I don't know with him....

Can't beat a man and really he doesn't even try to.

Doesn't possess any kind of ability to play incisive passes inside, other than the usual square ball.

He's good when he's in the box, but his general play in the final third is not very strong.

His position is there for the taking if Amad wants it.

Yes, I get the impression of that too. Every time he lost the ball today, he didn’t make any effort to chase for the loose ball and gave up completely

Yep. I mean it was a pre season friendly and all that but he looked absolutely uninterested out there today. In addition to not being able to get past a man or pass the ball to a teammate.
 
I think this is a big season for him personally.

Him and Amad.

If they don't look the part, we'll need a right sided attacker brought in next summer.
 
He described his own performances last season in an interview as average last year saying he knows he can play a lot better than he showed , hopefully he can do that this season.

Started off very strong last season but faded as the season went on , need more consistency from him this season.
 
He and cunha had inverse seasons last year, cunha was bobbins pre January and Brian was firing then they swapped.
 
He never left Africa after AFCON, some doppelganger imposter killed him and took his place. Seriously though it's weird how his form nosedived around that time and hasn't really recovered since.

He scored in 3 out the first 4 games after he returned from AFCON. City, Arsenal, Spurs.
 
Can be very clinical and despite not being the fastest, his pace is key to how we play. I thought his chance creation would be better than it is. Lets see how he gets on this season. Amad really should be pushing more for that position. Its there for the taking.

Yep, in fact his worst period was right before AFCON. Was missing loads of chances, that Bournemouth game in particular was brutal. Second half of the season wasn't great after the initial Carrick surge, but he really had already started struggling before Amorim was sacked.

Only player in our squad that chances seem to consistently fall to like that though, even on his worst days, which is no doubt a good thing.
 
Hopefully he'll stop blazing the ball over the bar this season.

It nosedived before that, after the autumn international break. He was shite during the final month or so of Amorim.
 
I thought he looked slimmer in some of the photos released from training. Did he look it during the game?

He was poor before AFCON, I just think people like to cling to an "easy explanation" but AFCON is not to blame for his poor form.

I do wonder about him long term, he looks like a back up striker rather than a wide player. I don't know many wide players at the top level can get by with such a lack of ability to beat a man, unless we play a Heskey/Weghorst up top and he is constantly just running in behind off that CF.
 
His all round ability and performances just aren’t as good as his end product. He’s just one of those players who if he isn’t scoring looks a bit crap but when he does score it doesn’t matter.

His goal output last season was still pretty good despite him having a very up and down season and that is probably what to expect again.
 
He burned out pretty early on last season, this season with more games will be a slog for him.

Apart from a sprint through the middle which came to nothing, he didn't really do anything of note today.

Improved as the game went on but yes, his touch was horrendously bad for the most part. I'd say it's just preseason but his technique has looked inconsistent since before AFCON.

He's never going to be a winger that takes fullbacks on often, just not his game (although I'd like to see him at least shift onto his right and clip some more crosses in once in a while). But if he's going to merit a place in the team as a final third output specialist, his touch/technique needs to be cleaner.

Yeah he’s got a very low “bottom level”. Good goalscorer though. Hope he rediscovers and maintains his early season form of last year. At least with him and Amad we have two different profiles and good options on that side (hoping Amad can find his scoring touch again - he wasn’t particularly good post afcon either).

You wouldn’t think he was our 2nd highest goal contributor last season iirc.

All our players have their weaknesses, if Mbeumo is used correctly at the right times with a midfield that can find his runs he’ll get even more goals this season.

Off the ball (in an attacking sense) he's our smartest front 3 player so he'll get himself into goalscoring positions.

Carrick will have to find the right times to play Amad and Mbeumo on the right. As you say, very different profiles. Some fullbacks will struggle against one but deal with the other well.

In this context the additions of Santos and Tielemans really excite me - someone like Mbeumo should thrive with such progressive passers behind him, and having more players who can find Mbeumo’s runs will open up space for other players moving off him.

He plummeted to depths people didn’t even think possible with the sacking of Amorim and change of positions and role. Concerns about him are valid and it’s bizarre to act like a whole half season didn’t happen. If he’s that bad again, it’ll be a worry for everyone.

He wasn’t great from a technical perspective but he still put the shift it and got enough goals to give him some credit in the bank.

He was also played out of position for a lot of the second half of the season if I remember correctly. He’s not a centre forward and needs to be used as a wide forward cutting inside.

As usual there is a lot of knee jerk reaction in here which surprises me when we have a lot of other positions that should worry everyone a lot more.

Agreed, he had Bruno last season as the only person who even tried to find his runs. Mbeumo is down the list of concerns I’d have.

Yeah same. He still provides value even when off form (goals, plus his off the ball defensive work and his runs), and I think it's inevitable he'll play himself back into form again. In the meantime we have great competition for places anyway as all of Amad, Dorgu, and Lacey can play that side.
 
He’s currently playing like Rooney was always after getting back from an injury - clumsy, heavy touches galore. Let’s hope Sesko and Amad can keep him out of the team, or hopefully he can improve but it’s worrying how long this slump has been going on.

Exactly, most in form player should play, others fight for a place. Great for the squad.

You think Amad has done any better over the last 12mths?

Surprises me that people prefer him, with his 2 goals all season, over a guaranteed 12-15 goal player.
 
I love this guy, he was quite wasteful last season but gave no shit about it and kept going. He works hard, he's still going to take players on, he's still going to test the keeper. That relentless nature in him will ensure he bags enough goals/assists to tick over nicely.

Not really, no. But I think Amad has a higher ceiling. Ultimately, it’s likely neither will be good enough for us long term.
