Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, details of which leaked online last week. As expected, it's a reboot of Infinity Ward's genre-defining subseries with a modern twist.

What wasn't expected, however, was Activision updating some of its traditional thinking behind Call of Duty as well. Modern Warfare will be the first in the franchise to support cross-play for PC and consoles. The series' now-outdated season pass model has been eliminated, meanwhile, to ensure additional maps and other bits of post-launch content don't fragment the game's playerbase.

And there's an impressive new engine, too, which you can read about in detail from Digital Foundry's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare hands-on analysis.

Modern Warfare's new campaign will see familiar faces - yes, including Captain Price - rebooted into modern day situations. Today's reveal trailer shows glimpses of several levels - one set in central London in the aftermath of a terrorist attack, another which shows a child soldier.

We are creating an emotionally charged experience that's inspired by the headlines in the world today, where the rules are grey and battle lines are blurred," Infinity Ward co-studio head Dave Stohl said.

"Players will join a varied cast of international special forces and freedom fighters in gripping and heart-pounding missions through iconic European cities and volatile expanses of the Middle East. It's intense, it's exciting, and we can't wait for our fans to play this October."

Modern Warfare's "classic multiplayer" experience will be properly unveiled at a later date. There will also be an "all-new cooperative play mode, featuring a collection of strategic co-op missions accessible to all skill levels".

Not a big fan of COD over the last few years. But huge changes here with the new engine and no season pass. I doubt they binned the loot boxes though.

The other big news is cross play between PC, Xbox and PS. Hope that’s a standard from now on for multiplayer games.

You’d imagine the accuracy of mouse & keyboard will make console vs pc online quite one sided...

They’ve said PC can only use a controller to match consoles but you’d expect them to still have the advantage

I find it may be difficult to incorporate that. I dunno, with a PC you can just plug anything and everything in and it works.
I always have an xbox control attached to my PC for the odd game I play and in game menus sometimes show the controller buttons rather than mouse keys yet I still use the KB

Be interesting to see a replica of taking down binladen in this.
There used to be a sexy game back during the PS2 days called "America's 10 most wanted." Bin Laden got fecked real good in that game. Great game now thinking back

It's all a cluster feck now anyways. Lots of console users are using keyboard mouse adapters, particularly at higher levels.

Those maps look like more of the same boring crap. I'd love maps like they had in MW2, they were the absolute shit! Highrise, Favela, Terminal, Afghan, Skidrow and more. Absolute classics, I can picture them all in my head straight away.

MW2 had some belting maps, fair play. Rust was another bonkers one.

I do like the look of this new game though.

Rust was insane, not one of my favourites but you've got to appreciate the pure chaos that ensued every game on that map.

I'm not going to knock the new COD yet it could be great but I'm definitely going to have to be cautious for once. I've literally bought all of the last 5 or 6 CODs and barely played any of them. I always just try and delude myself and think finally this time it's going to be great again. A bit like I do with United tbh:lol:

Out of the last few that's been released the only one i've really hated was Infinite Warfare. That was truly awful. I didn't mind WW2. It wasn't great, but i had a decent time with it. And I've played Black Ops 4 for quite a bit. Some of the bullshit in it really pisses me off though. I really dislike the specialists. I hope they move away from those.

Also, i'm with you regarding United. Next season is ours though...

Night mode looks annoying as feck. Not a fan of maps where it's difficult to see(looking at you cod4 downpour). Using that night vision will be tedious

Might cave and pre-order, but Call of Duty has been largely crap IMO since Black Ops 2.

And Infinity Ward have developed some atrocious CODs lately.

I say this as a once massive COD fan/fanboy too.

This looks easily like the best COD since the Mount Rushmore of COD. (MW, MW2, MW3). Special mentions to Black Ops 1 and 2 and WAW.

I have not been this excited for a COD game in years and I hope it becomes as good as it looks.

The customization on guns looks amazing BUT I can see that as an easy way to get FECKED by micro transactions.

Free DLC probably paves the way for micros. This could be the last pay to play before they adopt a Fortnite/Apex model.

I think some of it looks really good, can't wait.

I enjoyed it tbh. Away for beta but will keep an eye out for videos and reviews to see how it goes. Undecided on pre-ordering but I’m interested more than the last 5 or 6, that’s for sure.

Didn't play it, whats the TTK like? It seemed pretty much 1 shot kill from what I saw.

Myself and @Wedge played good few games of it and found it fun.

I found the maps quiet small, sometimes due to it being alpha we wouldn't be completely loaded in when round started meaning a delay in movement and the other team would rush the map. (Shouldn't be problem in full game)

I like the gun mechanics and movement in thIs call of duty felt a bit more real compared to years gone by.

In two minds about pre-ordering this. The last number of COD games have been very poor but this one does look pretty good from the online videos I’ve seen so far.

I’ve not enjoyed a COD game since MW2. That was fantastic! The COD games since then have been nowhere near as good.

Anyone been playing the beta? Quite enjoy the movement and the shooting. I always think maps make or break cod though, and I'm not sure what I think of the ones in the beta. Lots of camping places

Played a few hours tonight. Really enjoyed it personally. Haven't played enough to have a definitive opinion of the maps yet; although they didn't annoy me, so that's something. I like the fact that it's slowed down a bit form Black Ops 4, though.

Played all the game modes available and really enjoyed the cyber attack one. Basically like Search and Destroy but you can revive your teammates.

Bloody love it. Haven't liked a cod game since black ops 2. Though the ww2 one was fine.

Everyone on Twitter is tweeting about different maps but I can only ever get 2 of them for some reason?

They were good for hectic fighting but you can't beat original MW for maps in my opinion.

Definitely not  Still play the remastered version to this day, best game ever.
I've not got it because I refuse to buy into what COD has become :(
I want the nostalgia but it wouldn't be the same without a load of my mates anyway
