Bryan Mbeumo | 2026/27 Performances

Which is kind of fine, I think at times we need someone that can play that 2nd striker role

Also his goal was reminiscent of JJ Gabriel's during the week, thought it was interesting he tried the same high looping shot

It wasn’t remotely similar to that

I think it could work, but requires the other side to hold width. Which is why, again, why we need a proper LB.

Now that it's about half a year on -

Do we think that Semenyo or Mbeumo is better irrespective of who fits us better?

Is there single player in the premier league he can get past? You can't be a wide forward/winger and not being able to dribble past your marker at least couple of times per game, even Anthony was trying to get past players.

His good end product in these kind of games hide that we posses absolutely no danger whatsoever from that right hand side. He is so easy to close, just stand off him and that's it, he always goes to pass either to his fullback or back to midfielders when we are slowly building the attack.

My view on Mbeumo is that he's very good at all the aspects of football that people tend to underestimate. His off the ball work is brilliant both in attack and defence, he's constantly threatening the last defender and creates space for Bruno in between the lines. Yes, he can be frustrating because people want him to play like a traditional wide forward going to the by line and beating a man, but that isn't his game. He's most similar to Salah in style, yes he doesn't have the same end product but will always score goals as he gets in great positions over and over again.

The feeling I have about Mbeumo is that he upgraded our attack when we brought him in, and for the first couple of months he was very good.

But ultimately I think he's mediocre. He'll get to a certain level but I don't think he's part of a team challenging for titles which is where we want to be.

I think we should be looking to upgrade on him next year but the way Ineos approach the transfer market, next year's priority will be defence so I think he'll be spared as they seem happy to keep "ok" players for as long as possible rather than open the chequebook!
Why do people keep trotting out nonsense like this about players on this forum.

In 2020 Origi made 28 appearances, are you saying mbeumo isn't as good as him?

City had an unproductive grealish as a mainstay in one of their title winning seasons, are we saying he's not at that level?

Darwen Nunez played 30 games for the last pool side who won the league. Jota went how many games without a goal in that spell?

Mbeumo is plenty good enough for a title winning team, always looks dangerous and is a chance magnet.

Players with an eye for goal are the most premium ones in football for a reason. You can play all great football but if your players fluff the lines when trying to score, its all for a naught. I would be fine if Mbeumo is great goalscorer and doesn't hinder our general game play.

As has been mentioned by others, to me it appears that Mbeumo has fitness issues. He seems to be running in treacle when moving away from defenders, which when he came to Utd was never an issue. Not sure if that is also causing technical issues because we marvelled at his control from goal kicks last season but now the balls just bounce away from him.

Hopefully a long run in the team will aid the fitness issues but it would be telling when Amad returns and Sesko is restored as striker, whether he continues to get a run in the team.

Mothrfecker scores goals.

Do we care how he scores them? No we don't.

Can't beat a man? He doesn't have to - what he does, and does really good, is get into space.
Also, with all that ass, he's basically a fecking ox, you can't outmuscle the man.

And one of the most important skills he has - he rarely gets injured. That alone makes him a great asset.

I'll bet any of you he gets over 20 goals this season.

Yup, this 100%.

I don't care about him beating his man if he can make runs like he did for his goal. His movement is very good in and around the box, has been fluffing his shots (even last season) but that will come. He was deadly at Brentford and during that purple patch with us.

More than fitness issues, he looks like a player struggling with confidence at the moment.

Attackers really run on confidence. Tiredness from AFCON, then WC, makes you miss easy things and the you start losing confidence and so on.

It’s a very good thing he found the net yesterday, he’ll get back up to fitness and confidence.

Also I don’t know where this 25 goals per season winger exists for less than 200m.
I don’t know if it’s because of video games or the CR7/Messi era but most productive attackers will score anywhere between 15 and 20 games per season. If you want more goals, you need Ballon d’Or level attackers and they don’t come cheap

Yeah, but that Liverpool 2020 team and those City title winning teams were excellent teams, with numerous world class players throughout, that reached and won Champions League finals. They could probably afford to carry a passenger or two.

At the moment, we're not in that position. He could probably be a decent squad option, I just don't think he's top quality.

He needs to start scoring sitters then, a miss against empty net from one meter is really unacceptable at this level
I mean it was a really poor miss but these things happen frequently to even the best strikers in the world. There have been quite a few embarrassing misses from Kane and Lewandowski over the years for example.

You do realize the GK touched it before and changed the trajectory?

A ball traveling at that speed and changing course in the last millisecond is definitely not a definition of a sitter.

He will get lots of goals, he's very professional and works hard.

He has plenty of flaws and ultimately doesn't suit a possession dominant side but considering where the transfer market is now he's a fine signing at what he cost.

What's "lots of goals"? About 12 PL goals a season is what I'd expect.

He's basically always been a 10 to 12 goal forward. The clowns who saw 20 at Brentford and didn't notice the penalties were the only ones getting excited about spending £70m on him.

Very well said. Every title winning team has match winners and a strong and balanced supporting cast. But not every member needs to be an elite world beater.

