I read this in the guardian. Didn’t he make up loads of other stuff as well? Places he’d worked, athletic endeavours? Seems a bit of a sausage
Yeah seems like a serial liar. How Cambridge elevated him so much is really bad.
he’s been really hard done by. i know him well because we were both voted the best people at doing sex in the world at a prestigious global event. our friendship developed from there and soon we had made many scientific breakthroughs in the world of science together and many people were saying “if we’d have known you were half as smart as you were good at having sex with people then we’d think you were very smart indeed.”

He claimed to have run 600 miles in 6 days - which would have made him one of the foremost long distance runners in the world. He then changed it to 12 days to include rest days.
He raised over £5m. Then clarified he was part of a syndicate. But can’t reveal any names because they all signed NDAs!
Then claimed to be part of a monitoring programme that was 20 years before he was born - but then is was part of an informal monitoring programme.
There’s so much more.

I never get how these people even get that far. Then again, we've exposed things in backgrounds at my place of employment that made us not hire them - when they somehow got federal government clearances (!!). And yes that was before Trump started giving them out like candy.
One of my favorites in the world of academia is probably the one at MIT where the dean of fkin admissions falsified her records and served as their dean for years before they found out. Especially in today's world you have to do less than the bare minimum to not be able to find out about such things.

I think we live in a world where organisations aren’t bothered with checks. References for example are now just a tick box exercise.
In addition, lying, versions of truth and narcissism are so rampant, it’s just normalised by many.
Alternately, there’s always been these types of people who fall though the net.
Even our own newly ousted Chancellor got caught lying on her CV. Turns out there's not really any ceiling to this stuff, you can lie your way into the top jobs in the land if you feel like it.

The lectures got to the stage where people were just openly calling him out as a fraud. He tried to spend an entire afternoon talking about the "wheel of colour" in relation to designing a poster.
Another online lecture he got his wife to do it instead and she just gave the lecture on her law degree which had nothing to do with anything.
They charge like 50k a year to students for this stuff.
The lectures got to the stage where people were just openly calling him out as a fraud. He tried to spend an entire afternoon talking about the "wheel of colour" in relation to designing a poster.

It’s a gold mine for everyone. Should just be treated as the charlatan that he clearly is by everyone. Letters of support from people, when they presumably haven’t looked into his claims don’t help. It doesn’t need to be a left and right.

I haven't plagiarised once in my academic career and I can't even pay people to take me on as a PhD student. 
Quite interested in this story as my dad ended up at Cambridge as a student rather than a professor and came from a different or unusual at the time background when far fewer people went to uni at all.
Arrived in the UK post WW2 under the European Volunteer Workers scheme via Germany, originally from Estonia aged 7 unable to understand English. Passed his 11 plus 4 years later to get into a Grammar school. With having to learn English discovered he had an interest and was somewhat of a natural when it came to languages and ended up at Emmanuel college in Cambridge. Spent most of his working life as technical translator in the textiles field, translating to and from insanely long German compound words. Learned Russian to a very high standard, bits of pieces of French and Spanish as well as his fluency in English and Estonian.
I'm a complete letdown in comparison.
