quite frankly I am jealous of you on that regard. Your future is rosy while ours is on the way down unless we find competent owners who have the ambition and the money to invest

The odd trophy doesnt really change the grandeur of the name. Pool and ManU carry a bigger name, that much is clear. But names can fade over time while others rise. Man City have shown that. Most people outside of England 30 years ago, would have struggled to think of a second Manchester club.

In terms of earnings, it is pretty close from 2nd to 8th. We are only talking about 25% or so within that range.

I heard 3 to 4 months, but with recurring back injuries, I think he needs to be managed more this season, and those ahead.

There's plenty of doubt about us being in decline. We're currently on an steady upward trajectory both on and off the pitch - wage bill reduced, back in the CL, far better league finish, some troublesome players like Garnacho and Sancho no longer at the club. What you have said is just your opinion and which is not supported by reality at all. I bet you just think we should be buying Vini Jnr and Anderson and paying whatever it takes while also hoovering up every top young player on the planet.

Tielemans is better than Zubimendi, Merino and MLS so he definitely would improve their squad. Bruno is the slightly better player and a better fit however.

Not sure he is necessarily that much of an improvement on Zubimendi or MLS personally. Merino is a different type of tool in their arsenal (pun fully intended) given his ability to cover CF and score important goals.

Very good player Tielemans (and I think a brilliant signing for United) and agreed he'd improve the squad, but doesn't move the needle for them with where they are competing for the major trophies.

Bruno G is I legitimately world class and the type of signing that can help them get over the line in defending the title or winning the CL.

I think you guys are on the up. Still feel you need a more distinct brand of football...the other three, Pool, City and us have a more set way of dictating a game, but then again I was not sure of ours last season.

Because we've signed Bruno and Vini in the same summer? Absolutely
will it be hard for the fanbase to admit that martinelli is actually shit when vini jr arrives?

That’s a bit of an insane take putting MLS there. MLS has played a handful of games as a midfielder in his career, a few good showings at most. He shouldn’t even be in a conversation with a guy like Tielemens.

Most of us have been disappointed in his development for years. He runs with his head down far too much and is probably more suited to CF. He also only scored 1 PL goal last season (albeit a crucial one against City).

So no, not really.

i heard that’s just because the dodgy newcastle owners were winding the clock back on his mileage.

Insane amount of minutes for Tielemans really

will it be hard for the fanbase to admit that martinelli is actually shit when vini jr arrives?
It depends where you look but a decent part of the fan base doesn't rate Martinelli at all anymore

Insane amount of minutes for Tielemans really
Well he was already considered one of the best young talents in the world at 16. I don't buy into this idea of more mins at a young age automatically equaling earlier retirement/drop in ability though. The correlation tends to be more linked to these players generally not looking after themselves very well imo. How many mins do Ronaldo and especially Messi have now? As long as Tielemans has the right diet and doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs, etc, there's no reason he can't play at a high level for a few years yet, especially given he's always been very technical. He definitely improved the physical side of his game over time (he used to be tiny when he was really young) and is now quite strong, but getting slower over time wouldn't impact him as much as someone who generally relied on their physical assets much more.

It's also why Arsenal are looking at the bigger picture with Vini Jr. There's no doubt Man Utd & Liverpool are bigger clubs. History, trophies, fan base etc. But i think we see a good opportunity here.

Last time we won the league was the Invincibles, but we had committed to the new stadium, so couldn't build on that period of success. In fact, what followed was a period of austerity. Abramovich & the Sheikh's came in & changed the game, meaning any advantage we thought we were going to get with increased stadium revenue was cancelled out & then some. Plus we had tied ourselves down to longer Commercial deals which over time had less & less value in comparison to our peers.

Add to that our own ownership issues and some bad on & off the pitch choices and we found ourselves lagging well behind and out the Champions League places for a a few years.

Now, after some proper investment and good decisions, we find ourselves back competing at the top. Our commercial revenue is the fastest growing in the country, we've just won the league and made a Champions League final, but we were all wondering to see how the ownership would react. Were they happy with what they had, or do they really want to try & kick on, & take advantage of a Post World Cup summer that always results in growing interest in the game globally?

I think that's where Vini Jr comes in. He's being seen as what we need on the park to elevate the team, but to also elevate the stature of the club, & increse the brand & therefore the revenue & ultimately the value of the club.

I do agree that ManUtd is the biggest.
But generally ManUtd, Liverpool and Arsenal its in that order and not much between these three.
If we had as much success as Pep brought City there would have been nothing in between.
Currently we lack behind United/Liverpool in trophies but basic things are culture/history is there.

But yes at present its ManUtd / Liverpool / Arsenal. Although not sure how much that matters in todays age. Its good for fans to boost but players care very little about this. We have been humbled by Chelsea and ManUtd with ManCity. In this age money talks.

It really doesn't mean as much as it used to. Money followed by success buys you more fans or audience effectively too. City, and even Chelsea have shown that. There are more new City fans than new Pool, Utd or Arsenal fans.

Not sure how loyal these fans are, but that's another issue.

Yesterday while passing through a day care for toddlers, i heard the Haaland song and the kids were enjoying and dancing along. United are losing touch in this social media heavy climate.
Without any silverware or any world class players in the same standard of Messi/Ronaldo/Mbappe or Haaland, United will be down the pecking order in terms of relevance.
We unfortunately have been a meme club for a while now. Going to take some winning to undo that tag and bring in new, young fans who will buy United merchandise and make Glazers more rich!
