Some are still living in the 1990s with their prices. As I've said before, we're in an era that backup full-backs can go for £30million.
The ironic thing is that it’s the English teams keeping their own market inflated. They aren’t selling these players abroad for that kind of moneys. But, until they work out how to stop the circle, then 60m sounds about right for a player like Mbeumo in this market

Who has signed backup fullbacks for £30 million?

They are signed as starters, they just dont perform. Its like saying we sign attacking players we don't want for £70 million becuase we have Sancho. We didnt sign him to not want him, we signed him to be a star player and things have just turned out poorly.

£55-65m is good value for a PL proven forward that ticks basically every box that we desperately need. And we are fecking desperate.

Are we waiting until after 1st July to announce this signing, seems to have dragged on a bit.Is that the start of the financial new year,

The funny thing is that clubs would rather pay 60m with more comfortable installments then 55,m

The present value of 50m paid as an annuity over 5 years at an interest rate of 4% (circa current US treasury rates) is about £53.5m. So you'd be better off by £1.5m by paying £60m over 5 years, than paying £55m upfront.

This raises another point, that if you're a rich club like Man City and Chelsea, cashflows don't matter to you - you just need PSR room.

Cash rich clubs can offer favourable payments both when buying and selling players. When buying - just pay it up front and reduce the fee on the basis of that.

And when selling offer ridiculously good payment terms - even up to 10 years, to get as much income as you can get for PSR. Maybe even after 5 years.

If you're selling a player for £30m, rather than taking that money up front - offer them payment terms over 10 years and that would be £35m at an interest rate of 3% (1% below the current treasury rate so the buying side is getting an actual discount).

Now for PSR your book shows you are +35m for current year rather than +30m, and the buyer in real terms has only paid the equivalent of circa £28.75m.

City have been making depth signings for similar amounts for years now.

Just a reminder that PSR is currently slated to end after the 2025-26 season, so its only really a consideration for this summer. Though its not 100% at the moment and we don't know what the transition to SCR will look like yet.

They havent signed any fullbacks for £30 million

They've just signed a fullback for £31.45 million who will start though

They also signed Danilo for £24.5 million all the way back in 2017 and he played 23 games while Walker played 32. I guess that 1 time is the closest to your argument. Again it was 1 time almost a decade ago and it was at least £5 million short.

So how much is their players wage bill and how much is ours? Can't be bothered to read through all of it right now.
 I've got you 90% to the point there with the page numbers. You can do the 10%. It will be good practice for you look into good sources going forward.

Arsenal have also signed a bunch of players for £30m+ that we play at full back (Zinchenko / White / Califiori / Timber). It's not that outlandish.

Well explain further what approximations are because that is what I meant when I said "near". You getting emotional will not change my position. I will explain once more for your mind to grasp the concept of approximations. If you saved £120 million plus in your bank account. And your target was £200million, are you closer to this objective than if you had 80million? It is an approximation, not exact. 50 quid would indeed be an absurd statement because it is nowhere near 200millon. At least compared to £120million plus.

All semantics in the end. However I understand the strategy on this forum. Some people simply struggle with different opinions and get emotional. I am not actually against Mbuemo or Cunha. Good players. I questioned why not spend at least some of that on central midfielders.
Suppose we could spend the missing £80m from your approximations on central midfield and then it's almost like we got them for free!.. I think

Agree conceptually with the analysis, but the benchmark should be each club's cost of capital, not US Treasury rates. So you'd be discounting future cash flows even more.

Jesus Christ, all the dragging on comments.

The guy is on holiday and preseason doesn’t start for another couple of weeks. Chill your jets.

I am actually on vacation and my wife is threatening to divorce me if I continue to spend as much time on the phone as I have this past week.

Will check on it from Monday, and reply the numbers. Tried to have a glance but couldn’t find it as fast as I imagined.

Page 200 - Thread stats and stuff
Well, as is custom at the 200 page mark, we have the muppet scoreboard:

This thread now sits upper-middle of page 2 on the all time board (since the migration) - there are only 27 player threads ahead of it.