But that's the thing - we can build an excellent team with Mbeumo playing a significant part. Right now our biggest weakness is CB and FB. Build a top level defence begind our current midfield and attack and we could challenge for a title.

And Mbeumo isn't a passenger - even being out of form he's been contributing with important goals.

I think yesterday he was our worst player technically, he looked the most ensure with his touch, passes, control of all players from our team. He was missing easy chances as well. It was his typical performance that despite being so bad, he still ended up scoring. One thing is for certain, he is not a winger, he does not have the dribbling ability to stretch defenses or take people on. His best attribute is to be on the end of finishing chances, but once Sesko and Amad are fit, does he really start for us?

Which easy chances? The volley which hit the bar from Rashford’s cross was unlucky - the keeper got a touch in Rashford’s cross which changed the flight of the ball. Not much he can do about that.

Agreed, he’s much better making runs off the ball and being on the end of chances than being on the ball needing to make things happen.

I dont disagree that he was awful yesterday, but he seemed to operate just fine as a winger for a number of years in this league for Brentford so what's different now?

which is why i dont get carrick putting cunha at the 9 instead of him. Think mbuemo would at least get us more a focal point while we await sesko getting his fitness back

I’d sell him before the window closes. I don’t see what he offers. A winger who can’t beat his man, create chances, or consistently make things happen.
And replace him with who with two days left in the window?

What possible benefit would we get out of selling a player who gets us double figures in league goals? How is losing maybe our biggest goal threat and having one less attacker in the squad going make us finish higher in the table?

I read some very odd things on here.

Yeah same. And Cunha can actually drive with the ball from deeper.

Unfortunately, looks like Mbuemo is always going to attract criticisms. He isn't the most refined or aesthetically pleasing footballer, but he seeks out chances throughout the entire match and he is always productive. Him rotating with Amad gives us very different and useful options.

For Hull - I imagine the plan for the game would have been Cunha left, Mbeumo 9, and Amad right - he liked that front 3 a lot last season. But Amad got injured so it resulted in moving Mbeumo back out to the right. I would argue it made more sense to just put Dorgu on the right as that's probably his best position as almost all wingers are better inverted. Dorgu's never played on the right under Carrick as he's basically 3rd choice on that side behind Mbeumo/Amad, but I'm not sure why he was so reluctant to try it.

After Dorgu's shocker vs Hull there was no way he could start the next game, so by default the front 3 for Ipswich had to be Rashford/Cunha/Mbeumo as Amad was still injured and Sesko is still only just back from injury. I think it would be a bad idea to play Rashford or Cunha on the right as they're just not comfortable there, if they're playing wide they need to play inverted on the left if they're going to be effective. So I think that front 3 selection was logically correct, and given we scored 5 I think it was vindicated.

The thing with Mbuemo and Amad, is that both are not really first choice material for the aspirations of this club. The former’s general play is bang average but he has a knack of being a goal threat. Amad is (usually) great on and off the ball but has a knack of being poor in the final third.

Ideally we’d have a better RW and one of them would be second choice. Or Amad transforms his productivity completely which is hard to see happening at this stage. I don’t mind either as an option but then I remember that we spent 70m pounds on Mbeumo. For that fee you want more quality imo.

Why is that hard to see happening? Last season was a mix of some bad luck, some poor form, and some inconsistent finishing. But the season before he got 21 G/A and he’s consistently productive for the Ivory Coast. Lots of attacking players don’t find that composure and consistency in the box till their mid twenties and onwards. I find it pretty easy to imagine that part of his game coming together.

One thing I am disappointed by with him is the framing those advocating for his signing gave in his transfer thread of a very neat and tidy player with rock solid, dependable fundamentals and certain technique. I didn't watch him much at Brentford so relied on others to give accurate assessments.

Unless those aspects have plummeted here, it is a massive miss-sell and his technical ability is one of the major reasons why he struggles.

I think he's a proper 50:50 player at the moment who basically has this season to establish himself or either be demoted or sold. In better squads, he doesn't start or get so much time to find form. I figure his best hope is to just be efficient and dependable with taking his chances - productivity is always a lifeline and if he is showing his average state here, he really needs to use productivity as his crutch.

Fair enough but some players just don't look at ease in the final third and that's Amad so far for me.

Don't understand what happened to him. Initially he had some unbelievable first touches and looked in control of the ball, then out of nowhere he began having shit touches looking like he had no control whatsoever and it looks like it carried on this season so far. Maybe the pressure has got to him and the standards here and fans' expectations are much different than Brentford.

I don’t have too many concerns with him, the sitter he missed happens to the best of players. He puts a shift in and is always fit, I think its just a dip in form after AFCON and a slow start to the season

I'd guess he reads this forum and the over the top harsh takes and criticism affects his confidence. Since his arrival he's been one of Utd's most impactful players, especially in regards to goal scoring.

People need to get off his back, he's no Salah or Olise but SAF won league titles with players who weren't necessarily world-class and so did Arteta last season.

He had excellent pre-season, and if he's serious about being considered solid player, he'll take some criticism, and turn into results... and Carrick badly needs results as means of survival.
