Exactly, most in form player should play, others fight for a place. Great for the squad.
Yep. We're finally building some meaningful competition for places again, which is integral for a possible title challenging squad. The other huge benefit of this goes relatively unseen in training - having proper depth and competition on the training ground is far, far better preparation for playing PL opposition week in week out. At times in the past few years we've looked shell shocked by the pace and quality and competitiveness of the opposition, even when playing mid table and relegation fodder teams. And when you think our training would have consisted of our FBs facing Garnacho or Sancho or Antony, or CMs playing against Ugarte or McTominay, no wonder we looked consistently unprepared.
It reminds me of an old quote from Keane I think where had said that training under Fergie's teams was often higher intensity and a higher standard than some of the games we played.