It's funny cause there's loads of activity but it doesn't feel as rabid or full of excitement as past transfer threads.

I think a lot of us just basically assume this will get done before long.

Making the Glazers seem somewhat competent. First time without European football and operating at glacial speed in the transfer market (even by our standards) all within the first 12 months. Impressive.
What an awful take. Glazers are literally the reason why are we at this point. Need to sell to buy players because of them and we can't sell players mainly because of the ridiculous wages they sanctioned. Rashford and Sancho are almost impossible to sell them because of the wages they were given by the Glazers they aren't going to take a paycut to leave. Sancho we could have likely sold by now but nope because he's gone on loan the last 2 years while not seeing his wage lowered has been great for him so why would he agree to a wage reduction to go somewhere else when he'll just get another loan and keep his wages and it seems like Rashford has taken his mate Sancho's approach. Only chance he'd reduce his wages for a move is if it's Barcelona. Maybe the blood sucking Glazers should break open to their piggy bank they stuffed from doing nothing but taking money form us and payoff Sancho and Rashford to go.

It’s pretty odd for a holiday to be delaying a huge money move. I know most people would rather the transfer be confirmed before jetting off somewhere exotic

I don't think the holiday is delaying anything - personal terms were already agreed before the clubs started negotiating a fee

This is like when the Tories screw the economy and people blame Labour for not being able to spend

It's not even July yet. Calm down. Having a new signing ready to go on day 1 of pre-season is a novelty. Having 2 is unheard of.

Brexit means Brexit.

It would be nice to ´Class of 92´ our way out of this slump, but it is not going to happen. The kids are good, but they are nowhere near good enough for EPL football. We saw that with Amass this year, he was out of his depth even though he´s been touted by some.

Spending big is risky but there´s no other option if we want to improve our fortunes and not be in relegation scraps. At least in Cunha and Mbeumo we potentially have two players who have proven track records in this league and it certainly inspires more confidence.

Anybody else getting a sense of forboding about the length of time this is all taking ?? I can see us being left with Cunha and a Fellainiesque last day over paid panic buy the way we’re yet again performing commercially.

Meanwhile Liverpool are boxing the arse of us business wise………again

Liverpool have a lot more money to spend than we do. Pointless to compare really.

The class of 92 came into a team with schmeichel, bruce, cantona, Irwin, mcclaire, pal lister, Keane and Andy cole, not to mention Giggs was very established by then. All great players. We'd also just come second.

Garnacho, hojlund and mainoo have proved to varying degrees that this is not a very healthy squad to bring young players into.

It's not like Hoilund would be a great player if you put him in a better team. Can't keep blaming the club and everyone else for a player not being good enough, because sometimes it's as simple as that; they just aren't good enough

Well yeah I don't disagree, but I would suggest he wasn't helped.

Garnacho has a lot of potential and mainoo maybe even more so but rather than coming into stable teams they (especially garnacho) were starters every week with loads of pressure on them. Totally different environment to the class of 92.

Agreed

And even more importantly - our opponents at the time weren't among the best in the world. In fact, I would say most of our opponents were quite mediocre in the mid 90's. Villa who ended 4th had players like Tommie Johnson, Mark Draper, Alan Wright, Savo Milosovic, Gary Charles, Iain Taylor, Gareth Southgate and Andy Townsend playing regularly. Good, solid players - but they were miles behind Giggs, Beckham, Scholes and Butt in terms of pure skills with the ball

Thomas Frank did that post season interview before departing Brentford and announced that they'd be looking to get rid of Mbuemo, but that he would only leave if they got A LOT of money for him. They set their stall out early and due to his contract length aren't forced to sell. People thinking we were ever going to get him on the cheap are simply living in cloud cuckoo land.

This is not even a fun transfer saga. I recall the days of Pogback when we were carefully examining his social media posts to the point we were speculating the colour of his swimming shorts to see if it gave hints on whether he was coming here or going to Madrid. What a time to be alive.

Perhaps it isn't fun because it's been very obvious all along that we are going to sign him.
